I never realized how different they were. And as a kid, I had a VHS and a DVD copy. (For some reason, my parents bought me the DVD one year for Christmas.) I remember Phil saying in the Commentary that they re-animated this due to how rushed they had to do it, but I never noticed how much changed. Growing up, I only noticed toys added to Laura and Lenny's living room.
In the 1996 version, Bob, Larry, and Junior are still wearing their winter clothes while George is reading them the Birth of Jesus. In the 1998 version, Bob and Larry are not wearing their winter clothes, but Junior is still wearing his winter hat.
I grew up with the '96 version. And, unpopular opinion, it's the better one. Yeah I know it was rushed, but when you look at the majority of their reactions throughout this segment, it shows them serious, confused, then smiling because they get the message. You don't see that in the '98 version.
