Yeah I love the creativity too, the diy ones are super cool! The budget systems are my favourite ones to which..... though I might be influenced by the fact I'm a budget audiophile myself.
Great looking systems with such interesting variety and many quality components with several examples of quality gear obtained from the pre-owned marketplace. Many fine lessons to be culled from this display of systems. Thanks Steve!
At the beginning of the video I was thinking my DIY kitchen amp was far too humble to be included... and then there it was. Thrilled to make the cut a second time. 🙏
I think they called it the Schiit Hole at one point. Their first building that wasn't Jason Stoddard's house was a dump, and they needed a little showroom to get past zoning issues, because California sucks. The book Schiit Happened is a pretty good read if you want to learn about how Schiit started.
Loved this Steve, thx. The cinder block speaker stands was reminiscent of the ones I had when I was a student: I blu-tacked my Paradigm 5semk3 to cinder blocks as bases, and that was great. I would suggest to people with budget speakers to weight them down with some heavy weight on top - it makes the speaker and cabinet more rigid and improves the sound (in my experience).
Thanks for this video. I think you should continue to feature the systems that were not in this video in future videos including the vintage systems and others such as low cost systems and medium systems etc.
All these systems are great. The budgets of these are even smaller than mine, and I thought I had a cheap system! My 'hi-fi hack' is the combined triple core stranded & solid power cables attached to my speakers. Great dynamics and tonal range!
Thanks, Steve. Before I started watching your videos, my system was a true "audiopile" (ahem...) but thanks to you (and a few tips from Herb Reichert) it now sounds great, and still well under $1000.
@@ricstars95 Sure. At this point I have an older Onkyo Integra A-8170 (fairly powerful, approx. 175 Watts per channel into 4ohms I believe) driving these somewhat unusual Peavey monitors. The monitors are extremely heavy and have a nice full sound - there's a switch on them for neutral / equalized, and I prefer the neutral. I have the sub wired from the same speaker outputs as the Peaveys to a speaker-level to line-level converter and then to that cheapie sub with RCAs. A bit flaky perhaps, but this wiring scheme is far better sounding than using any other method I've tried with this sub. The rest of my stuff is pretty basic, not much to describe. I use Tidal hi-fi but without MQA since I don't have the hardware for that. I had given the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers a try, but after reading some reviews of other speakers by Herb Reichert, I dared to play solo piano music through them - at piano volume - and their limitations were quickly revealed (distortion, chuffing, resonance). They are good speakers, and you can't hear that nasty stuff playing other music through them, and I still have them around. But, these Peaveys don't give me any trouble. Clear, natural sounding, strong presence. The only thing odd about them is they sound a bit better with thinner gauge speaker wire. I tried some "better" wire, and the lower midrange was too thick for me. Maybe the thin cable is attenuating the signal in just the right way. Anyway, that's basically it. Building the system has been fun and has sounded better and better with each step. I think a better subwoofer might be next. Maybe I'll go over all this in a video at some point.
I love these. The mix and match of old and new equipment to produce quality audio in a specific space is what interest me. Do you play your system LOUD listen on headphones? Or his this a desktop/countertop system? They are all so interesting to think about.
Love this video! I used to own a pair of the Bozak speakers shown in one of the videos. I think subscribers should upload their systems to be shown on the audiophiliac segment.

I have always enjoyed your show and will one day post pictures of my set up, I haven't done so yet because its under construction if you know what I mean. Sadly a lot of setup picture didn't get to make the final cut but it would still be nice if you would give us a link to see them, It would be helpful to someone who want to put a system together or upgrade an existing setup to see what options are available and at what cost.
If there’s ever a sub $500 submission I’ll have to enter. I just started to get into audio and picked up a smsl ad18 dac/amp and Micca rb’42’s. My Sub $250 for daily listening that has been some of the best money I’ve ever spent and I’m very proud of it. My last pair of speakers were Logitech z313’s that I bought back in 2013, they served me well and I really enjoyed them but the second I got my current setup working I was shocked at how much I was missing out.
