  • Ruling on celebrating Christmas in Islam
    the introduction
Christmas is a holiday celebrated by Christians on December 25 of each year, and it commemorates the birth of Christ, peace be upon him. This holiday is one of the most important Christian holidays, and is celebrated all over the world.
Ruling on celebrating Christmas in Islam
The majority of jurists have held that celebrating Christmas is forbidden for Muslims, for reasons including:
Christmas is a Christian holiday, and celebrating it is one of the rituals of disbelief, and God Almighty has forbidden imitating the infidels in their rituals.
Celebrating Christmas requires recognizing the birth of Christ, peace be upon him, as God or Son of God, and this contradicts the doctrine of Islam, which affirms that God Almighty is one and has no partner, and that Christ, peace be upon him, is a servant and a prophet.
Evidence of the prohibition of celebrating Christmas
There is a lot of evidence from the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet regarding the prohibition of celebrating Christmas, including:
God Almighty says: {And do not follow their desires away from the truth that has come to you} [Al-Ma’idah: 48].
God Almighty says: {And do not be like those who were given the Scripture before; a time was prolonged for them, so their hearts hardened} [Al-Hadid: 16].
On the authority of Ibn Omar, may God be pleased with them both, he said: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them” [Narrated by Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi].
    Exceptions to the prohibition rule
There are some exceptions to the ruling prohibiting celebrating Christmas, including:
If celebrating Christmas is a matter of courtesy or acquaintance, and does not entail any religious obligations, then there is nothing wrong with it.
If celebrating Christmas is for relaxation and a good time, and does not entail any religious obligations, then there is nothing wrong with it.
