I just don’t get making a sports watch these days without a micro adjust system (or something like Cartier where all links are basically half links). The wrist swells in the heat. It is just stupid to not factor that in when designing a sports watch.
1:44 it is mimicking the Shinshu birch forest near the Grand Seiko factory and not mimicking the bark of the birch tree like you mentioned. Thus the dial design is accurate, please get your facts right.
Well I use my watch for telling time all the time. Its more practical than taking up my Phone and its quicker. Why do people keep saying nobody checks the time with a watch?!
Do you think the size of this one would look good on a 6 1/3 inch circumference wrist? I probably would have to put it on leather strap, I doubt that bracelet would fit me.
The only regret i have with your chanel is that you're not much of a strap guy. This quality of writing and videography, this quality of watches, and still very basic straps options... A saffiano, a nice croc/shark/ostrich, a nice sailcloth or a refined marine nationale strap would be so welcome options to display those fabulous watches you are presenting with such talent.
A great new watch by GS. But my enthusiasm for it has been tempered somewhat due to that ugly overtly chunky bracelet. I wasn’t aware it was 22mm. Just way too wide for a 40mm watch. And the taper to the clasp is only 2mm. Giving it an inelegant clunkiness more reminiscent of a huge Panerai than an elegant everyday wear. And things don’t improve that much on a strap either, as it’s still that in-proportionate 22mm at the lugs. They really need to bring it down to 20mm and have it taper to about 16/17mm. That would look much better I reckon.
I find it strange you are so bothered by that proportion. Rolex DJ36 is 36mm case and 20mm lug width. That is very nearly the exact same proportion to this gs. But no one is bothered by the rolex proportions
Having had both on my wrist I think it has something to do with the absolute numbers not the ratio... like in proportion it should be the same but the GS just seems a tad clunky .... I feel like a 36mm gets away with that more easily

Own and love this watch. I reach for it more than my Daytona - finished better than my Patek. The bracelet is perfect, the lack of a serious taper makes it feel like a solid tool watch. It could do with a micro-adjust, but that is the only downside I can find. Based on the 1967 GS44 case - date of my birth.
Grand Seiko is just terrible at bracelets. They either make the width too small, 19mm on a 40mm+ dial, or now this, an obscene 22mm on a 40 mm dressy watch?! Seriously, who is in charge of these blunders at GS?
I agree...their bracelets are quite boring and unoriginal but I also think this is how they keep their prices down. The SBGT241 is one of the few GS watches that have a unique bracelet.
Yet again, incredible presentation of an incredible watch! The movement in this watch is just out of this world (aka price range). I think this alone easily puts the watch into that price category and I think GS knows so they did it. And I think it's a great step for GS. I hope they will still stay close to 5k with most of their models but they really deserve going up to the 10k territory where this watch clearly belongs to! Btw. the 'White Birch' naming doesn't come from ONE birch bark but from a whole forest of white birches there. So the dial layout does reflect narrow growing birch trees. That way the pattern does make sense again ;-) I think they have such a picture on their website / micro page for the watch.
1:43. It’s not the bark. It’s the forest itself. So it’s right that it’s got vertical grooves on the dial. You’re looking into the forest. Not a sideways strip of bark.
The new SLGA009 is a much better looking watch and the movement is a lot better. The color of the 005 does not look like the white birch. 009 closely resembles the white birch.
Agree with you in all accounts. This was a great first effort and the spring drive white birch just steps right in as an amazing flagship. I much prefer the whiter more subtle dial that allows the indices to pop like jewels and the dial texture is still really special when you look a little closer.
Yet they still can’t add a proper fucking micro-adjust. I’ve owned 6 Grand Seikos. None of them have lasted due to that issue. They are just not comfortable enough. The Snowflake is the exception. But it’s due to the titanium. Their heavier steel pieces don’t have the luxury of a lower weight.

I've had (over the last few years): the aforementioned SBGA311, SBGE201, SBGJ203, SBGH001, SBGR311 (my favorite of the steel pieces), and a SBGV007. Hell, I just moved on from my SBGA311 a few weeks ago. Sold it to Eric Rebes (aka rebes88). Tell me more about what I've bought and sold before. You seem to be an expert.

Seiko watches have there own style and dna and rolex has theres, bracelet included id advice folks that dont like their way of doing things to just get a different brand an stop complaining 😉

Micro-adjustments and blued screws for finishing would be nice. That said, I don't think GS will charge less than $9,000 for a 9SA5-movement watch. The white birch is the most affordable 9SA5-watch GS offers (and may be for some time).
Great review and photography. I like the watch and brand. However, how did we go from $5600 just a few years ago for pretty much any GS up to $9000 for this time only watch? $7000 would be a lot more realistic.

