I’m a senior, here’s some of my problems driving: People riding bicycles in the dark at 4:30 am, no lights, no reflectors. Cars driving before dawn with their lights off. Super hyper bright headlights, they blind everything. This is safe? Red light runners. I was hit by one of these. Speeders. Cell phone users. Sudden lane changes, yep, one of these got me. This test doesn't seem to cover any of these problems.

We, like many cities have a homeless problem. More and more common is the person pushing their shopping cart down the center of the road in the middle of the night.
I too am a senior and live in Oakland, CA. We have an abundance of these drivers in our city. We also have a bumper crop of car breakins and catalytic converter thefts.
I'm 69 years old and I only got the railroad crossing sign question wrong. It wasn't on my written driver's test 50 years ago. Somehow I managed to avoid hitting a train or anything else.
I was the one hit by the train in some verdant terrain. It happens. The railroad companies always have the right of way. I have paid closer attention over the past 50 years to railroad crossings. I was distracted at the same time of my own crash by a local resident waving her arms feverously at me. I didn't understand what was really going on until the whistle blew, right before the the locomotive struck my WV bug on the right passenger side. Dragging me down the tracks some one hundred yards before hurtling my vehicle and I down an embankment and into a mobile home park. Where I proceeded to tear out a porch and patio of one of their residents. I almost made it across the tracks, and always have felt lucky to make it out with my life. Exactly 50 years ago.
For the past umpteen years The DMV has just sent me my renewed license in the mail....This birthday (74) I received a notice I would be required to take a written exam and eye exam....NO tickets, accidents or any driving violations........I guess its the $41.00 that they need
100% at age 73. Most of these questions are common sense. A few I best-guessed as I don’t live in CA and my state doesn’t have a senior test. IMO, the real danger is from younger people who are more apt to be texting while driving an older model car not equipped with hands free technology. Those of any age lacking in driving experience can also pose a hazard.
all that means is that you memorized the drivers hand book you have to to pass this test....good on you for getting 100% I'm 71 and missed the test 3 times ! not because I didn't know the answers but because the test was so screwed up some times the test questions are close but not accurate in the available answers...other times it is their all right but which is the "most right" and that kind of a test is not about knowledge it's about passing a stupid test !
Not just seniors. We have more real driving experience and actually shouldn't need to be tested as much. I believe that the age group that breaks the law the most and seems to not know the rules of driving correctly should be tested the most and those drivers are the ones under 25 years old!!
I’m a senior and had to take the written test at DMV because the online test wouldn’t download to my iPad. The test had very little to do with a regular driver on the road. Most of the questions were for truck drivers or something…even the lady who gave me the test said that was stupid. Thankfully I passed, but it was close. I’ve got a perfect driving record but am treated like I’m senile or something in California. Shameful….
You can take a written test at home? I’m turning 70 in a year, and I thought I had to go to dmv for testing. I didn’t realize there was a senior test or a home test. When does the senior/home test apply?
i studied for month for the written test, paid even a sure test to pass, failed, because of questions (like you said) truck, kids car seat, freeways, bikes, stuff that i never have to deal with, and it is horrible, but the worse is even when i read the dmv book the questions when i took the written test on the computer at dmv i flunked because on how they asked the questions and most of all the multiple choice the wording was so different i needed a vocabulary to understand what it means, this test here and other i did today the wording was if i was in outer space and it was like "what the f..???, so i flunked, iam having my eye surgery so i can pass the eye test, but the written test on the computer threw me off, than i by passed a couple of questions thinking i can go back to it and they assumed it was a fail so i did not pass, needless to say i was angry and did not go back to try again, i never been in the snow, i do not know any thing about trucks why ask this type of question in california to sr's? child seats" give me a break!!
Seniors are not the problem compared to drivers 25 and under. They don't drive as fast and do not do drugs or alcohol like younger people. Govt has done this to your thinking.
Used to think that, but was almost hit inside a Post Office because a senior citizen (80+) mistook the brake pedal for the gas. Drove straight thru the double glass doors at the front of the building, missing me and another person by inches, (but scared the crap out of all of us). Seniors need to be checked.

