Long time ago I had a cat, Mats, and like a dog he followed me everywhere. If I went for a burger, he went with me inside the burger joint (allowed in The Netherlands!) and we shared a burger, or I gave him little pieces. One day he was missing. I looked for him everywhere but could not find him. After about a week I walked in the neighbourhood where the burger place was. A girl that worked there came outside and asked: Sir, that Tuxedo cat, he's yours, isn't he? Yeah! I said. Well, she anwsered, A week ago he sorta moved in here. He refuses to leave. We try to get him out by giving him burgers, but the more we gave him, the more convinced he was he'd gonna stay! 😂😂🍔🍔 So long, Mats, you were the best! Edit: For everyone who thought I left him behind, a big NO! Of course he went home with me. He was a very adventurous cat. He always pulled stunts like that. This was in the late eighties, early nineties. He died at the glorious age of 18. He's always been with me, well, if he wasn't on one of his many adventures. He had a beautiful life, and he was my friend. That's what I meant at the end, not leaving him at the hamburger bar.
Wow. I don't know how you could get an animal, form a bond, then let it go and live there with strangers forever... and even though I want to think of this as a cute story, I just hope that he's taken care of the rest of his life and not just doomed to roam the planet. Domesticated pets are domesticated, people let their bunnies go, cats, dogs, they end up as strays, get hit by cars, don't get proper medical attention (even if they get burgers). Let's hope his new owners loved him more than you did.
LOL this is so funny! It reminds me of my old cat (Spyder RIP my buddy) when I fed him some sliced chicken once from the refrigerator. It was fun to tease him and fun to watch him get riled up.
An interesting fact is that cats can't taste sweetness, they don't have receptors for it on their tongues. That means these cats are purely in it for the creaminess.
I also know that study. And i know a lot of cats (including mine) who are crazy about anything sweet. So either the cats don't know they can't taste it (because they can't read the study anyways)... or the study must simply be wrong.
GrafKrolock82 From a biological standpoint, we know what specific taste receptors look like, so my guess is the scientists who did the study didn't see such receptors in cats. But they MUST be tasting it somehow, because mine go bananas for straight sugar, like simple syrup. Maybe they can smell it, even if they can't directly taste it?
No, the defective gene in the taste bud is all mapped out and they know beyond any doubt that it doesn't function. Goes for the entire cat family, big and little. Explains a lot about their diet and behavior. But like you guys say, it doesn't explain why some of them do seem interested in sweet stuff.
gerald zuckier I still think it's a smell thing. Smell has a huge impact on taste, and they certainly can sniff out the yummy stuff in sugar, so why not want to nom on it?
