If there isn't a conversation about Ødegaard in this pod.... Who am I kidding, there probably isn't. This is the can do no wrong, the Anti Xhaka we're talking about. You speak against him you get 'chances created' thrown in your face. Apparently he created FOUR chances in this game. 😂 Can anyone remember even ONE ? The amount of headloss this one man causes me in every single high tempo, fast paced game where we are actually being matched in workrate and aggressively pressed... No right foot, no PnP, no Ball carrying, no Off the ball dynamism to take markers off Saka, no passing range beyond fancy 5yd backheels and chips, ABSOLUTELY BUTCHERING EVERY SINGLE TRANSITION, forcing Havertz to come wide because he can't generate any support for Saka off the ball. Which then causes Martinelli to become isolated and leaves the center empty. We could have incredible Martinelli- Havertz combinations but this one guy..... And then he gets best in the world shouts for playing 5 yd wall passes & backheels against low blocks at home. Next summer, if he's still the lynchpin in Arteta's plan, I am pretty much convinced these 5 yrs of pain will amount to nothing. Either move him to the left or get rid.

It’s okay to sacrifice one side for the another but disturb the whole team for some weird reasons which clearly the numbers are against using partey as right back
What makes our slow predictability so much more frustrating is that, Mikel specifically said he wanted to be more unpredictable, and thay was the reason for having very versatile players. Whats he doing? I feel like Mikel gets himself in a mess every season wherre he completely forgets his own philosophies and just gets stuck in a loop of doing the same things over and over again until crisis point, and then figures it out. Mikel is predictable, therefore we are.
It’s not using him as a scapegoat, he’s the forward he needs to time his run better and when you’re at that position of the field, where you could see clearly across the line, there’s not really an excuse to not time your run. I don’t understand what’s wrong with Arsenal fans Not being able to call out when a player is not good enough for where we wanna be as a club, Martinelli is not good enough to win us a premier league it’s that simple..
It feels like Arsenal have been continuously battling with ill timed luck, and reaching for our best form. People forget luck, variables, and uncontrollables, form a huge part of football. Arsenal have been very unlucky which has means Mikel needs to be perfect in the areas we can control, and in my view he hasn’t. He will however point to our box efficiency citing the offside goal, and the 2 big opps we had. His setup he will argue delivered the opportunities to win this game
ahahahah imagine Adama versus MLS, he'd ended his career right there. Obviously Merino's minutes are limited due to health concerns. Tierney not fit enough to perform on required level. Remember Timber played like 4 games for youth team before having 15 minutes in PL. So i don't understand what are you on. Better not to concede than to attack more fluently, look at TTH
George, I think you made an error on xG analysis around 27 mins in. Idk where you got your stats from, but if we assume that our open-play xG drops by an average 0.4 per 90 compared to 23-24, then (as you suggest) open-play xG will be roughly 15xG lower over the course of the season. According to Understat, our open-play xG in 23-24 was 65.27, which resulted in 62 goals. This means that, for each marginal open-play xG created by Arsenal, they scored, on average, an extra ~0.95 goals. If you hold our open-play finishing ability constant, then an open-play xG projected to be 15 less than last season's tally means that you should expect us to score *14 fewer goals from open-play* - this is a pretty substantial difference. (This analysis is super hacky + back-of-the-envelope, but I think your projection of "3-4 goals" is a pretty large underestimate)
My point was more that elite finishers have a conversion rate on xG roughly at 30% which is where if you generate 15xG more operating at the average conversion rate of elite finishers which tracks at 30% in szn averages in the upper echelon of finishers your looking at about 5 goals for a 15xG.
@@TheCannonPod Some elite finishers manage a *shot conversion rate* of around 30%, but they definitely don't have an *xG conversion rate* of 30%, as "xG" is a metric for quality-weighted shots. One example: In 2022-23, Haaland had 28.4 xG. If he scored at a rate of 30% on xG, he'd have scored ~8.52 PL goals that season. Instead, he scored 36 goals. ... though I actually notice Haaland's figure isn't far off a 30% *overperformance*, which might be the source of the confusion here? But it's still a 1.3x conversion rate rather than a 0.3x conversion rate. Love the pod, love your tactical analysis, but you are wrong on this one George. :P

