Koryo-saram food became such an integral part of Kazakh cuisine. What's interesting is that many Koryo-saram dishes don't exist in Korean cuisine as we know it. For example, a while ago I was very surprised to find out that "Morkov po-koreyski" doesn't exist in cuisine of South Korea. Even though, "po-koreyski" means Korean style. There are many other dishes like that.

Same in Hawai’i. When different ethnic groups from all over arrived to work the plantations, the Hawaiian food culture mixed with all the new influences. So there are a few dishes we consider Korean on island, but doesn’t exist in South Korea and Korean restaurants outside of Hawai’i. Still delicious though!

If anyone wants the recipe, it's differs from one area to another, but the main thing are carrots an ground coriander seeds. Some people add chili flakes, garlic (a must if you ask me) and cilantro/parsley. You have to add a mixture of oil and vinegar to the carrots, put the spices in and let it sit for an hour in the fridge. I like heating the spices in the oil, add the vinegar and add this mixture to the carrots and garlic. Then let it cool and bon appetit. It has so much more flavor that way, imho.

Kurosawa-Saram also migrated to Tajikistan. They were evenly split between Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. Growing up I remember the taste of Korean markovca and Kim chi. We just loved it! It’s the best! I forgot what it’s called but they also have a dish where they marinade raw fish in vinegar and a ton of delicious spices. The acidity of vinegar basically cooks the fish. I could not get enough of it. I miss that. I cannot find it in US unfortunately. If anyone knows what I’m talking about and where to find it please let me know.

It's funny how most Koreans don't know about this! Russians who visit Korea sometimes looks for the carrot salad and are surprised to find we don't have them here 😂
Great history there too! I'd like to add that back in those days, kimchi made from cabbage were VERY rare. Cabbage became available in Korea only at the beginning of 1900s, and even then, initially it was so expensive that only the royal family or nobles could afford to eat kimchi made from cabbage.
The common folks of Joseon mostly made kimchi from radish, which is indeed quite similar to carrots.

Hi! Koryo Saram (고려사람) and Koryoin (고려인) are terms used to describe ethnic Koreans living in former Soviet countries. Similarly, Joseonjok (조선족) is a term for ethnic Koreans. Both terms are commonly used in South Korea. As an aside, North Koreans still refer to the Korean Peninsula as Joseon (조선).

One of Russia's most legendary rock musicians was Viktor Tsoi, who was Koryo-saram on his father's side (his mother was an ethnic Russian). He was widely considered a brilliant musician and songwriter and well-respected in the Soviet indie rock scene in the 1980s. He died tragically young at only 28, when he was killed in a car crash. It's believed he fell asleep at the wheel.