If you walk behind your car to make sure there are no children there and then get in your car to back out, this is no guarantee that a child is not there now as 15-30 seconds has passed.
That is why beeping your horn as you start to back up, after checking the rear of your car, is a good idea. That's why commercial vehicles make sounds when backing up.
I don't live in Cal. but the fact that seniors are targeted like this is no more than age discrimination. There are no statistics to say seniors have any more accidents than the young, it actually is more teens and new drivers.and distraction is the biggest cause, Seniors, are not the population glued to their blasted cell phones!
Here's an interesting stat for you. For younger people from 15 to 19 years old the type of issues that causes deaths for young people. Vehicle accidents causes 33 percent of their deaths.
My father was not doing well and should not have been driving due to arthritis. My sister said he was fine! One day her son and my nephew that were teens were in his car and he froze at a major intersection! A nurse behind him in traffic checked on him and had him move over and she drove him to my sister's home and her daughter drove her car. Both my nephews had permits but were so scared to drive! My father said he just froze and forgot what to do! A couple months later my mother pointed to a hotel near that same intersection and she commented that they are so nice at that place! Apparently they stayed there because they got lost! They lived 1 mile away! She never said how many nights they stayed there and to be honest I still freak out each time I think of it! A fellow employee said they worked as a front desk person at a major hotel chain and they have a whole training about seniors. They get lost locals all of the time! Being older now I realize that driving is a privilege! Thank God for home deliveries and senior ride services. It's sad when things we take for granted are now getting harder and harder! Getting old is for the birds!
Thank you for sharing this personal story. It highlights the importance of continuously evaluating our loved ones' capabilities to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road. Aging can bring about many unforeseen challenges, and driving is certainly one of those privileges that may need to be reevaluated as time goes on. It's heartwarming to know that there are kind-hearted people like the nurse who helped your father and establishments trained to assist seniors in distress. We should all be proactive and compassionate, understanding that someday we may be in their shoes. Let's be thankful for the conveniences and services available today that can help seniors maintain their independence while prioritizing safety. 🙏🚗💕

