    Great video! I reckon I wouldn't be too far on a different tangent to sum up your video as saying that characters need to have a certain goofiness about them, or perhaps appear vulnerable in order to convey charm and relatability. On a side note though, how else do you think the Simpsons scene at 7:15 could have been composed?

    Can you please explain the Simpsons analogy again? I have noticed that Simpsons punchlines don't land as much as they did in earlier years and that the quality has gone down , but I have never been able to put a finger on it. Were you saying that the charm came from the intentionally amateur looking wacky style they had before as compared to smoother methods today? I couldn't grasp the point clearly

    • @danfox4969
      @danfox4969  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That 'amateur wacky style' is actually incorporating key principles of animation that the newer 'smoother' animation does not. It's not actually 'amateur' at all. It's much, much better than the newer 'smoother' animation. Because that older animation paid more attention to physical performance, it was able to convey more complex variations of the same emotions - so the show was able to wring more emotion out of important character beats and punchlines

    • @keepplayingnice
      @keepplayingnice 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh great! One more thing. Do you think the writing has kept its standards even with this change in making techniques? Or has it also gone below par?

      +Dan Fox Especially now that Tomorrow Land has come and went. I was kinda snoozing when I watched it on HBO, but It wasn't exactly a memorable one. The scene's of Tomorrow Land's influence on regular earth were more fun than the actual place they went to.

    • @777boman
      @777boman 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bobunitone Tommorowland is definitely his worst outing yet by far, it had good ideas and I actually really liked Clooney's performance but all the other elements are so poorly executed.

    Your film analysis videos are very good and I have subscribed to your channel to watch them. It would be great if you could do them frequently and focus on well made movies and top notch directors and their techniques. Kurosawa. Lean. Spielberg etc.

    • @danfox4969
      @danfox4969  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Udana Fonseka Thanks Udana! Making these as frequently as possible is one of my goals. As for specific movies and filmmakers, I try to think of an original angle to come at things because I don't want to simply repeat other people on Vimeo and TH-cam who also make video essays about popular/top-tier filmmakers. Im still trying to find material/style that I'm most comfortable/productive with.

    • @collbackk
      @collbackk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dan Fox I'm glad to read you're planning on doing more of these! I discovered you last night and already watched your three videos twice, liked them, subscribed, shared, followed, etc.. Love what you do!

    • @MrUdanafonseka
      @MrUdanafonseka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dan Fox When it comes to top tier filmmakers I would suggest breaking down how they approach and direct a particular area such as action or visual comedy or suspense etc. I was not suggesting videos about popular filmmakers. Your videos already have an original angle. Hope you would keep doing what you are doing and find more clarity in your craft for yourself. Look forward to watching future videos. Good luck!

    On an unrelated note, did you realise that this guy ripped off your Abrahms video? If he was only inspired it would be kinda alright, but he seriously just straight up made the same video (same samples of interview and clips from JJ's films and all): th-cam.com/video/OjCRr622uLE/w-d-xo.html

    It's nice that you're celebrating animators, but it's a bit more complicated than that. An animated character's performance is a combination of the storyboards, acting by the animators, but also video reference from directors and sometimes motion capture that is then edited. This is why animators like Tal Schwarzman at Pixar admits that every animator is replaceable, because a character is a sum of many parts and studios can usually find people pretty easily who can do the animator's part of the job.
    Still, animators are an important part of the process and can do a bit to elevate the acting of a character.

    • @danfox4969
      @danfox4969  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ccs1989 I know, I'm an animator. But this is also like saying actors are easily replaceable pieces of the puzzle.

    • @Ccs1989
      @Ccs1989 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good point. And probably feature animators are at least a little less easily replaced than those in other sectors.

    • @danfox4969
      @danfox4969  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. To be honest, the impact animators like Milt Kahl had on Disney films can never be overstated.