Having tried it on - it’s a lovely watch. Dial and movement are spectacular. But the bracelet? What is it about GS that they can’t get bracelets right?? It’s just too broad and the taper is minimal. Just too chunky and at odds with the refined watch head. I really don’t understand it. That said, I will be buying a Shunbun.

Always love your reviews. The 22mm lugwidth raised eyebrows for me, but I assure you it's a non issue. I actually think it sits better with the wider width. It also makes the watch more sporty if that makes sense. This is a perfect daily watch. Love it!

Stunning! My GRAIL!!!! But I can’t understand why they chose 22mm lugs??? Given a 40mm case, it should have a 20mm lugs and the bracelet should taper to 18mm and of course micro adjustments is a no brainer.
Just got this watch yesterday. Amazing from all aspects, the dial is unbelievable beautiful, comfortable bracelet ( if GS can add micro adjustment function it will be even better, but the bracelet fits me well, so I am happy) decorated movement, for this price point, I don’t think you can find another watchmaker provide another decorated movement to compete with 9SA5. Bonus point: you can get discounts for this loving timepiece 😎 Highly recommended!
When I see the white birch face it is reminiscent of multiple white birches standing side by side (so vertical) and not the texture of one white birch tree (horizontal as you point out). Do an image search for “white birches in winter”. Great vid and amazing watch!
You mixed up things and you simply didn't understand this watch. Comparing a GS with mass products? Bro... Btw: there is a micro adjustment, you can set the bracelet length with +- 3mm with replacing a whole link by a half. If it's not enough you shouldn't use steel braclets.
There are much better bracelets with adjustment systems on watches that cost half the price. I love Grand Seiko, but their bracelets aren’t up to their own standards.
@@YoureTerrific You cannot generalize on the basis of one piece. It was intentional, that this bracelet and the watch case has less zaratsu polished surface - so you don't have to afraid about micro scratches. They got many responses from owners related to this, I think that's the reason. This watch is made for everyday use. Heavy, massive, shock and magnetic resistant. It would be worse if the bracelet has polished sections, because the dial is what matters. I think it's good as it is.
Too much silver! Too too too much silver. Needed more “white elements” to call this a white birch inspired dial. And they should have darkened the markers and hands like the silver dialed VC Overseas. Would have made it more visually appealing and easier to read. May have made the dial less off putting for me as well. But this is all just opinion… my opinion. I spoke with my wallet, as I cancelled my purchase after viewing it live instead of going off GS photos (which for the first time, made a watch look better than the actual watch instead of worse, which their photos usually do). I do want a GS with this movement though. It’s 🔥!
I've been really trying to love grand Seiko, but something about their proportions always throws me off. I genuinely can't put my finger on it. The dial is beautiful though.
@@YoureTerrific Haha... l won't. I have one dozen modern GS and more than a dozen vintage ones. The Grand cocktail sbgy003 is still my favourite in the collection.
As for the vintage, l have the 5646 5010 which has a golden olive textured dial which imo more intricate than the white birch. I would hold my breath for the masterpiece sbgz001, though. You know the engraving was first used in the 60's Presmatic hibeat 5146 7020. I don't have this, but, l have the 5146 7000. It has a clover leaf texture engraving on the case. Got no idea how they were made. The clover was first used on the seikomatic clover 8305 7000. I have this too. Both in mint condition. Got to see in person how fine and intricate they are. The ones you see on the internet are not in the original condition. They have been re-brushed.
The 22 mm lug width is confusing. They were using 19mm lug width (which I hate) on many 39-40 mm watches that I was interested in and now they go up to 22mm (which I don’t really like). Sigh…. Someday I’ll find the right GS for me with 20mm. Also, love your channel.
Most comfortable bracelet watch I ever won. For me it's very easy to read. This is amazing Grand Seiko and much much better than all of the previous model.
The 22mm lug width is silly on a 40mm watch and looks even sillier on the side view. The dial is unique bit will not age well as it looks like a 1990's style resort curtain.
Great video and great watch. I have the SBGJ201 Mt. Iwate GMT. Amazing watch, as is this one. This rivals if not beats the coaxial escapement that Omega has. Between Spring Drive and the 9SA5, GS is crushing it. Now, some smaller sizes would be nice.

Fed up of Rolex games moving over to Omega, Panerai and Grand Seiko. Although I'd buy a datejust 126200 and have the bracelet and top lugs brushed.

As all Grand Seikos it could be perfect but it isn’t. 22 mm lugs, too heavy dial pattern visual effect and bracelet tapered almost invisible.
This watch is mostly sold out 😁 so there's that . And when they make a perfect watch be sure to review it for us 😉 cause none has been made yet

The white birch was named after the forest behind the studio not the trees. A forest of white birch trees are lined up vertically, not horizontally.