Went to the Ca DMV to renew my CDL, passed and three weeks later DMV "mailed" a new card. At five weeks-- no card. Had to go to DMV to spend three more hours and start the process over again except no $$ this time. Complained that an important document like a CDL should at minimum be tracable: "oh we mail out millions so no-can-do"; with all the $$$ the DMV sucks-up they could hire a private delivery service to make secure deliveries. Likely someone has snatched my CDL ID and it is now in use by some border jumper leading to more disruptions in my future.. THANKS CA DMV.
Did you have to take the test again?? Their mistake or the postal service. Their should be a record of your test results. I guess I'll ask for a copy when I go in the next month or so. 😮
DMV's questions have reached a level of trickery which is more about comprehension then it is about safe driving. I passed the test but I failed the first attempt, I'm 74 years old with a perfect driving record of 55 years. The part I don't get is they charge you again if you fail 3 times. Why do they charge you again? Rip off. Los Angeles
I just renewed at 69. I didn't have to take a written test, just a vision test. The vision test was absurd, with really tiny letters, much smaller than signage, but I passed. Your right about these questions, they are very poorly written. Next time I renew, I will review beforehand, because there are a few I would have gotten wrong. Like about the blind pedestrian. I'm certainly not going to run someone over just because they don't have a guide dog, and just have a cane.
It's not the seniors I'd be testing but all! Now that pot is a free for all, every one who has a drivers license insured or not (most driving with no insurance and expired tags) should be tested in person!
Testing everyone is a waste of time. What is the point of testing someone who has driven for years without incident? Obviously they know how to drive safely. You can be a safe driver without knowing every obscure rule in the book, people have enough stress in their lives they don't the additional stress of studying the drivers manual. I would only test those who had alot of tickets/accidents and seniors showing obvious signs of dementia. Now I don't have a problem with requiring people over 75 to provide proof of a doctors visit within the last few years where they were evaluated for dementia and if the doctor thought they had dementia then they have to take the written test. If a dementia test is required then there needs to be a clear definition of what dementia is. I'm a really shy man and I'd worry that someone would think that because I didn't talk very much I must be stupid/demented but if you put a logic test in front of me I'd ace it.
DId you do this at home on your computer? If so, how restrictive was the head movement by the camera? Any suggestions to make this as easy for my older Mom?
I appreciate your efforts trying to help us Seniors. I just applied for my renewal DL test this morning . I have been reviewing ... youtube 6 videos .. test for Seniors. Also another video .. supposedly from DMV .. that they are showing consideration to the Seniors .. that there is A Senior test with only 18 questions. I reviewed these Senior Test 6 of them. And when I was at DMV this morning ... they told me .. NOT TRUE FALSE INFORMATION. The test are by random. NO SPECIAL SENIOR TEST .. . I failed it this morning. I saw some questions at DMV test ... that didn't appear in these .. so called Senior Test. I was very very dissapointed . So I learned a lesson ... STUDY THE HANDBOOK. And that's what I'm going to do. Thankfully , I had an extension and another chance for test. Or just ... don't review .. so called .. DMV Senior Test. View others .. that are current .. 2023 ,. But I appreciate your efforts. New law in California ... over 70 yrs old .. in person DMV office ... vision and written test .. $41.00 3 tries.
Well I failed twice now so I have now paid $123 so I could get an extension. Silly me, studied questions online for weeks. None were on the tests. DMV worker said study the book only. These are the days I hate California for all their stupid rules.
I believe the answer to the Rail Road Crossing sign is incorrect in the video. THIS SIGN THAT IS SHOWN NEVER indicates the direction that the tracks cross the highway! Rail Road Signs are universal across the USA and DO NOT indicate at which angle the tracks cross the roadway. They only tell the driver that tracks are present! There are other yellow signs that may show tracks crossing at an angle, but the sign shown in the test video is definitely not designed to do that. It merely indicates that it is a Rail Road Crossing.
Maybe the meaning is that a railroad track crosses ahead on the road you’re driving on? I’ve never seen a railroad sign that indicates the actual angle of the tracks in relation to the road.
The test has the wrong sign, the sign is yellow not the old fashion X crossing sign The following is from the Federal Highway Administration Section 8B.19 Skewed Crossing Sign (W10-12) Option: The Skewed Crossing (W10-12) sign (see Figure 8B-5) may be used at a skewed highway-rail grade crossing to warn drivers that the railroad tracks are not perpendicular to the highway. Guidance: If the Skewed Crossing sign is used, the symbol should show the direction of the crossing (near left to far right as shown in Figure 8B-5, or the mirror image if the track goes from far left to near right). If the Skewed Crossing sign is used where the angle of the crossing is significantly different than 45 degrees, the symbol should show the appropriate angle of the crossing.
This comes from the tyranny of a full-time California state legislature. Actuary wise, there's no solid evidence that seniors are responsible for a greater number of auto accidents than any others. I was an auto liability claims adjuster in California for close to 30 years and never experienced a disproportionate number of claims involving senior drivers. California drivers with vision impairments often have to renew their license by taking a driver's road test every two years. So, while taking that every two years special vision test you could fail that test because you did not signal or change lanes properly, which has nothing to do with your vision, and lose your driver's license.
Where we lack in eyesight and reflex our experience has reenforced with abundant caution. Also this senior is not obligated to be on the road to support the household. I was far more prone to make mistakes in my more vigorous youth. I was just sent notice of my own renewal and am about to go online to take the test and pay the required 49 dollars. It has been quite a while since requiring anything more than a fee. I am more concerned with some form of driving test or the vision test. This seems relatively painless. Thanks for your support of seniors.

