A short movie of Stannard Rock Lighthouse. I was there in August 2017 for my employer (Superior Watershed Partnership) who currently owns the lighthouse, to inspect the condition and install a plaque.
i served on lightships and lighthouses while in the U S Coast Guard from 1963 to 1967 at that time the lighthouses were being automated . the duty out on the lighthouses and lightships was great duty i loved it and today i can say i am one of the maybe few people left in this country who had this experience . was great to see this video brought back many memories.
It would be great if you would record some of your memories and share them on TH-cam. I am sure that I am not alone when I say that I would love to hear your stories! 😊 Thank you for your service.
My dad, William Maxwell, was part of the last crew of four Costguardsmen to serve on this lighthouse. He died when the lighthouse exploded in 1961. Here is a link to the Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stannard_Rock_Light
Wow. That's so sad. Your father was the only person to die in the explosion. I'm sorry to learn that. The man is part of history now. I'm sorry for your loss.
Beautiful. And terrifying! That was a GOOD day, imagine a BAD day. 24 miles of water between you and eternity. WOW! Surrounded by miles of water. i heard the last estimate for a possible restoration at over 2 million. Sounds about right. What would you do with it? Sell tickets? The worlds most remote B&B? It kind of borders on the freakish curiosity of how long could you stand it. An hour or so and I'd want to leave. A nice place to visit, if your return was guaranteed. No promises with a place like that. He went to check it out, and never came back. I could do alot of that work. Electrical, brick & mortar iron work and welding, but you'd have to pay me a mint to go out there!
You're correct. It was going to be way too dark down there for my cheap camera and little flashlight. We did go down there prior to shooting the video though. Here's what the two "basement" levels look like: photos.app.goo.gl/qBgoh6WzP3vqFHDn9
@@jeffkoch1606 Thank you -- I am still trying to understand the configuration. The ladder from the fog signal building takes you to the second floor. Then there are 4 floors above the second floor. Below the second floor is the first floor with the shower? Then the basement floor. In the basement is there another hole to a floor that is not used? So eight floors total. I am looking at the line drawing here: www.lakesuperior.com/the-lake/maritime/333-stannard-rock-lighthouse-the-loneliest-place-on-the-continent/
Oh and the pictures are great. Do the hallways just go in circles? Sometimes it just looks like the hallways just end like there is nothing just a wall.
Hopefully we can raise some money to begin restoration efforts. A fundraising campaign has just begun, which will include a documentary about the lighthouse. More info here: www.stannardrock.org/
Yes, the lighthouse was manned for a very long time. There used to be living quarters on every level. There's lots of good info on the web about the lighthouse, including: mqtmaritimemuseum.com/stannard-rock/ and coastguardnews.com/former-coast-guardsman-returns-to-stannard-rock-lighthouse-54-years-after-explosion/2015/08/10/

Great. Lighthouses are so physical and spiritual.

Amazing how beat up and deteriorated this lighthouse is considering that it is in the middle of a fresh water lake.
Sweet! I wonder if any work has been done on it yet.
Interesting life, that of a lightkeeper.
Requires restoration. .. would love to go with the renovation team.
Amazing.
Restore the lighthouse. It can be beautiful again.
I'm guessing its been automated for quite some time. If only the walls could talk what stories would come out.
I am indian, how apply the lighthouse job, i am ready,
What does the water drop off too?
я так вам завидую !!
Ill bet there are no spiders or rats on that place
Ha never thought of that.
You didn't go into the crib. There are two floors down there. One floor of these basement floors had a shower. What else is down there?

Was the lighthouse ever meant to be manned? I saw no sanitary/living facilities in the video...