Michael (around 2 minutes 50 in) could really benefit from some cable management. I know this sounds snobbish and annoying but you could clean that up so much, so easily. A simple cable box from Ikea for something like $10 in black or white (I guess he likes black) would let all those cables including the extension cord and all the wall warts just go inside the box, and that would leave just the bare minimum of cables visible. Strapping the cables to the speaker stands behind the speakers and maybe sheathing them in some white/cream material would make those all but disappear also.
@Stimpy&Ren I suppose it differs on where and why and who, sure. But a cable box to put the snarl into costs nothing and takes no time to dump the excess cable and the extension cord into. Also, some nice cotton weave Techflex braiding for the cables is not expensive either, for this particular room where the floor is cream also, the cables would just disappear against it.
@Stimpy&Ren Yeah, no zip ties for cables. You can buy hook & loop (so Velcro...) in any lengths you want and cut it to length to create cable bundles, if that's necessary. I can't say my cables are all perfect either, but to me it's worth it, the hassles are not really bad enough that it makes it worth living with nasty cable snarls. You can clean things up in half an hour and sure, if you go back over it in a year, that's another half hour but to me, worth it.
Steve, fascinating vid. I'd love for this to become a series. I have a mostly headphone and IEM based system, though I'm looking to put a system together for my Micca RB42s that are currently doing home theater duty. Also what about posting these submissions to your website?
Fun video!! I have an idea for a possible future video---maybe do a 'on the street' video and ask people at random if they have a stereo system and describe it. You might get some comical responses.
I'm new (6 weeks+?) to the Audiophile scene! Back from the Late 70's where Life and family stepped in and distracted me away from Listening. It seems that at my now somewhat advanced age of 70, there's a lot that's changed and that I never did learn in my 40 year hiatus. I've been wonderfully blessed in my late years with a good wife and nice home and with the the Time getting late for me and the availability of a bit of extra money, I'm getting a set of FOCAL Electra 1038 Be''s later on today. I also got my late brother in law's McIntosh stereo system that 'went' to his Grandson who's needs immediate financial help and so we had a Deal: $4,000 for a Mc275, Mc2200 Preamp and a Mc 85 Tuner. That $4K came dear to me even though it was a Steal of a Deal (it seems anyway). I have just gotten a Refurbished Sansui 9090 125 wpm Receiver that I'm sure can drive these new FOCAL's but the Mc stuff is not easy to understand and interconnect. Three McIntosh unites: Mc 275 Mc 85 Receiver Mc 2200 Preamp. My main source of music will be my Sony 51 C/D Player of 25 years ago. I've been on line that gave me a bit of help looking at wiring diagrams and manuals, but things like 'Impute Balance' 22 K Unbalanced and 45 'Balanced' has me scratching my head. I never HAD that Option before. As time goes on (and hopefully me too), I'll learn more about the system but I'd LIKE to see it up and working on my new Speakers and to make sure all is well with the components. My FOCAL's are 8 ohms ea. so then should I hook them up to "8" ohms or the 4 or 12 when I finally feel comfortable with connecting them to my Mc stuff?
Wow lots of really cool set ups. I’m in a dilemma. I have a ton of CDs, vinyl and digital. My wife broke my CD player ( a philips mini home theatre) and now all I have is music stored in iTunes and the others ( cds and vinyl) but nothing good to play them on. Help!!!!
Used paradigm 7SE $90. Re glue the woofer surrounds $10. Chinese Bluetooth amplifier $50. 14 gauge Speaker wire $10. Total $160. Pretty heavy hitting system for that.
Would love to post mine, has a crazy setup mostly for home cinema. But it's also great for music eventhough it's more of an 5.2.2 kind of setup with bass-shakers for the low-end. though it's about 1300-1500$ roughly total. The tonality and clarity when dampened by the way I DIY:d the main speakers and sides makes the hair stand when listening.
I know this might open a whole can of worms you don’t want to deal with. What if folks sent pics of systems, much like they did. But you give the tips on different speakers placements. Enjoy all your info Thanks
Hi there. I've been enjoying some of your videos and I've been wondering lately if you've have any experience with Totem Acoustic speakers. In fact I've not seen much if any Canadian products at all in your videos, at least not that I can recall. How do you feel about Canadian speakers in general?
