You can interact with companions for affections, and many different reactions for way more situations compared to mass effect. and yes, the freedom is what makes the game THE standard rpg. If artists imitate previous artists and do it well, they’re making good art. Shakespeare was literally recycling historical writings from antiquity turning them into plays and he’s considered (rightly so) a literary genius. While yes, the storyline of Dragon Age origins is nothing exceptional, the world building is remarkable and stands out as one of the most well constructed universes in a video game.

    I fell in love with Mass Effect. Not only because it had interesting story, the world(universe), characters... What I loved the most, EVERYTHING that player wanted to know was explained. The races and what made them unique, also their history and how they all interacted with each other. How the weapons work, spaceships, how and why did humans discover spacejumping and what happened after that... Because everything was explained, it was really easy to emerge to the world and be part of it. High hopes for Exodus. Meanwhile, I have a feeling I have to replay the whole ME-trilogy again.

    Random thought on a recentish spiritual successor done right. Mutant Football League, the spiritual successor and not to be confused with the old 16 bit era Mutant League Football.
    It was made by a bunch of the people who worked on the old Genesis game and plays like my memory wants me to believe that the old game actually was. It is a textbook example of doing a spiritual successor right, using the hands of many of those who worked on the old stuff. Damn fun game even if you don't like football, perhaps especially if you don't like football. You get to do things like bribe the ref, strap dynamite to the ball and intentionally throw an interception, kill a bribed ref and it is a solid, if tongue in cheek, football game. So much fun.
    addendum: Seriously, if you liked Mutant League Football back in the day, you will love this.

    The individual talent is definitely a necessity, but company culture is also a huge part of it. Larian has no notable names besides Swen, the CEO. But he has talked numerous times about the importance in maintaining senior staff who create a good culture underneath them, and have the continuity and experience of their previous titles. Low turnover used to be the sign of a great company. We don't look at this metric nearly as often as we used to.

      @Imjustaguy123 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What makes you think it has "DEI written all over it"? Because the characters are kind of brownish and there is a woman in it? IIRC Mass Effect 1 had some lore that suggested that 200 years in the future people had blended enough to where most humans had a kind of greyish hue or whatever. In the actual game this wasn't obvious, and we had examples of NPCs with distinct asian/indian/african features and typical skin colors. I think of the "people blend and we are all mostly the same grayish brown" in these types of stories not as an attempt to remove white people in a DEI way, but instead like an optimistic view of the future à la Star Trek. That's a very "color blind" classically liberal point of view where we have moved past conflicts about race/sex etc.
      If a game takes place in a contemporary setting, having women be action heroes on a similar level to men (on a large scale) is rather unrealistic and I might think the game has a political agenda it's trying to force on me. But if the game takes place 200 years in the future, or even in a fantasy world, I don't think it needs to be the same thing. In a fantasy setting the sexes might have developed/evolved differently resulting in more similar patterns of behaviour and utility between the sexes. In a sci fi world humanity might be doing genetic modification or medical treatments to smooth over inequities of traits between people. Women as 50% of the combatants on the front lines of a war at that point could be a reality. I think that's a very different thing from black females with prosthetics on the front lines of ww2.

    I would like to add a counterpoint to the part about studios changing despite keeping the same name. What is described in the video is certainly true of many individual instances, there is a flip side to this. A studio or group or conglomeration or whatever you want to call it in whatever context it matters (e.g. video games, music bands, political groups, whatever) can also stay the same, despite a change in membership. Provided whatever that group is, keeps to a certain standard. E.g. a music band kicking a member out for becoming to much of a drunk and causing too many problems.
    Point being that just because the members of a group change, does not automatically mean the group does better or worse. That needs to be judged on the individual performance of whatever group in whatever contect.

      @@asandax6 they haven't ruined any game, you clearly don't even know what they do, they are simply hired by the game devs to get their feedback on the dialog, they have zero power or say over the final product. GG2.0 is even dumber than GG1.0 and that is saying a lot.

    I hate to be that guy, but there seems to be a lot of diversity here... Usually when a sci-fi or fantasy game looks like california in space/medieval europe/alien planet or whatever, it's usually not a sign of quality writing or lore.

      Honestly I don't get all the hate for the ME3 ending. I mean the story was always meant to be a classical tragedy and that's what it ended up being. Very rarely do thing turn out to be "happily ever after".

    You are vastly underselling the importance of Drew Karpyshyn. He wasn't just "a writer on Mass Effect." He was the LEAD writer for Mass Effect 1 and 2 AND KOTOR. IMO, he's the greatest writer in the industry.

    Archetype Entertainment and their extreme old guard dev roster ought to have AAA studios on high alert, especially after Larian and BG3 just handed them their asses. If you were to 'get the inside story' from these old guard devs, all their stories for leaving would have a single running thread: corporate interference make development untenable. I dearly want Exodus to succeed spectacularly.

    Yeah, I think we can call it now: it's gonna be a woke disaster.
    Bioware, WotC, 343, Naughty Dog, these are all woke companies.

    • @firescar2206
      @firescar2206 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The problem isn't being "woke", it's prioritizing profit over a quality product. Look at helldivers 2, rife with political subtext about the dangers of fascism that is hugely popular because it was put out in a finished state and the dev team has been very clear and open about what they're working on. The CEO has told people to wait to buy the game until server issues are fixed. Look at Baldurs gate 3, a finished game that won game of the year and has all kind of "woke" things. Every party member swings both ways, strong female characters, ect. Companies going "woke" is a function of capitalism, they've simply realized there's a huge market of people that would love to buy something that has representation of them in it.
