- The writer-director of JANET PLANET joins the film’s editor in praising Maurice Pialat’s unsentimental depiction of childhood, their collaborator Maria von Hausswolff’s cinematography in GODLAND, and the ineffable magic of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

I love hearing these two artists just talk about what they like and what excites them. I could watch them for hours. I saw Annie Baker's THE FLICK in NYC and it was MAJOR. she is such a brilliant creative voice right now. love seeing this. thanks criterion.
One of the greatest playwrights of our time made a movie and did a Criterion Closet video?!?!
Can I be blessed twice? YES I CAN!
Kudos to the editor of this trip to the Criterion Closet. We appreciate you.
Annie Baker is one of my favorite playwrights - so excited to see her included in this series! :)
I like how Annie and Lucian are mentioning Godland. I should check that movie out.
Design for Living is Ernst Lubitsch/Gary Cooper at their best. Glad it's gotten picked from the closet guests a couple times now.
Excited to see more screenplays from Baker. Generation defining playwright.
Annie Baker made a movie!?! Her plays are phenomenal, I could watch and read them over and over.
Lol her reaction in the beginning "I am very happy to be here!!" "Amen!" -Coming to America
Annie Baker is one of the greatest playwrights of our time! Can't wait for her new film.
I went to high school with Annie Baker! I don't know this Lucian fella but he seems nice enough
Thanks for letting us know!
@@ruling528 any questions?
@@scooterlibbie Was it apparent she was set for greatness even at that early stage?
@@General_Puffball No
I've always wondered: what specific movies are in the collection for each guest. Does it change or does the closet contain every movie in the Criterion Collection. I've actually uploaded a list of every film part of the Criterion and went thru and picked out movies that I would select if I was invited to the Criterion closet! I know that sounds crazy lol.
which varda film did he pick out? struggling to catch it
Daguerréotypes
Daguerreotypes
Godland is amazing.
like can like you like guys like sound like more like doltish?
HELL YESS!
ANNIE BAKER
The cringe closet
I think this video shows you the side of filmmaking that's very very articulate and yet lack of a better expression sanitized. I'm pretty sure if you are a film student or behind the scenes writer, it'll be more like a classroom than a casual outing. I won't go as far to say it's boring, but it's not the usual fandom experience.
did anyone else feel like he took over the talking, but was more interested in what she might've had to say?
Snore
Criterion is doing an awfully good job at encouraging viewers to abandon these videos by continuing to bring in filmmakers who seem incapable of speaking without using the word “like” as a placeholder in ALMOST EVERY SENTENCE. There may be nothing that makes a person sound more brainless than that particular habit. Between the two of them, they use “like” 42 (!) times in a grammatically incorrect way.
I couldn't wait for them to take their movies and...LIKE...leave!
Yeah? Well, y'know, that's like your opinion, man.
@@Bojac 👌
The vocal fry, the questioning affirmation (constant doubt), the college style pedantry... I can't fucking stand these people
That's how every american under the age of 50 talks.
First 420.69
This segment was about five minutes longer than it needed to be.
Good.
first
who?
"like", "like", "like', .......... snore
they're both trying WAY too hard . . .
I wish you could show trailers over the audio of the movies they talk about. Seeing a piece of the film would really help decide what I want to seek out from these.
it's a shame that there are so many negative comments about this video being "boring."
I am happy to hear both Annie and Lucian's thoughts about the movies they love and how they look at them as filmmakers.
Especially because they offer unique perspectives as playwright and editor.
My mind heard L'Enfance Nue and immediately came Timothee in Lady Bird lmao
I pray Baker doesn't sell out and become a Barbie director...Please god. Janet Planet is just about as perfect a movie as one can get.
I love this video. Would fancy more double ups to hear more fascinating conversations between artists.
Bresson and Pialat picks require instant likes.
I love Annie Baker just so much. Such a genius she is
People in the film industry seem to have a natural gift for oxymorons. This film is so AMBIGUOUS followed by so BLUNT. It is something that just amuses my very limited brain, probably as it is so common and paradoxical; both the behaviour and my brain.
Great 😊
Very enjoyable
So they didn't take any movies?
Godland is the unknown masterpiece of recent years.
this was a good one. rare one of these where they both seem to actually want to dig into the films as they pick them
I could do this all day 😢
I’m curious what Kevin Costner’s Picks are.🤔
Probably all westerns!
Can a man and a woman be inside a closet for considerable time and just be friends? Hahaha! I like how they not only agreed on some films they've seen, they also recommended films for each other. Does that Varda collection get picked every time?
First 2.0
Typical pretentious film fans over analyzing a film. Just say you like it and carry on. I bet they're the common Criterion Collection fans, they buy the films only when Barnes & Nobles has a 50% sale & keep them sealed, never watch them, pretend they saw it or stream it online.
Both boring and incoherent. This wasn't a good episode.
😅wow
Someone picking Pialat finally. Based, very based.
Who is this Annie Baker? Has she done something substantial?
If you consider winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama substantial, then yes.
@@yikyaks that's cool! impressed.
Boring too much talking
She's a writer and director, and says like every other word.... that's a great habit for storytelling. Also, her films are shit. And she has awesome taste in shifty movies.
They should choose me to enter the Criterion Closet. @criterion think about it!
It is reached the point where I am unable to stomach the number of "like" thrown in to every sentence. It is jarring to hear such monotonous language. Of course, it all started in 'merka but has travelled the globe. Sad.
You sound like a real criterion head
they'll, like, let, like, ANYONE, like, in, like, now.
@@tbwatch88I mean she is a Pulitzer prize winning playwright, and y'all sound unable to grapple with basic elements of language like filler words
@@henry0798for some reason this episode broke a lot of people's brains despite containing better discussion than most of the closet eps
@@henry0798 pulitzer means zilch these days. and her diction is rebarbative--there's no denying that, mate.
