I had this game when it first came out in the late 80s. Had lots of fun with it. I figured out that you could play guys out of position, like Babe Ruth at short or Ricky Henderson catching and they would make more errors out of their natural position. I would do that just to see how it would play out. Lots of fun.
I haven't seen this game in nearly 30 years. I remember picking it up from a yard sale, and it was sold with just the pack-in cartridge featuring MLB Hall of Famers. Playing wihtout cartridges, though, let you play as either American League or National League All-Stars. Better than nothing, and it was nice to be able to play a game like this right out of the box without having to hunt down cartridges for a game that was at least 5 years old when I got my hands on it. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Great video!! Thanks for making it. Incredible game for the time, even now holds value. Would be fun to spend a Saturday and set up a tournament with friends.
This game is an absolute gem! I don't have this game myself, but I'm wondering if it's available on Amazon or not. I found the game on youtube for the first time yesterday, and I was hooked! Who does the announcer sound like? He kinda sounds like either Mel Allen, or Lon Simmons. If I was to find this game somewhere, would it come with all team cartridges? Or would I have to get those separately. I like how the thing vibrates when it blinks. That way you can time your swing properly. Anyway, if you still have this game, can you please do a game with the Reds and Braves, if you have the cartridges?
Not sure if you noticed but it's from 1988 so Amazon itself wouldn't sell it, though a third party could possibly sell it on Amazon's marketplace. I'm sure there will be sellers on eBay that have them and maybe even new, however, the only cartridge originally packaged with it is the hall of fame (All-Star teams are built-in). Of course, someone might sell it bundled with more cartridges. I do own the one with Cincinnati, Houston, and Atlanta (these are 1987 rosters) so I could play it again though I have already done two videos of this toy as someone else previously made a request. Not sure if I want to play a full nine innings as that takes a while but if I have time I'll try. There were a couple other videos I might do first before the end of the year.
I'm just curious as to how the discs work. As in, do you have 1 team on a disc? Or is it like, 1 disc has a few tems on it, and another has a few, etc etc etc. Finding this kinda gem is obviously gonna be difficult. I believe your vid was the first one i found of this toy. When I watched it, something in my brain said to me, you must have this! So this gizmo was made in 1988, but it uses the 1987 season, players included from that year? It's a shame they didn't make more. Can you imagine a 90s version of this? Parker Brothers would've made a killing.
@@aaronreed5612 There are eight cartridges with 3-4 teams on each one. You should check out the blog entry as I often have one for the toy videos where you can see photos and some more details. They can be found in the video descriptions but I'll leave the one for this one here too: www.vault1541.com/2017/07/youtubed-starting-lineup-talking.html.
I'm fully blind, so I wouldn't be able to see the photos. @@Vault1541 I have absolutely no vision at all. I know this thing is over 35 years old, but i'm sure it's out there somewhere.
Pretty freakin amazing. Thanks for showing this. I'm just getting into board games and I've gotten some really cool electronic and DVD/VHS board games. But this one is really impressive with how much narration it has.
It is a great game though the cost likely kept it from being too successful. I've been getting rid of my regular board games lately, though most are average games from the '80s that smell like a basement. I have played some of the VHS games, like Clue and Commercial Crazies, and have a Star Wars one I never tried.
That voice is incredible for a device from 1988. Maybe this question isn't particularly relevant to the game, but what does this toy do when the batteries go flat? A lot of toys of this age would just go crazy and do all kinds of things and make all sorts of strange electronic noises and do all sorts of random things.
My announcer turned into a demon. Couldn’t play it anymore because he would randomly talk from my closet with the switch off. “Next up, Eddie Matthews, hitting .271” in a gargled tone like he was drowning in battery acid. Probably because it was.
@@Lachlant1984 That would’ve required me to dig it out of the haunted closet that had access to under the house where dead people lived. (That’s what I imagined anyway)
@@Combat_Carl Some of those access passages can be scary to some, but I highly doubt that dead people lived in them, you'd probably know if they did because of the smell.
Wow my fave childhood baseball game… 😂😂😂😂😂 I used to remember trying to hack other players I forget but I remember getting Carl Yastrzemski… don’t remember how … it was a code 🤷♂️ but those were the good old days
That's too bad you got rid of it but it can be tough to keep things that aren't used often. I know I've got too much stuff which is part of the reason I've started doing this channel as I should have enough content to keep this going for a while.
starting line up talking baseball was from parker brothers.it featured baseball players including keith hernadez and baseball pitchers including mike scott and fernando valenzula.
Used to play it all the time with my cousins. Only had the base version which was the All Star Game. I'd do silly stuff like use Steve Sax as a pitcher.
Did I misspeak in the video? Parker Brothers did make the electronic toy while the Starting Lineup brand was part of Kenner. Both were owned by Tonka though so it was basically all the same company, and now Hasbro owns everything.
I still have this! Not anywhere near the condition of yours, the baseball field decal came off some time ago and cant find it and dont have the plastic stadium lights but the game itself still works, even have a couple of the cartridges
I do have it but trying to get a grand slam could take a while. If I recall you can't stop base runners so you wouldn't be able to tell them to take a single rather than a double in an attempt to get the bases loaded faster.
Can you at least do a video of a whole nine-inning game so I can hear all the audio content it has? Also the way you can get the bases loaded is with three "ball four"'s.
@@thetoycollectorofseville6428 That's a good point. Instead of playing the computer one could play both sides and intentionally walk the other team to set it up. Unless you meant to just walk the computer over and over and give them an easy pitch to maybe hit out. I don't have a lot of time to try now but maybe in the near future I can.
@@thetoycollectorofseville6428 I didn't play a full nine innings but I did record a new video starting in the 5th inning until the end with a grand slam: th-cam.com/video/udN73zSC6sQ/w-d-xo.html. The announcer does remark on that but doesn't have anything special to say when I hit back-to-back-to-back home runs.
The game has all of the MLB teams that played in 1987 divided among eight cartridges. For video posts where I show items I also write a blog post with photos of the items from the video and sometimes more. In the post I do list which teams are on each cartridge and have a scan of the back of one cartridge box that has details of the other cartridges if you want to see more: www.vault1541.com/2017/07/youtubed-starting-lineup-talking.html.
@Brian Jones I'm a year late on a response but I somehow missed this comment. Unfortunately, I'm not sure of the answer. It's probably similar to a video game where you might be able to do good with a bad player if you're good and I'd expect the home runs are most often by the power hitters. Not sure what would determine if a fielder will make an error as the player has no control over that; could be random or based on fielding percentage. Sorry I'm mostly guessing here!
Probably eBay. It looks like they typically sell for $10-50 depending on what's included though I don't see any currently listed. I didn't realize there is a football version which there are some listings for.
