Thanks! Two years later still useful. Had a 4in1 MPM bootloader failure on my trusty T12 Pro that prevented flashing updates . The MPM in a T16 looks is very similar to the T12 Pro with the 5 pin mini plug, so gave this a go. Worked perfectly!

If anyone is having problems with their cp2102 especially the driver, just use zadig and install the serial driver and you should be good to go.
Thanks again JB for this wonderful tutorial.

I also do the same, watch quad videos of fixes/repairs/modifications/upgrades of products I don't have, because more than once I've remembered a detail in the future when I eventually own that product or see someone else asking for help about that product and can point them towards the video that could help them.

Thanks worked perfectly! I used a FTD1232 usb to serial adapter and then wired it up like you showed. Green and white together to 3.3v, red to tx, yellow to rx, black to ground. Plugged in and showed the new com port as soon as Windows10 figured out the drivers which was about 60 seconds. Upload and done. Also did the external charging mod with the high capacity 5000mah 21700 battery pack from Bob AZ on RCGroups. Love this radio.

Hello Joshua, please make a video about the current "bad radio data" problem with the Jumper T16 where you loose all data on the radio after you write to the radio with Open TX companion. This is a big problem since 2.3.x Thank you!

  • @bmanske1

FYI to you and others who may have problems.
I got a T16 pro just as they came out with a bootloader the ...85 version.
I followed your open TX companion video and added my first model FrSky D16.
Now I see that v1.2.1.83 added automatic tuning of RF frequency during binding for FrSky and remembered a range issues and decided to update by placing the firmware multi-stm-opentx-aetr-noinv-v1.3.0.47 (same as you selected in this video).
I updated the internal module and got the message in the module status line "No MULTI_TELEMETRY detected". Much messing around later... To get this to go away I had to go to my model and change the multi protocol module to off and then back on... set it back to FrSky D16 before it behaved properly. Turning the radio off and then on again will not be enough.
You probably didn't encounter this as your first model was Crossfire and so it wasn't using the internal module.

Great video however ran in to two issues or maybe not issues but something to consider for folks that may not know enough about the computer end of things. Number one they need to to get the driver software up and running on the pc or mac for the 2102. I myself was wondering why my com port was not registering but figured it out quickly. Second thing that happened that just about gave me a heart attack was this. After everything loaded up well I did what you said and plugged in a battery then powered up to check firmware authenticity and was greeted with a tone and the on screen message saying EMERGENCY ONLY. I said on no man don't tell me this is going to have to go back to jumper now lol !!!!!! On my radio the T16 Pro there is a safety switch on the rear and if you do not have that switch pushed in by placing the rear housing back on you get that tone and message. I thought about it instantly after having the panic moment and said there must be a safety switch ,and there was. All good now thanks to your videos as always so please keep delivering the great content. Thank you much........

Fark. If I order the cp210 adapter from Banggood it will take 3-4 weeks. If I order it from Amazon the total cost will be upwards of 20 bucks (I don't have Amazon Prime), and it will arrive in probably a week. I need that money for a new flight controller I'm saving up for. I wonder if Fry's has them in stock. That's only a 40-mile drive RT. I have an USB AVR thing for flashing ESCs (back in the day), but it isn't clear whether that would work. I don't mind performing the update procedure, but i wish it did not require this adapter that I don't have on hand. Meanwhile since I updated my T16 to OpenTx 2.3.4, it's flashing "firmware update recommended" in the model setup using the internal module. It's too cold to fly anyway, my hands stiffen up pretty fast, I guess I'll just order it from Banggood. And I still haven't ordered a case for the T16! I better cheer up - things could always be worse. Happy New Year!

As far as I can see, any USB to serial adapter like the ftdi and other chipped devices will work just fine, you don't need the exact one used in this video.

I am having the worst luck in doing this update. I have tried doint this update with the Arduino Nano, AND the Arduino Uno. And of course as a Mac user i needed to borrow my brothers HP Windows computer. I Cant seem to get past the 1/3 Erasing. EVERYTHING! Except doing this JB's way. If the Arduino can be used as a USB to Serial Adaptor i am having the worst luck EVER!!! This is the worst firmware upgrade process i have ever had to do, and i can not seem to find the same internal module available for purchase as a plug and play situation... I knew i should have waited a bit longer before making the purchase....

    • @rogertinder668
      @rogertinder668 5 ปีที่แล้ว

As a mac user I feel your pain. I had a similar issue - when I plugged in the adapter to USB, I the windows computer recognized something was plugged in, but did not create a new serial port for it. I had to download specific drivers for the adapter on my Windows machine - something you dont have to do on a Mac. Once I had the drivers installed, it immediately created a new serial port when plugged in and the process went smoothly from that point. Good luck.

They are more or less the same but be sure the FTDI is not outputting 5v or it will fry the module. FTDI usually output 5v but some are switchable to 3.3v. CP210 usually outputs 3.3v.

Is it still safe to use the transmitter until I can obtain the CP210 adapter and flash the internal module or do you suggest I wait to update until I get the CP210 adapter? I fly drones and wings with this transmitter and use spektrum rx on my wing. I'm aware of a major bug fix for the spektrum rx so I wanted to update to OpenTX but want to make sure it's safe to do and then address the internal module firmware later on.

    • @JoshuaBardwell

After you have flashed the latest version, you now have bootloader. So you can flash the firmware as follows.
First, download the firmware file to the FIRMWARES folder on your SD card. In the T16, long-press SYS, then page to SD card contents. Use the scroll wheel to navigate into the FIRMWARES folder. Highlight the file, long-press the scroll wheel, and choose "flash internal module".

After replacing the cable and connector I get about 90mw (tested with imrc power meter new version). I chose to use a hot air reflow gun to remove the connector and solder my cable directly but I have seen a few people suggest you can find cables with the connector on it. I have not checked the swr yet. I get noticably less rssi warnings when flying around my tree filled property after the mod. The stock cable is junk.

If you changed from UFL to direct-solder, most likely that is the reason for the increased power output. But many people will fry the board trying to direct-solder coax this small. It's possible that a low-loss coax cable would improve the output some even with UFL though. But getting one the correct length is important.

Thanks. My question was regarding internal module, so i suppose i could do your trick inverted 😊 an aux will be more convenient, if that could be coupled with a "pre arm" function to avoid to reswitch it on by mistake, and forgetting in for a while...
A second idea is to be able to boot the transmitter in low power mode, in order to be "safer" on bench and on the field regarding health for "high" frequency users that fpv players could be. Often, the remote could be on few minutes before and afer the flight (so your trick is usefull for me 👍).
Nevertheless, 3 minutes trip by flight will cause to boot very frequently, and i am not sure that electronics life tests are checking it. I won't do it with a computer after each game over... 😅
