Love It CVVCLIPS Bro
What makes a 5 star match for Meltzer?
1. Has Omega or the Young Bucks in it.
2. Takes place in Japan
3. Under no circumstances takes place in the WWE.
Well, #3 is not true. He's given WWE on the main roster 3 5 star matches in the last year.
Lol and as we have seen the past year, doesnt have cm punk in it. No way punk vs Joe was only 3.75 lol
The bucks are barely on tv
@@Kratosx23he’s also given AJPW WOMEN which has been defunct for almost 20 years more than WWE HAS HAD EVER 🤣🤣
lets not pretend he isnt ridiculously bias against WWE
But he gave WWE many 5 star matches last year ........
I love how CVV is grilling him in the kindest and most logical way. Great job.
@@geekmac9349 No, that doesn't sound crazy to me. I like that style of wrestling too. I just said I liked how CVV is interviewing him. I complimented CVV for the way he does his job. I didn't insult Dave. I'm not sure what triggered you.

Dave Meltzer tiptoeing around discussing Kurt f'n Angle was priceless. Chris Van Vliet deserves a title for that.
Good on Chris for calling out this mush-mouth.
what makes a 5 star match: (for newbies)
1. set the match at tokyodome, Japan
2. wrestlers must be 230lbs, the lighter the wrestler, the more workrate driven the performer is.
3. set the match for 45-120 mins max.
4. 1 superkick is equals to .75 star, do more and hard leg slaps are necessary for the so called "believability"
5. perform at least 3-5 canadian destoryers, in a top rope or high risk angle, thats a plus 1
6. don't sell the move and treat it as a anime drunk fight
7. do flips in one sequence.
8. no punches, do elbow smashes more often
9. perform at least 10 - 20 false finishes for a gripping feel of a match.
10. LASTLY, BE ELITE.
Gunther? Misawa? Manami Toyota? Bret Hart? Not every 5 star wrestler fits these criteria.
@@duckmercy11 because they’re different at least their matches are tolerable than those guys who flips and kicks and performs a thousand false finishes.

@timslee0618 yet he criticizes others on their promos
@timslee0618 No, it's not. A guy who can't talk shouldn't criticize others who can.
I love how Chris isn’t letting this go. Meltzer I respect as a journalist to a degree, but his star ratings are ridiculous. Rey Mysterio, Eddie, HHH, Angle, Rock and so many others have put on classics beyond a small range of what makes wrestling amazing and yet one dudes take is the most praised? People do need to just understand quality is what you make it. Not a reviewer.
Well said
I dont feel like that's Meltzer's fault. its his opinion and people put it on a pedastal for whatever reason. he has no control over that. I dont get why people want him to be objective when reviewing a creative medium, it just isnt possible. A film critic you respect might give a movie you like a bad review. doesnt mean its officially bad just means that critic didnt like it. The problem is a lot other news outlets seem to look to Dave rather than make their own ratings so a consensus isnt reached.
@@DoctorMooCowoh yes, I'm sure he begs people to not take him seriously
@@DoctorMooCow
The problem with Dave unfortunately is the level of influence he has in the common view. For example if a wrestling museum would to open up, and he has a level of influence for matches to be showcased, and unfortunately with this it’s going to be a vast majority of Omega or Osprey matches which does hinder a casual opinion. That’s where I get the frustration with Dave. I would showcase HBk vs Taker at 25 over Omega for a museum viewing audience, but unfortunately Dave influence and opinions would be used sway those matches away from ever being properly honored.