The only thing holding the team back is Mikel. Now I am not saying he has to leave, however, he needs to trust players and be brave. The man seems to create more problems for any singular issue that arises in the team. How do you put your best midfielder at right back and your best right-back at left back? Two players, by the way, who are integral to how the right-hand side functions. As a consequence, both Timber and Partey made one overlap each. Both constantly tried to go central which is crowded. Party received one pass I can remember in the half-space and couldn't even turn. It's funny how rigid Mikel can be but also quick to gut the efficient side of his team. He would rather kill the team than play a natural left-back in Tierney. Does Tierney’s inclusion in the team alters the team so much that it could swing our dominance in the game? It's really bizarre. Mikel is holding the team back and it's time he lets the hand brake go. PS: I made this comment before watching the pod so if I am off base, it's because I'm still pissed at the manager and his cowardly ways.
Best comment so far. A 💯 spot on. He is a coward, too scared to take risks and trust his own. We aren't winning shit until that changes and he is so set in his ways i don't see that changing. Watch him put out another shit team tommorrow rather than trust youngsters.
I absolutely agree with what you say. But Kt hasnt played in over a year, its more risky to play him. What if we concede another goal from that side ? Maybe we couldve have Mikel merino start this game, like George mentions. We need alteast one more left footed player on LHS