I take issue with question #5, the question doesn't match what is in the real world in California. Many of the these signs only let you know there are train tracks and NOT the angle of how the tracks intersect the roadway that is fact!
true. I take exception to having to take a test how ever unfair it is, when you have to drive to survive. I didn’t know ( but correctly guessed some) of the California specific questions. The animal crossing one (#1) - answers b&w were the same just worded differently. Got the others right lol cause I’ve driven for 50 years 😂.
Yes. The way they word some questions at times can be tricky. They need stay on track per the DMV booklet and not thinking of creative ways to reword it so the answers choices become tricky.
I was so worried my eyes would not pass the in-person renewal; I don't often worry but it was a big load off my back. One of the things many hate to surrender is driving, I did a road trip a couple months ago, first in years, hard as Hell on my bones but I loved the drive, Willie sang it best.

The Railroad Crossing Sign, also known as a crossbuck sign, is a white, X-shaped sign with the words RAILROAD CROSSING printed on it, typically installed at at-grade intersections of railways and roads. Its purpose is to alert drivers and pedestrians to the presence of a railroad crossing, encouraging them to exercise caution and be prepared to stop if a train is approaching.
Are these questions only used for seniors? If so, why does CA think there needs to be a different test for seniors? Are they testing a senior’s mental capacity to drive by memorizing the correct response? Are these questions clearly explained in the CA driver’s manual?
Are these questions only used for seniors? No, the same is used for new permits. Seniors' papers are called renewal test For more info check www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/special-interest-driver-guides/senior-drivers/

TEST title should say it is CALIFORNIA Test, Not universal: @4:51, In my state the Light must be visible for 50 feet. Front & Rear Reflectors. Most bikes sold do not have fenders, "It is the Thing" these days. And buyers don't car. Also Bikes Must (by law) travel With Traffic to the side of a traffic lane, yet riding on sidewalks, crosswalks, and against traffic is common. @6:29, In my state It is 'approaching a Crosswalk'' OFTEN at a School Zone, too. Some of these are Tricky, My car will not allow starting without holding Brake Pedal, It BEEPS loudly as an alert if anything is behind (camera), it even stops when objects are too close as well as as alerts (beeps) showing all around the car on screen, and points to where the object is. Cannot open doors if traffic is moving too close. (Child/passenger Safety) @8:15, with the Blinkers on, a camera lights up the side on the dash, and may sound an Alarm. Note: Blinkers ON. In olden days Standing on the Brake pedal stopped a vehicle, Now with ABS pumping may not stop the vehicle, and even with ABS the vehicle may not stop in the least possible space.
What state makes seniors take a written test to renew their license? Also, the test needs to be specific for each individual state. The rules of road can differ between states.
I've been driving in CA for 50 years and grew up in dad's gas station where driving just about dominated life. There's more laws than ever today. It truly isn't this complex imo.
Today I went to AAA paid my car insurance and my car tags. I live in California where it is expensive I ask they had a book for senior citizens to renew their license. She said no but I would have to go on the DMV website yeah but they want to charge you.
I think there are some seniors that do need recertification in order to be either a safe driver or possibly a former driver. Also when I get to that point where I can no longer be a safe driver and I don’t have the facilities to realize that there must me a path for the state to take me off the road. My father a former police officer at 80 years old told us he was going to drive anymore as he realized he wasn’t able to anymore, but I saw his friend in the same age group refuse to follow and that happens too often.
I knew a 91 year old lawyer who took turns car pooling people he worked with into downtown Los Angeles. The DMV tried to take away his licence because of age - only. He took them to court and won. Now the California DMV have to judge the individual's cognitive ability instead of an arbitrary age. If your father's friends did not have the loss your father had then anyone condemning them for driving is simply uninformed or prejudice. Remember they once did not let blacks or women fly military aircraft as it was assumed such was beyond their ability.
It takes an aware individual to realize that their reaction time and cognitive abilities are not what they once were and personally give up driving so that they do not hurt someone. I had a neighbor who did this and was sad for his loss of freedom but he started to take the bus and adapted. Another neighbor put his foot on the gas instead of the brakes in a parking lot and smashed directly into another car, totaling both of them. If someone had been in front of him loading groceries there would have been a human tragedy.
A Class C (commercial) driver's license is ONLY need IF you are transporting persons or property for hire per CA Veh C section 15210(a). A California citizen per CA Gov C section 241(a) is not a California resident per CA Veh C section 516. “Resident” means any person who manifests an intent to live or be located in this state on more than a temporary or transient basis. Presence in the state for six months or more in any 12-month period gives rise to a rebuttable presumption of residency.
You are right. Wisconsin does not require re-testing based on age alone. Drivers age 60 and over must visit a DMV every eight years to renew their driver license. DMV staff has a responsibility to determine whether the functional ability of a customer may interfere with their ability to exercise ordinary and reasonable control in the operation of a motor vehicle. If there is a concern, staff may request additional tests or obtain a medical report.
California! You know, it’s the state where lots of substances are hazardous or deadly, but become benign by simply crossing into Nevada! It’s the same with driving.

