As far as footwear goes, If you need to put some actual force into the pedals, you're going to want shoes. Anything that's slim enough to not catch the other pedals is fine. The advantage of actual honest to god racing shoes is that they're fire resistant.
Thats it. If you're not planning on having your sim setup catch on fire, you'll be golden without racing shoes.

Those arent racing shoes, he'd be screwed if he wore those in a real accident. They're designed for the sim, not the track, but I guess racing shoes are good too if you have extra money and anxiety about spontaneous combustion

To be honest mate it's a simple discussion: if you have high end pedals with a load cell brake, you need boots. No man would ever wear socks in a real car.
If you have standard g27 pedals or similar, socks are just fine. It really does depend on the hardware.

Agreed. I have the G29 + H Shifter as my first setup for Assetto Corsa and I love it, plus it's great with socks. If I ever tried to drive my Miata with socks though...well, I probably wouldn't be here to type this :P

I actually have to drive around with socks in my moms aufi a2 since the pedals are so close together i hit the brake and the gas at the same time when im wearing shoes. (Eu Size 52)

Thick socks for me. Those winter insulated socks are the bomb for sim racing. Plus they keep your toesey woeseys warm, without sweat!
Shoes are just so damn difficult to find and clunky when you have big feet. Once you get above 12 US, good friggin' luck. Those of us who believe in Bigfoot because we have Bigfeet will empathize with the problem of hitting two pedals at once regularly, or having to space out the pedals suuuuuuuuper wide to prevent it. It sucks, man - shoe shopping in general sucks when you have big feet as well, it's a struggle, man.
Plus if you have a big foot you naturally have a heavy foot, so adding boots on top of that makes the pedal disappear. Even with the really light weight and thin shoes (barefoot shoes ftw!) I wear it just drains so much of the resistance, particularly in the throttle. Makes the pedal feel so light.
BTW - The HE Pedals don't "have" to use high forces. You could set them to be as light as Logitech pedals if you want. ;)

I'm 6ft 3 us size 12, I've found in the BRDC F4 car my foot gets stuck on the steering column, same issue in a Radical. With racing boots in most cars I'm fine, in the radical it's manageable with some foot work, in the F4 I simply couldn't left foot brake at all.
With sim pedal sets, I can't see anyone having issues as long as they have racing boots. When i wear trainers in my road BMW my feet hit both pedals, but with thin shoes or boots no problems at all.

    • @AidanMillward
      @AidanMillward 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Richie Speed I'm lucky in that I'm 5'10" and UK size 9 then. I remember reading somewhere that Williams had to build two totally different monocoques in 1993 because Prost was 5'5 with tiny feet and Hill was 6'0" with UK 13s.

I think what a lot of people are missing here is that racing boots are more than just about pedal feel. Kind of like my 10" high steel toe work boots (almost military grade), yes the thick sole means I can stand on nails, but ankle support makes a big difference in all day comfort.
I love the ankle support I get in my racing boots (only 6" tall but it's way better than ordinary shoes).

Haven't tried load cell brakes, but I imagine that they'd require boots to be used to the fullest. Especially in a setup to mimic the force required to brake a real car. Lower end pedals can be used with socks just fine.
A hint: get karting boots. A lot cheaper, basically the same feel. No need to use nomex stuff if your pedals aren't going to catch fire (...or are they?).

  • @JonasRosenven

For racing I'm using a very cheap pair of trainers that's got a soft and thin sole. I find them to be a great alternative to racing boots. I found mine in the clothes section of my local supermarket for around 13 euros - I'm using the Fanatec clubsport v3 pedals and racing in socks is just too uncomfortable for me when heeling and toing.

I used to get sore ankles when racing for more than an hour at a time.
I'm not going to say that ordinary running shoes aren't nearly as good, but racing boots definitely helped me. Mine are 6" tall at the heel and you can feel it has extra heel and ankle support.

I'm bloody useless as a simracer, always 6 seconds behind lol. Can't heel and toe for shit, have big feet and my chair moves, can't h shift either, been racing for eons but God hates the dumb.I get enjoyment out of watching you and sth paw racer,I just get anxiety and then depression when I race, bloody coffee.I did start very late though.Got my first PC at the age of thirty five in 2001,played GPL to death and got sort of good left foot braking with my fav wheel the Logi red Momo and a squash ball under the brake pedal, also had a act labs shifter.I think simracing has passed me by now with my eyes failing having keratoconus disease,my eyes start itching then burning and I have to get off the PC.Suicidal thoughts all the time also.Blokes like you and sth paw give me lots of enjoyment and watching my aussie rules team,Richmond.

Got my Abruzzi boots yesterday, tried them on and did some lean exercise on pedals, without actually playing. They instantly felt like heaven and nothing compares. I've tried all sorts of footwear but they need to be super light, thin base. Most sports shoes and sneakers that you have at home, are prolly too heavy or have a thick bottom ;)

I started off in socks, but found that I was getting a sore spot on my right heel, so back to sneakers for me. I also had to adjust my pedals to give me as much space as possible because I have extra wide feet. Would definitely look at a pair of racing boots if I had the money to spend on them. I started out with socks when I got my G920s, but the constant heel-and-toe kept hurting my right foot. Then I remembered that I have a pair of very old and comfortable suede Puma Speedcats somewhere, went and found them, and voilá, perfect.

Ok so who the fuck buys buys boots to play games
It's like using bucket seats when you drive short distances in the city

Travos k i bought some Puma Driftcats from Puma Outlet when i wisited germany. Didn't really help on my old DFGT, But now with the G29 it helps, since i can press the brake easier, also, since the pedals are metallic, they protect my foot if it accidentally slips off during heel and toe or if i have to jump on the clutch quickly (Emergency braking in ETS or ATS)

Well, I'm glad you found a good use for them, but for me i have been driving everyday ever since i got my licence, and i haven't felt the need to use any "helping" gear, when I'm tired i use my bare feet (i feel like the give me more control over the mountainous roads), otherwise my old sneakers do the job just fine. Maybe it's different for every person, i am used to the curvy roads of my region and i am not particularly rich so i work with what i have. I have been driving for the past 9 years so i lost my desire to try new things.