Perfect dimensions, amazing movement, amazing craftsmanship, fantastic price, but I don’t particularly care for the dial or indices. If it had a simple, subtle sunburst dial, like a date just with rectangular indices, I would already own this watch. Until then…

They innovate constantly. Bi-color ceramic, chronergy escapement, parachrom. Do some research before you post comments.

Stunning! My GRAIL!!!! But I can’t understand why they chose 22mm lugs??? Given a 40mm case, it should have a 20mm lugs and the bracelet should taper to 18mm and of course micro adjustments is a no brainer.

Just got this watch yesterday. Amazing from all aspects, the dial is unbelievable beautiful, comfortable bracelet ( if GS can add micro adjustment function it will be even better, but the bracelet fits me well, so I am happy) decorated movement, for this price point, I don’t think you can find another watchmaker provide another decorated movement to compete with 9SA5.

When I see the white birch face it is reminiscent of multiple white birches standing side by side (so vertical) and not the texture of one white birch tree (horizontal as you point out). Do an image search for “white birches in winter”. Great vid and amazing watch!

You mixed up things and you simply didn't understand this watch. Comparing a GS with mass products? Bro...
Btw: there is a micro adjustment, you can set the bracelet length with +- 3mm with replacing a whole link by a half. If it's not enough you shouldn't use steel braclets.
There are much better bracelets with adjustment systems on watches that cost half the price. I love Grand Seiko, but their bracelets aren’t up to their own standards.
@@YoureTerrific You cannot generalize on the basis of one piece. It was intentional, that this bracelet and the watch case has less zaratsu polished surface - so you don't have to afraid about micro scratches. They got many responses from owners related to this, I think that's the reason. This watch is made for everyday use. Heavy, massive, shock and magnetic resistant. It would be worse if the bracelet has polished sections, because the dial is what matters. I think it's good as it is.
Too much silver! Too too too much silver. Needed more “white elements” to call this a white birch inspired dial. And they should have darkened the markers and hands like the silver dialed VC Overseas. Would have made it more visually appealing and easier to read. May have made the dial less off putting for me as well.
But this is all just opinion… my opinion.
I spoke with my wallet, as I cancelled my purchase after viewing it live instead of going off GS photos (which for the first time, made a watch look better than the actual watch instead of worse, which their photos usually do).
I do want a GS with this movement though. It’s 🔥!
The Seiko SBP143 has 20mm lug width, 40.5mm diameter, 47.6mm lug to lug and 13.2mm height.

I've been really trying to love grand Seiko, but something about their proportions always throws me off. I genuinely can't put my finger on it. The dial is beautiful though.

@@YoureTerrific Haha... l won't. I have one dozen modern GS and more than a dozen vintage ones. The Grand cocktail sbgy003 is still my favourite in the collection.
As for the vintage, l have the 5646 5010 which has a golden olive textured dial which imo more intricate than the white birch.
I would hold my breath for the masterpiece sbgz001, though. You know the engraving was first used in the 60's Presmatic hibeat 5146 7020. I don't have this, but, l have the 5146 7000. It has a clover leaf texture engraving on the case. Got no idea how they were made. The clover was first used on the seikomatic clover 8305 7000. I have this too. Both in mint condition. Got to see in person how fine and intricate they are. The ones you see on the internet are not in the original condition. They have been re-brushed.
The 22 mm lug width is confusing. They were using 19mm lug width (which I hate) on many 39-40 mm watches that I was interested in and now they go up to 22mm (which I don’t really like). Sigh…. Someday I’ll find the right GS for me with 20mm.

Most comfortable bracelet watch I ever won. For me it's very easy to read. This is amazing Grand Seiko and much much better than all of the previous model.
The 22mm lug width is silly on a 40mm watch and looks even sillier on the side view. The dial is unique bit will not age well as it looks like a 1990's style resort curtain.

Great video and great watch. I have the SBGJ201 Mt. Iwate GMT. Amazing watch, as is this one. This rivals if not beats the coaxial escapement that Omega has. Between Spring Drive and the 9SA5, GS is crushing it. Now, some smaller sizes would be nice.
GS is doing stuff nobody else is.
@@YoureTerrific 100% correct. In the 20th century, putting aside quartz, the watch world had really two innovations, Omega's coaxial escapement and GS Spring Drive. I guess GS isn't sitting still with the first of the 21st century. Great stuff. Thanks for the video and describing it.
I liked GS because I got a great watch at a bargain price. This is 10 grand with tax. If it was $6000 I would buy it.
I would have liked a slight taper on the bracelet and the hour marker not being cut off at the tip. Otherwise, the watch is perfect.