Spots, dives, & kick outs.
And what do WWE matches have to be better than that?
It is fantastic. I hear Chris asking accurate questions, and I hear Meltzer just talking for the sake of talking. We all know this man has no fixed rules for his ratings, we know he has favorite wrestlers and we know he has a grudge against WWE. It is okay to have an opinion, I won't deny that, as much as it is okay to give that opinion online. However, when you are that biased, it is hard to take you seriously.
Meltzer is lucky to have been the first one to do what he does, this is why people think he is legit. Be your own judge and don't follow this. Enjoy what you want and don't be "I love this match because this person gave it 6*" or "I hate this match because that person gave it 2*". Have your own critical mind 🙃
And that's the word here I think, "Legit". I think the last person who thinks that their opinions are legit is Dave. His responses here are long winded, but sum up to "it's what I thought at the time, I thought they were important and took risks." He even acknowledges he doesn't go back and change ratings, he knows he hands ratings out arbitrarily and are more reactionary than based on guidelines. I'd say they're based on feelings, emotional reactions, the climaxes that build not in the weeks running up to the match, but from the match itself. Wrestling is Performance Art, and how Dave responds to it emotionally is how he rates matches. Different cultures do wrestling differently and I think Dave prefers the Japanese style. I'm sure many of us in an English comment section probably prefer American wrestling and it's different structure. I'm sure most wrestling fans in the US care little for names like Kobashi, Kawada, or Misawa, and if Dave never gave them 5 stars, nobody in the US would even notice. Dave is only one voice in wrestling, and if you know his preferences, you know what his ratings mean. I think he's a critic with a preference, like a video game critic who likes RPG's, or a movie critic who loves horror. He's a wrestling critic who like Japanese Wrestling. The amount of people who comment how much they dislike his opinions does a lot to show how much of an impact they have on wrestling fans, and just like a wrestler who gets booed, any reaction is a good reaction as long as it's loud :]
It is just a man’s opinions, find something meaningful in your life
This guy was the kid in high school who took write a 1000 word essay to heart and never stopped in his chosen profession. He's like that Fred armisen character on snl talking for the sake of it but never getting to the point.
1. At least 3 table spots
2. The wrestlers need to immediatly start no selling every move they took in the last 30 minutes and start running and doing a flip
3. At least one Japanese wrestler / EVP has to be involved
4. They need to do at least 5 canadian destroyers, kick out, then end the match with a random submission
So Dave admits that CMLL is his favourite style of wrestling, yet he's given them zero 5 stars. He prefers CMLL to Kenny Omega and the Bucks, so he basically just outright admitted that he likes their matches less than CMLL, which means he just said, without directly saying it, that they get constant 5 star matches because they're his friends. I also laughed at "Maybe Kurt Angle didn't have the perfect opponent", lol. Yes, Benoit wasn't the perfect opponent for Angle, lol. the Angle/Benoit match is better than his 7 star Omega/Okada by a lot.
I remember watching Kurt vs HBK at WM as a young kid and thinking it was unlike any match I’d ever seen. It was special. Both of those guys arguably at their peak and they absolutely put on a clinic.
It’s all bullshit and means nothing. Still it’s fun to listen to him attempt to justify his ratings.
Kenny Omega has more five star matches than Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and the Undertaker combined.

Dave loves the Indy/Japanese style matches. That’s all! It’s like a person who loves a certain flavor of ice cream. He doesn’t hate other ice cream, he just prefers a certain flavor. If you like Dave’s ratings fine, if you don’t like them, that’s fine. Just use your own opinion. I watch WWE, AEW,Impact, NJPW etc. I use to watch WWF, NWA and AJPW back in the 80’s and 90’s. Just enjoy the athletes.
so why even rate matches in the USA with WWE
If Dave would admit that instead of pretending that he's objective, there wouldn't be a problem. Also, there's a bunch of idiots in the business who care more aboutkpleasing him than properly working a live crowd.
But he says he likes a certain ice cream but for some reason even tho it's his flavor of ice cream he still won't give em 5 starts for some reason the take risk why better then all aew tlc ecw the elite aren't that amazing but that ice cream can do no wrong aew gets five starts cuz that's his friends
How Dave Meltzer became the premiere journalist in pro wrestling baffles me.
Premier “journalist” only to AEW Marks
I appreciate Dave clearing things up and unequivocally demonstrating what we've all suspected which is that his rating system makes no sense.
CVV you asked the question that everybody wanted to ask to Dave.....didn't you watched TNA back in the day?? the 2000's were amazing
“Not injury risks” lol ok Dave.
Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat was most definitely a 5 star match.
7 minutes and still no clear explanation. If you're all hot and bothered about his ratings, then just ignore him. I don't even know how to keep up with his ratings unless someone is complaining on Twitter.
Any EVP against a Japanese dude.
The Kenny Omega/NJPW glazing is crazy
I love how Chris asked the questions that I think we've all wondered about regarding Dave Meltzer and his star ratings. I also love how Chris's otaku and fanboy side came out (which I also have from the TNA era). It's the first time I remember seeing Chris get emotional and defensive in the sense that he's offended by the star rating system, especially regarding all the great content from TNA. I'm from Mexico, and access to American wrestling was only through cable (there was no internet or videotapes). There was only one channel, 52MX, which over the years first aired Raw, then after several years, switched to SmackDown, and then to TNA (I also remember a special broadcast of an NJPW event featuring Nakamura and Prince David, the first time in my life seeing puroresu).
The TNA era reinforced my love for wrestling. I remember watching Lethal Lockdown, Sting, Samoa Joe, Kurt Angle, the matches at Destination X were incredible, and all the cruiserweight talent they had, Motor City, Sonjay, AJ, Chri, Creed, Black Machismo! They had some crazy matches! I was also offended, so thanks Chris for expressing that for all of us!