Absolutely! The rules and penalties vary wildly from state to state,or province etc. And railroad signs don’t show the angle of the crossing, the angles of crossings vary and the signs don’t, so I have no idea where you got that answer.
At least most of us senior drivers aren't texting, are keeping our eyes and minds on the road and on our driving, so we aren't as apt to have the slower reaction time of an idiot who's just got to find out where the "hottest" event is going on so he can get there NOW!
His answer is incorrect. Those criss-cross signs NEVER indicate the angle of the tracks. They are all exactly the same at every crossing, but are rarely even used these days.

been driving in calif for 49 years and this test i have taken i think 7 times for big rigs and motorcycles and autos, it is a joke, i mean they do have crazy trick questions, why ???
I believe the concern is that a loose animal running in traffic can cause a car crash; some over zealous non-thinking animal lover will swerve at all costs to miss an animal and several times I have read about this causing serious traffic accidents and deaths.
Simple solution, since the gov thinks we the elderly are a hazzard on the road. I pose we all change our license to include motorcycle, then we can do so many fun things, make left turns from the right turn lane or make right turn flip a bitch and then another right or even make a right turn from the left turn lane. Not to even mention flying between cars going 30-70 at 80 to 100. How about fix your bikes before coming after us
So many of these questions have nothing to do with evaluating a persons ability to drive safely. Procession window stickers? Angle of train tracks? Etc
Some of the answers are wrong. Most are insulting. Seniors???? These are questions to ask ALL ages of drivers. What age is considered a Senior? These questions should be for ALL teens.

Seems like we seniors have an advantage to having common sense.
all that means is that you memorized the drivers hand book you have to to pass this test....good on you for getting 100% I'm 71 and missed the test 3 times !
not because I didn't know the answers but because the test was so screwed up
some times the test questions are close but not accurate in the available answers...other times it is their all right but which is the "most right" and that kind of a test is not about knowledge it's about passing a stupid test !
@@bobkelly2447lol. You're absolutely right!
Sounds like these questions would more apply to the newer drivers who seem to lack understanding of these.
I don't see anything that is specific to older drivers.
Yes.really, if anything every age that legally drives needs to be tested more often!!
I think it has to be on a pc or other computer. I wanted to take it also on my ipad and it wasn’t listed that I could.
Seniors are not the problem compared to drivers 25 and under. They don't drive as fast and do not do drugs or alcohol like younger people. Govt has done this to your thinking.
No, our senses dull. Sorry, but we need to be checked.
Used to think that, but was almost hit inside a Post Office because a senior citizen (80+) mistook the brake pedal for the gas. If you walk behind your car to make sure there are no children there and then get in your car to back out, this is no guarantee that a child is not there now as 15-30 seconds has passed.

