Raleno PLV-C80 Review: Absolute HIDDEN GEM of a Light

  • In this video I review Raleno PLV-C80, a super budget LED video light that is one of the best hidden gems I've found to date.
    It's as good or better than the Amaran 60d and GVM SD80S when it comes to brightness and color accuracy, and even has some features or accessories that those lights don't, including a metal body and mounting yoke.
    Most importantly, it's significantly less expensive than even the cheapest alternatives out there. It's hard to find a reason NOT to recommend this light, but what do you think?

    I just picked one up and love it. Going to get another. I'm a wedding photographer and find it is great for shooting outside to get even lighting for the bride and groom while in shade without blowing out the background or my subjects. The reason for the second light is for larger groups such as the wedding party. So when I can't use natural lighting, this little gem is fantastic.

    Picked it up from your link this week. Paired it at home with a Neewer 22" octagonal softbox and love it. It is great that it retains the brightness setting when turned off via smart plug. Update: it came with a remote and I was able to set the brightness to 7%, so those two issues appear to be fixed.

    This may answer a lot of peoples questions about mobile, decently bright, and decently accurate color for lights. Plus, super affordable. What a crazy pick up.

    Your vid is a year old at this point but I found it informative. I just purchased one as a test of quality.
    I, like you, found it to be a gem for the money spent.
    I have done some quick tests at home and I am impressed.
    There was an immediate small negative right out of the box though. The "manual" was only six pages in english. Perhaps I missed it but nowhere did I find a reference to the recommended batteries for remote location use.
    Hence my google search bringing me to your video. Count me as a new subscriber.
    ETA: I plan on purchasing at least one more.

      Thanks, I'm glad the video was helpful! Although, it's only about a month old, not a year old, hehe.
      It uses standard NP-F batteries, so the only thing to know is that the bigger you get, the longer you can run the light :)

      @@NewLayer The info was cut short. I did that one thing which is been warned of for most of my life... I made an assumption. Totally my mistake!
      However I'm happy to find that this info is super timely.

    Thank you for this! Being new to lighting things can get overwhelming, especially with all the "trending" brands on TH-cam. I just got two of these today and finished testing them. Gotta say, I couldn't be more pleased with the quality. While on Amazon, I also found the Tolifo SK-135FR which are identical to the Raleno build but are RGB and come in 135W and 180W variants, boasting 17000 lux. I got two of the 135W because they're only $200 and currently $40 off during Amazon's spring sale. Would love to hear your professional review of them if you happen to try them out. Thanks for this find... I can finally begin practicing my lighting.

      You're welcome! I got some Tolifo lights to test, and I believe they are the same brand behind the scenes. I'll hopefully get to them soon, but I have a ton of things in the to-do list, both on and off TH-cam, right now :)

    Found one today at a store for 45 bucks. It just didn’t come with the plug or batteries. I said I’d take a chance on it. I have batteries that work with it so that’s a plus. Really nice light! Tracks for the review 👍🏾

    I ended up getting two of these units... my only "complaint" is there is no umbrella hole on the bracket AND you have to use the 970 battery only and you have to use two. Other than those minor issues I love this light! I should mention I am a portrait photographer not a videographer... these lights have me seriously considering ditching my speedlights! Thanks for the helpful review...

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Although I never use umbrellas, I can definitely understand people (especially coming from photography) wanting that!
      And unfortunately, NP-F batteries don't output enough voltage for 60 watts, so dual NP-F batteries will always be needed to double the voltage up to v-mount battery levels.
      Hope the lights work out for you!

      @@NewLayer I have been using these lights for portrait work and have gotten to the point in my garage studio never using flash. One aspect I never thought about was the actual flash of shoe mount or monolights... the models really appreciate not having lights flash at them. I got one Amaran 60d, now is up to 170US dollars... you think this two lights mix well ?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! You can compare them here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=RaLeno+PLV-C80&light2=Aputure+Amaran+60d
      The things to note are the CCT and Tint. On my 60d, the CCT was 5586K and the tint was 0.3 towards magenta. The Raleno PLV-C80 CCT was 5406K and the tint was 0.2 towards magenta.
      The tints are essentially identical, which is really great, and the CCT of each is within 200K of each other, so the color difference should be unnoticeable as well.
      You should be all good! Hope that helps :)
