San Francisco is specifically known for homosexuality because during its Gold Rush boom years, when men from all over the U.S. and the world came there seeking fortune, they did not bring women with them, nor were women largely invited to come. Men living rough and tumble lives, what do you think happened? Guys started turning on to other guys and no one stopped it, even after the Gold Rush ended. Notice in other places in the world where there were settlers rushing in. They brought their wives and families, and women were encouraged to come and settle as well. You don't see the level of homosexuality in those places like you do somewhere like San Francisco.