Mikel... And our complete lack of first team winger or striker or LB and question marks around the midfield composition. The first team is only two thirds complete and the squad less so.
too much waiting to buy in the right fucking player. Fans going over the top with our smelly signings like Havertz doesnt help it either. The club sees that sort of shit.
If Gabriel was VVD, all of our problems would be solved. If we keep this same lineup, a teak in philosophy would do us well I think. Gabriel has started this in the past few months and Saliba has it in his locker as well but if we added some direct passes from Gabriel and Saliba during the initial "Back/Side pass after winning ball to confirm control and start buildup phase". If we added some dynamic directness, akin to some of Liverpool's loops with their CB's, from our back line and drilled this into maybe 30% of all ( Win ball in middle third and instantly look to instill our control and start buildup ) plays. The space is there during this initial period to have Martinelli run into space, Saka to muscle into space, Kai into space over top. At worst is discourages a fierce counter press if they are hesitant for have to immediately get back.
The reason why I disagree with the Osimhen shout culturally is because Arsenal _has_ tried to do this in recent memory with Sanchez. I think you can have mavericks in the side but if Osimhen ends up poisoning the well in the same way Sanchez did, it’s not worth it. I’d even go as far as to say that the Sanchez signing was the start of a wave of “un-Arsenal” signings which ruined the culture for years. There’s a lot that can be done with the players we have, and I’m pretty sure on this pod y’all have mentioned that things like playing Ødegaard on the left, playing strong sided players at FB which was mentioned today would make more of a difference than signing Osimhen and potentially ruining a bunch of on-field relationships.
Swapping Odegaard and Rice in that game solves a lot, gives Saka an overlapping midfielder eith no Timber. Gives LHS a left footed combination player for the left
how are you guys missing an obvious point?? Partey RB and Timber LB worked well against United. Frustration is why didn't put Timber on the right near the end last 20mins to go help Saka your best player?? Very negative and not brave
I hope we can see that the numbers aren't all that matters. How many games over the last 2 seasons have our numbers been great but we didn't get the result? Until we accept that there's more to it than the data we aren't gonna get where we are aiming to be.
Liverpool look electric booth sides in attack and even Darwin can't hit a cows arse with a banjo look at the chances he misses we don't attack with that pace and venom we did in past couple seasons.
I'd be happy if Arteta left now, which is weird, because I think he is a great manager, and I'm definitely not calling for it , but if he left right now with the base squad and mentality he has ingrained in the team, I think a more attack minded and fluid coach could come in and do a really good job. I think Mikel himself, so far at least, is too rigid and too much of a system coach. I think whatever happens Arteta has been a monumental figure in getting Arsenal back to a solid, highly competitive team, whether he evolves to be the manager to 'take the handbrake off' or not, he has done a fantastic job.
I'm slowly losing patience on Arteta. Another thing to note: His secretive nature toward the media is now working against him in the eyes of us, the fans. I genuinely wish I knew what he was thinking-whether there’s a bigger picture at play or if he’s simply getting the basics wrong far too often, which is a bigger concern.
So Arteta is supposed to share in public the internal thinkings of the club; his coaching/selection decisions; severity of injuries; etc? Tell me what manager worth his salt would do that!
Evan Ferguson on a conditional loan to buy? With a highish threshold of % of games played and goals etc. If he works, he works. If he doesn't, Arteta won't play him and we go again in the summer. Could even be multi years, I'm aware it's not FIFA or FM, but Brighton seem to be slowly moving away from him. In terms of killer to come in and challenge Arteta that I wanted to come in years ago, Benzema was always the guy. Would've also loved Griezmann...Oh well... Sverre Halseth Nypan Lewis Ferguson Luca Koleosho Tyler Dibling All would help and fit the profile. And could probably be had in January? I'm also of the opinion (hope) that next year Arsenal will go after at least one rotation piece on a free Valles or Yarek, which also overall saves coin. Get well George.
Tierney hasn't played in like 12 months? Lewis-Skelly just returned from injury. Not the answer. My eyes went to Rice's poor free kicks. Every one overhit. Havertz getting bullied by Bassey all game. Raya's dimunitive behind unable to reach Jimenez' shot. Kiwior's slow behind being left in the dust by Jimenez. Partey missing a sitter. Those were issues, right?
I think we need to be talking about these. We had plenty of opportunity. Changing the LB wont make or break the issue. Just people speculating in hindsight
It's funny how you guys start off with "I don't wanna be to negative" and then you are. To me you guys are the definition of being passive aggressive and George, you are the hindsight king, well done mate 👏
little things??? the whole attack is shit..saka and Odegaard have this amazing ability of not only ghosting pressure games but also the post match analysis. forget goal scoring, this team doesn't even have the guille or intelligence to play one two with fullbacks to make quick throw-in play.
The only "thing holding Arsenal back" is the manager. He has taken us as far as he can at this point in his career. I don't want to hear about weakness on the left because we had the best left-back in the country, who overlapped and defended well, scored, and was a leader on the pitch. Arteta tried to convert him to a midfielder, and then sidelined him, and then loaned him out, destroyed his market value, and then could not sell him. Kieran Tierney. We also have Sterling, who is electric on the left. The problem is Arteta and his selection. I don't want to hear about the lack of strikers, because Arteta never gave Nketiah a chance, get rid of Aubamayeng and Lacazette (who both scored freely after they left), and then sold Balogun. The problem is Arteta. I don't want to hear about fullback injuries because Timber is a fine right-back, and Tierney is a fine left-back. They are both fit. I don't want to hear about lack of transition because Smith-Rowe and Reiss Nelson (and Joe Willock) were great at transition but Arteta despises Academy players or anyone who was there before he became the manager. Again, the problem is Arteta. Arteta will be a great manager, but at this point he cannot make the most of his whole squad, rotation, substitutions, and do so in timely fashion. The starters are worn out as subs occur in the last 10 or 20 minutes. The bench aren't game-ready because they aren't involved enough. The whole squad is subject to injury because a handful is played too much and the majority is played too little and too late. Arteta is holding the squad back. That's all that needs to be fixed. Any seasoned manager will win with this squad, but not Arteta.
Tierney is rubsh. Zinchenko is so much more skillful. Auba, Laca, Nketiah can’t even do a simple stepover. Can’t tiki taka pass. Can’t drop deep to create like a number 10. They are not skillful or technical at all. Arteta is capable to do the very best things, like what he did in 22/23. But he chooses not to, he now makes us into a defensive boring team. He is capable to be world class but he chooses not to be, and that is so frustrating.
@rickydawson You made a list of- good players, not enough quality(that any Arsenal supporter wanted moved on); perma-crocks, not reliable enough; some indisciplined players that moved on…. I’m just glad you’re not the manager at Arsenal
0.4 difference in xG is precisely the expected Goals, no?...not chances...? So xG down by 0.4 per game would statistically work out as around 15 goals per year? Understand the copium, but lets be realistic. If the xG is down by 0.4 per game. Then the goals we are expected to score based on the chances we create has decreased by 0.4 per game, thus 15 less per year. Happy to be corrected?
George is saying it without saying it. Declan Rice is the friggin problem. Drop Rice and play Merino . Put partey back at CDM and timber at Right back and watch the team cook. Control without scoring is useless.
Something I don't think anyone's considered is that we've been chasing Man City for 3 years and using them as our target, and now they're useless. Could it be that the team is feeling directionless because the target we've been hunting for so long just isn't there anymore? Our form and performances have basically mirrored City's for so long that we're kind of tied to them. This shouldn't be the case obviously, we should just be aiming for the top of the league, but these things could be playing a part. City have been the fake rabbit thing on a dog track and we've been the dog that chases it, the rabbit is fucked and the dog doesn't know what to do. Again though, this comes down to the motivations instilled into the players by the manager, City may have been a convenient yard stick to aim for to get to the top, but they aren't the goal, the goal is the top regardless of who we have to overcome