Sure, I've reviewed Totems over the years, but not lately. One problem, in my current room I cannot place speakers near walls, and Totems sound best that way.
At 7:50, Christopher seems to use a (i?) phone to control the Kindle. Stopped me in my tracks. What the what? I too am just recently running D10/Spark into modded T50 Planars. Nice Chris!
I have an interesting record cleaner that I made if you ever do a show on what we are using to clean our records. I'm the guy with the long tonearms. :)
Gifted iMac feeds a used fireface 400 to gold point passive pre to a used hafler dh-200 to either a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.2s (the only thing here bought new) or a pair of Energy Connoisseur CF-40s (found at the thrift store)
2:00 Can't be under $1000 unless it fell off the back of a truck. 6:00 Have these headphones, and have since new (actually have two), in need of new cords but sound great.
I've just invested for my budget a Fluance RT81 turntable £210 Q Acoustics 3050 floorstanding speakers £320 Yamaha Rs202DBL stereo dab receiver amplifier £170 KabelDirekt speaker cable Sounds fantastic after all the reviews and my requirements I went with these. What's your thoughts everyone
I dig this guys channel so much. I have a question if I get my music from streaming sources what’s the best way to get it to speakers? From a laptop or from a mobile phone via wires or the built into the receiver way. I know streaming music is a less than source but if that’s what I’m working with then how do I avoid losing sound on the way to speakers.
Great review Steve. Hey anyone out there with experience with any of the following for network/streaming: Cambridge Audio CXN V2, Azur 851N? Sony Hap S1, Sony Hap zies? and the OPPO BDP 105? Oppo seems Most versatile of the bunch, but not sure if newer products have it beat. Only thing with Oppo is that it is being sold by private owner, but he says it is in Mint condition. Plus I'll have to pay for shipping, but still for under 1000 it may be a beautiful deal. The other thing I'm concerned about is since Oppo is closed now, how do I get firmware updates? Also, it is I think 1080p for TV, what happens, if anything, if I connect it to a 4K TV? Thanks.
My system is at the 1:45 mark, I currently have the CXN V1, previously had the V2 and the 851N. The 851N was noticeably better, sharper, better imaging, bigger screen, but $1,000+, and it's outdated FW since it's older than the CXN. The CXN V1 and V2 sound identical to me, the only difference is the V2 has Chromecast. The 851N sounds better in every way so if the $1k is okay with you I'd have that one. But the difference to me wasn't that far away to spend an extra $500+. You can get a used CXN V1 for less than $400 if you don't care for Chromecast.
I need to shop where Richie from Brooklyn shops, cause just his streamer and his amp would be $1200.00 plus in my neck of the woods. He also must have got a smoking deal on the RP 600's not to mention the rest of his kit.
Not everyone has 3000 to 5000 to spare on a system but, yet we do like the sound systems, so in my case i try upgrading by selling and replacing with a new component with that money and so on.
You never know about pricing. Back in the day, I was looking at Von Schweikert & PSB Gold i speakers. Hmm, which one, the Schweikert's were $3600, the PSB's $2800. I thought the PSB's sounded better, and was about ready to purchase when the UPS delivery guy dropped one PSB speaker on the ground denting it on the front top, and rear side. The dealer called PSB, and got permission to sell them for $1200. I couldn't believe it, more money to invest elsewhere. Buy used, run across deals like mine, and you can get a lot for your money.
You should ask viewers to send you info amd pictures of their setup regardless of price, and keep.doing the under 1K setups videos, as well as like 1-2K setup videos, and 2K+ videos... Maybe you could also do some videos showing some setups of people who jist love music but aren't exactly specialized Audiophile setups.... I have a couple setups, my home theater system which is in the process of beong upgraded from a 90s amp and Bose Acoustimass to a new Denon AVR unit and some new speakers(unsure which ones at the moment). Hoping to find a setup that works good for home theater and gaming, as well as music, the Bose sucks for music. In another part of the house I have a 70s Sansui 6060, with matching Sansui speakers, as well as Pioneer tower speakers from the 90s, a Record player, a small 2ch DJ mixer for other inputs....this is a practice area and alsp just for listening to music when doing other hobbies in this space.... Headphones for all sorts of uses include some ATH-M50x and Pioneer HDJ-X5.
