I really like this show. Theres only one main issue i have with it. Its a bit similar to a completely different anime called "how heavy are the dumbbells you lift?" In which its a short anime, but its enjoyable. I think its safe to have hanako as my favorite, but theres not even enough development for the main trio. However i do like the show, like chainsaw man, it doesnt have enough to show for, for it to make its way into my top 10, but maybe lower 5 or top 15 in this case.
Thats why the anime did the story so dirty. Sorry for the long paragraph in advance! Those manga's are nothing alike. Luckily the anime is getting a reboot! The main trio gets development throughout the manga series and you get a deep dive into their personal feelings and struggles. However, the amines rearrangement and cuts for time were so bad that it skipped Kou's development arc and internal struggles of feeling insignificant and weak (Young Exorcist arc), Nene's struggle of whether to (spoilers) fight to live or let her lifespan deplete and her conflicting feelings of Hanako's actions, and Hanako's internal battle, which the anime did the most showing out of the three, however not enough. Young exorcist arc for example shows Hanako and his outlook on the living world, regrets, and mental anguish. How "death isnt atoning", and his pleads for forgiveness from the world and people around him, while also closing his feelings in, only coming out in unhinged episodes of detachment. Later in the series, his blatant switch in behaviors and controlling attitude are shown in a mysterious, understandable, yet immoral ways. He wants to keep Yashiro alive, give her life by his "own hand" and for him to be the one to save her, even if that means the death of her best friend. Sure the anime was comedic, and so is the manga, however the anime completely removed the depressing and haunting side of the story, replacing it with mostly comedy and some of the dark stuff. It also barely touched on Tsukasa and his disregard of living things and their feelings (other than Mitsuba) (Example that was left out of the anime: Stabbing the talking blowfish open with a pencil to "see the insides" of him because he was "curious") Each school mystery is even well developed. Their feelings, fears, and outlook. Even Aoi has her own conflicts and development! Not to mention the manga's use of "flower language" to represent characters and even book volumes tones (vol 15 & 18 for example. The type of flowers on the covers represent the feelings and tone of the contents of the specific volume) The story is unbelievably dark and stomach twisting at times. Hanako is my #1 favorite manga of all time, I hope you give it a second chance and read the manga. The anime is so hard to watch after reading due to its blatant sabotage of the series.

For instance, Kou was pretending he needed help making donuts as a way to connect with Yashiro and knew she wanted to make donuts for Hanako. His brother had nothing to do with the donuts, except to interfere.
