Cyclists, We Are at War. The Northern Bypass is no longer Safe for Cycling. Weaponise Yourself!

- The cases of muggings and insecurity towards cyclists have increased in Nairobi. First it was the Thogoto climb on the Southern bypass, then Peponi Road, Redhill link road, Thika road (Juja area) and now the Northern bypass. Cyclists, we are at war! It's time to weaponise yourselves. Don't be empty-handed and defenseless if the mugging attempt on you is violent and threatening to your life. Carry a screw driver, a pen knife or anything to defend yourself and be ready. Cycle with a friend or 2 if you can. On Tuesday 19th January, a mugging attempt was made on me by 3 thugs on a motorbike while i was at 50kph on the Northern bypass. Please note that even speed no longer deters these thugs. Six years of cycling in Nairobi and this has never happened to me.
Be careful out there! So many idlers were seated on the side of the road but none came to my aid or reacted in any way. Don't assume that anyone will help you if anything is to happen to you in Nairobi. Prepare yourself well to be independent in case of an emergency.
They tried to snatch my phone from my back pocket but I fought them off. I fell in the struggle as they dashed away for their lives and I'm currently nursing painful bruises from the tarmac but I'm recovering well.
Well, its not over. I'm still fighting. First, let's try the law.
Hi Moses, I’ve recognised that area - ngomongo village because the guy who stole my bike came from there. That is a very dangerous place. As u said, cyclists are generally very strong. I tracked down the culprit and handed him over to the police. Now i hear he’s out on bail and still on the prowl I’m sure. I used to live in mirema but i had to move when it was stolen coz I couldn’t bear to lose another bike. Now i have a beast of a bike (hybrid canyon)which i ride elsewhere. Every cyclist out there should be very alert. Kudos for sharing my brother. I’m sure tumepitana kwa iyo barabara na tukasalimiana. Very cool bike. Stay strong stay safe
Pole sana Mose, it’s a sad situation and I hope you achieve the target of catching these criminals... It’s also very important now to build on this experience and galvanise the cycling community to change the attitudes in all spheres. Because the problem will only reduce or cease to exist when we understand the roots of it... The bigger a community which acts with one voice the easier it is to pull/force the decision makers to listen and make changes needed. It’s a big wheel to turn but it must be pushed for it to turn and eventually move forward so everyone can profit from the changes... As of now - as hard as it is - the police can only pick up the pieces after things have fallen “apart” and they’re not as effective as we would want them to be - truth be told. Their priorities are somewhere else...

Pole sana Amira. I cycle on this route often and I am slow so this has freaked me out. I haven''t gone out again since Tuesday. The idlers have definitely increased, great job in reporting this extensively. I hope the cops take action.

Pole sana Moses, We have had similar incidences on the southern bypass and some amount of action has been initiated. Keep up the good spirit and no giving up. We go back stronger and better equipped. Would be great to learn where we can get the Chilli & Pepper spray though

Best Advise I can give is to invest on a pepper or chilli spray 🌶️. Most of them dont wear a glass covered Helmet. Sorry for that.
Good advice, there's normally suppositions that they're illegal in Kenya but I can't say for sure, I have seen them sold around and if they help, and they're not illegal, that's a super solution.

You can make your own..grind the chillies to a fine mixture and add oil,make sure it’s a fine runny solution..add to a small spray bottle and spray the mist behind you at them .