The photo at 4:40 isn't grainy enough. Someone should let him know that with all the money he saved on his setup he can buy an actual camera and throw the potato he used for this picture away.
Should make this a permanent series, maybe once a week or every other week, very interesting and gives a lot of ideas.

That $4K came dear to me even though it was a Steal of a Deal (it seems anyway).
I have just gotten a Refurbished Sansui 9090 125 wpm Receiver that I'm sure can drive these new FOCAL's but the Mc stuff is not easy to understand and interconnect.
Three McIntosh unites:
Mc 275
Mc 85 Receiver
Mc 2200 Preamp.
You can experiment with the Focals and how them up to 8, 4 or 12(?) ohm output, no harm done. Whatever sounds best to you.
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Thanks Steve!!!
Hey Steve any Audiophiliac play lists to listen to while we are all quarantined during this global pandemic?
I've gotta get me some of that Schitt!
I want that seat/ record holder/ sub cover item that fellow with the klipsch speakers has.
I know this might open a whole can of worms you don’t want to deal with.
What if folks sent pics of systems, much like they did. But you give the tips on different speakers placements.
Enjoy all your info
Thanks
That system at 2:28 that can't be so low cost can it really ? Just the network streamer alone must cust a bit.
Hey Steve, how about doing a viewers system with DIY speakers/components?
One problem, in my current room I cannot place speakers near walls, and Totems sound best that way.
hi Steve and good job :)))))
what you think about isolate speakers from ground ?
Steve, can you review the Golden Ear Technologies Triton series speaker?
Nice video 👌 making me think about how and what 🤔
The Turntable in the first photo is a Sansui SR-222 (i.e. MK 1), not a Sansui SR-222 MK2
2:00 Can't be under $1000 unless it fell off the back of a truck. 6:00 Have these headphones, and have since new (actually have two), in need of new cords but sound great.
Are Pyle or Rockville amps any good
Can we get a go fund me for the guy using cinder blocks as speaker stands?
Still cheap as hell and gets the job done haha ;-)
I think it looks good and it works
👍👍👍
I have some more cinder blocks I can donate.
Love it! Nice systems
I've just invested for my budget a
Fluance RT81 turntable £210
Q Acoustics 3050 floorstanding speakers £320
Yamaha Rs202DBL stereo dab receiver amplifier £170
KabelDirekt speaker cable
Sounds fantastic after all the reviews and my requirements I went with these.
What's your thoughts everyone
Kewl stuff guys, cheers
I dig this guys channel so much. I have a question if I get my music from streaming sources what’s the best way to get it to speakers? From a laptop or from a mobile phone via wires or the built into the receiver way. I know streaming music is a less than source but if that’s what I’m working with then how do I avoid losing sound on the way to speakers.
If it sounds good to you, who cares.
@@richelh Hey thank you Richel. I have a store near me selling them. I think I will check it out.
I need to shop where Richie from Brooklyn shops, cause just his streamer and his amp would be $1200.00 plus in my neck of the woods. He also must have got a smoking deal on the RP 600's not to mention the rest of his kit.
I had the biggest savings from the Marantz Amp, picked it up locally for $250, still amazed I ran into it.
Love this video 🥰
This is better than watching porn. More, more, more!
Wow I remember some of these pieces back when they were new.
6:20 ‘Eyyy, love me a pair of HP-1s!
Love this!
Where to send pics and itemized list for next time? I have several low fi mid fi and hi fi.
Prost.
Bozak, I believe where made here in Connecticut .
My LS50 with NAD c338 Came in at a hair over $1000 US was a good deal.
Steve do a dyi speaker roundup
I want to know how Richie got that setup for $1100! I have that amp and used I paid almost a grand.
I picked up the Marantz amp locally for $250, crazy deal!
Interesting how many of the systems are displayed with guitars
The photo at 4:40 isn't grainy enough. Someone should let him know that with all the money he saved on his setup he can buy an actual camera and throw the potato he used for this picture away.
Cheap and cheerful!
Live like a king using Amazon to assemble a starter system.