Kurt Angle never had the correct opponent. However, shingo takagi and andrade did LOLOLOLOLOL
Meltzer was never a WWF/WWE fan. He clearly was always a fan of the alternatives. I joined the most popular wrestling message boards and followed the dirt sheets in 2002. This was 22 years ago and during that decade and onward, it was so apparent that Meltzer is biased. The crazy thing is these communities were overtaken by Meltzer-minded fans back in those days but I love that these communities are now overtaken by actual fans than Meltzer-conditioned smarks. This man is toxic asf. Meltzer should be disregarded by all in wrestling and the wrestling media.
So he gets off on people risking their lives for something that is not legitimate sports competition? I mean even if it was, that's sick.

new japan is overrated.
roh deserves all the 5 star in the world. 2013 to 2019 had been some of the best wreslting ever.
By Dave's "standards" and "definition" of what a 5 star match is, every Roman Reigns match of the last 18 months shouldve been a 5 star, and especially all of them since like September. Every one of them hit Dave's "criteria" in terms of style, pace, build, and climax. So dont act like he actually has some formula or actual criteria
It's whatever hits the dopamine and serotonin centers of his autism riddled head.
The thing is Roman isn't Dave's friend, so he won't get a five star rating no matter what great work Roman has produced.

Dave's opinion only has as much merit as your willing to concede to it.
To my knowledge, Dave has never claimed that his star ratings are meant to be anything other than his opinion as a critic. There are critics for everything, and sometimes their opinions can be helpful, but personally, I'm not going to a certain restaurant based on the opinion of a food critic. I found his ratings to be very helpful in determining which matches are great in the style(s) that Dave likes, but I'm also plugged-in enough to recognize that Dave is never gonna like the dramatic morality play style matches that WWF/E is known for, and that really is ok. I like Randy Orton, Triple H, and more recent Bloodline stuff more than he ever will, and that's ok, too. I still recognize that he's a decent metric for judging lucha, strong style, and King's road matches.
I believe WWF/E revolves more around the television audience, and many other promotions that Dave seems to like better revolve more around the live audience. I like both, but some people prefer one to the other (i.e. Dave).
He has cited his star ratings as proof a wrestler is a success

If i had to put my 2 cents, I'd say there's more 5 star matches in the 2000s than any other decade, as in that decade you had a bunch of legends now only working for one federation. HHH, Undertaker, HBK, Chris Jericho, Hulk Hogan, Cena, Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, [redacted], Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Edge, RVD, Orton, Booker T The Rock Steve Austin, the Hardyz, and tons of other legends that are recognized by fans all over the world as being the greatest wrestlers ever, all at one point, for the most part, worked under the same federation and worked with each other a bunch, and yet this clown only gave 7 5 start matches the whole decade, and not a single one of those contained any of these guys.

Im agree with Dave meltzer.A five star match should be the match of the year. The match fans will never forget.for example Untertaker vs HBk retirement match. That was the best match i can remember. I can give that 5 ★.
bro just doesn’t even try to hide his bias, no value at all to his shite fucking ratings
A guy nearly got paralyzed getting dropped on his head and this clown loves it
I don't understand his logic. Sounds like bs.
To be fair, you’re finding only a few guys in WWE/F history who would be able to hang with Misawa & the other Japanese legends bell to bell. So I understand why he holds those in such high regard.
Not many people can do the 90s AJPW stuff, which is why it's so iconic. Dave recognizes that, and gives those performances a lot of praise, but I think it upsets wrestlers from other promotions because they may have to work a busier schedule which hampers their ability to put on classic matches. They believe you don't have to destroy yourself to put on a good show for a crowd.
Where I think the disconnect happens personally, is that the people who think he's biased believe he doesn't know that. I believe he does know, and he's choosing to showcase those matches anyway, because even though they may be more dangerous and hard-hitting, he's willing to highlight their sacrifice anyway, which may inadvertently lead to wrestlers pushing themselves too hard and hurting their careers in the process. Don't forget how we lost Misawa.
I think the world in general these days really wants to break everything down into "good" or "bad," but really nothing is that simple. Dave is neither good or bad. Far too many people believe he's influential and powerful in the business, but he's not, and personally, I don't think he claims to be either.
Because it's stiff and the rings back then are eased now to wrestle a reduced schedule