Yes it is about MONEY, if I fail my 3rd time, I have to pay41$ again
One of my driving pet peeve's are people who drive onto a freeway at 40 mph and never increase their speed...

Thanks for the info!
Maybe the meaning is that a railroad track crosses ahead on the road you’re driving on?
I’ve never seen a railroad sign that indicates the actual angle of the tracks in relation to the road.
The test has the wrong sign, the sign is yellow not the old fashion X crossing sign
The following is from the Federal Highway Administration
Section 8B.19 Skewed Crossing Sign (W10-12)
Option:
The Skewed Crossing (W10-12) sign (see Figure 8B-5) may be used at a skewed highway-rail grade crossing to warn drivers that the railroad tracks are not perpendicular to the highway.
Guidance:
If the Skewed Crossing sign is used, the symbol should show the direction of the crossing (near left to far right as shown in Figure 8B-5, or the mirror image if the track goes from far left to near right).

Ty so much!

I would not leave my cottage near the sea for a million dollars , Love where I live , no one leaves over little dilemmas , it takes bigger reasons ..
The real problem the eyes send a message to the brain the brain send a message to the legs.the biggest problem is the reaction time of an older person
At least most of us senior drivers aren't texting, are keeping our eyes and minds on the road and on our driving, so we aren't as apt to have the slower reaction time of an idiot who's just got to find out where the "hottest" event is going on so he can get there NOW!
answer to question number 5 is incorrect
0:04 And now "Let's Get Stated"?
I guess the DMV didn't bother to proof read their video.
I'm not able to confirm that the answer to question 5 is correct. Can someone help with this? Thank you.
His answer is incorrect.
Those criss-cross signs NEVER indicate the angle of the tracks. They are all exactly the same at every crossing, but are rarely even used these days.
You have made these for Seniors.? They would have to be pretty dim to not pass. We know the answers because we’ve been driving awhile.
You'll be surprised as how some people can overthink a question and then they become confused.
how many sides does a sign have ???? will count next time as I get into an accident😛😀some very pathetic
in the DMV one time filling out paper work and this older gentleman had the test and was asking me for answers😅😃😄told him you don't want to ask me ,to funny
@@kipincharge2833In NC they just show the sign shape & color as you’d see it then ask what it is. Much more sensible.
At time t = 0:04... "Let's get stated !" ... what ?
Typo- who created this site???
been driving in calif for 49 years and this test i have taken i think 7 times for big rigs and motorcycles and autos, it is a joke, i mean they do have crazy trick questions, why ???
Myrtice Rapid
0:04~ Let's get stated?
WTF does animal dumping have to do with being a good driver, DMV is a joke.
What did you expect from a California govt department? Common sense?
It’s a moral offense only in California.
I pose we all change our license to include motorcycle, then we can do
so many fun things, make left turns from the right turn lane or make right turn flip a bitch and then another right or even make a right
turn from the left turn lane. Not to even mention flying between cars going 30-70 at 80 to 100. How about fix your bikes before coming after us
So many of these questions have nothing to do with evaluating a persons ability to drive safely.
Procession window stickers?
Angle of train tracks?
Etc
Age discrimination!🤣
I’m surprised no one has instigated a discrimination suit.
Some of the answers are wrong. Most are insulting. Seniors???? These are questions to ask ALL ages of drivers. What age is considered a Senior? These questions should be for ALL teens.
58yrs old had multiple strokes brain damage and got all of them 😂😂😂maybe I should move to California oh I turn down the radio so I can see better 😂😂😂
DMV has several tests that they use.
Windshield markers? What are they talking about? Never owned a vehicle with anything other than windshield wipers. Markers are lights or reflectors.
In England, your windshield is referred to as a windscreen...
@@tommybotts Windscreen is used here also. But, I am pretty sure that Windshield Markers is not a term used anywhere.
Perhaps if someone were talking about pens that you could use to write on your windshield, but nothing to do driving.
I got 12/25!
That's why I stay in my basement all day
How u suppose to log answers?