Can anyone remember even ONE ?

(This analysis is super hacky + back-of-the-envelope, but I think your projection of "3-4 goals" is a pretty large underestimate)
yeah noticed that too, 1 xg goal isnt a chance to score with around 30% chance of scoring like he put it, its 1 goal on average
xG stats are for tw@s
My point was more that elite finishers have a conversion rate on xG roughly at 30% which is where if you generate 15xG more operating at the average conversion rate of elite finishers which tracks at 30% in szn averages in the upper echelon of finishers your looking at about 5 goals for a 15xG.
@TheCannonPod
*Season

People are blinded by pace & flair. Always have been always will be.
Second comment only trying to gain exposure 🤣🤣🤣
Big fan lads, lets cool it on the 'arteta is a genius' talk please.
I like Arteta.
If Arteta is a genius, what does that make Arne Slot!
Someone who’s inherited Mo Salah.
Put simply, Martinelli, Trossard and Havertz are putting up similar numbers to Gakpo, Diaz and Núñez but attack feels less concentrated at Liverpool
Liverpool look electric booth sides in attack and even Darwin can't hit a cows arse with a banjo look at the chances he misses we don't attack with that pace and venom we did in past couple seasons.
7 goals in 17 months Martinelli, Deadwood Trossard & Donkey Havertz
What phase is Slot in?
I'd be happy if Arteta left now, which is weird, because I think he is a great manager, and I'm definitely not calling for it , but if he left right now with the base squad and mentality he has ingrained in the team, I think a more attack minded and fluid coach could come in and do a really good job. I think Mikel himself, so far at least, is too rigid and too much of a system coach. I think whatever happens Arteta has been a monumental figure in getting Arsenal back to a solid, highly competitive team, whether he evolves to be the manager to 'take the handbrake off' or not, he has done a fantastic job.

Too defensive.
Not overloading the middle.
Not enough skillful/technical players on the pitch.
Always shoot at a tight angle/too far out.

If you can't get the name of the league right you don't get an opinion.
Funny how you mention Tierney but don’t mention he’s a crock, who’s also not very good. ESR/Nelson LOOL.

@@muhammadsarumi4519 Who told you that?
😂
