- Today we revisit a topic we first introduced in 2019, which explains the Benefits of the Horizontal Layens hive. We wanted to remake this video because we love this hive system and wanted to share our experience with it over the last five years.

Got a layens hive from a friend. In the process of moving bees from a langstroth hive so I modified some equipment to fit layens frames. When they get enough wax built on the layens frames I’ll move them. Should give them plenty of time to prepare for winter.
That's awesome. I've never done a Langstroth to Layens transition but I know many who have. Let us know how they do!
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees I’ll be documenting the process. Got my hands on one of dr Leo’s hives. Bees are currently building wax on the layens frame. I’ve started a layens playlist on my channel
Best move i ever made going from langstroff to topbar hive. Would like a laynes hive but dont know if i can handle the weight. Age and health are not in my favor right now. Love the video

I would put vent in bottom and close off upper vent, bees need heat bubble in winter to create condensation to drink water, when they lose heat they have to work harder and so they eat more honey to do so, luv the layens , I have ten!
Layens is great, I might still add a bottom ventilation before a colony moves in.

16:13 9:08 I see previous wax moth larvae paths on the back wall. Saw this in my hive that didn't make it. We had cocoons in each indention. It was nasty. :) Can't believe how much they chew wood.
This colony left sometime last year and the wax moths had a field day, there were cocoons everywhere including on the frames if you look closely. It is pretty amazing what they can do to wood in just a few months.
Do you have any experience with the plywood/insulated Layens hive? Just curious if you have and what you thought of them.
I've never used a plywood insulated Layens hive but to my understanding it's some of the best insulation you can find. I would say it's better than the 2x lumber we use, but it is probably a little more time consuming in construction which is why we use what you see in this video.
Give it a try, I don't think you'll find better insulation anywhere else!
I would say another con is that the layens hive isn't as popular so you either have to build your own hive and frames or find someone who can and that's not cheap.
That's a great point, the Langstroth is certainly more affordable. Layens can be expensive but if you go to "HorrizontalHive.com" you can get some some nice Layens hives from Dr. Leo for cheaper cost, he also includes Layens frames with his hives at a great value.
On 3:19 you mentioned 'it doesn't look like it's knocked over'.
Knocked over by wind/animals or vandalism?
Wild animals mostly, there really aren't very many people that hang around this land.
