  • These tunes are pretty much all played in Cajun tuning (DGCF smallest to largest) which is one whole step down from standard tuning (EADG). Each string is called out by its standard tuning name.

    I remember seeing a TV programme on Scottish television back in the early 1970s when the great violin maestro Sir Yehudi Menuhin went exploring the Scottish fiddle tradition in Niel Gow country and he had a meeting with the legendary master of Scottish traditional fiddle playing, Hector MacAndrew in the ballroom at Blair Castle (ancestral seat of the Duke of Atholl) who endeavoured to teach Menuhin the art of playing the Scottish strathspey. You could clearly hear the difference between the fiddler and the concert violinist with Menuhin really struggling to master the Scots Snap which is the vital component of the up-driven bow in the traditional strathspey, and I will always remember MacAndrew saying, "Aye laddie, ye've almaist got it!"

    Old-time fiddlers were often referred to as a dance band, and held the fiddle against their chest so that they could call a square dance while playing the dance tune.

    My dad back in 1930s played fiddle in a band... He was an old man when I was born and by that time He had stopped playing. I really would have like to have heard him play. But I now am learning the fiddle/violin. I prefer fiddle. Hope he likes it...wherever he is in the beyond.

      Maybe so, but both have demanding expectations that a lot of time and talent are required to meet. Sounds like melodies/rhythms used by maritime communities other small & portable instruments influenced fiddle playing. Violin compositions made to go with furniture, like harpsichord or large string bass.

    The words “fiddle” and “violin” are two names for the same stringed instrument-fiddle is just an informal way of referring to the violin. In the context of classical music, it’s typically called a violin. In a bluegrass band, it’s more likely to be called a fiddle.
    Technically, the word fiddle can refer to any instrument in the viol family (a family of stringed instruments that preceded the violin family). But most commonly, fiddle is simply used as an informal name for the violin.

      Mitch Reed Music Lessons I try to make a distinction between styles and techniques. For classical music I use the orthodox bow hold and stance. Now that I am exploring traditional fiddle playing, I use a completely different grip and posture. I find your examples of ornamentation/slides very useful. My main difficulty coming from classical training is that I find learning by ear a bit of a challenge. My first instinct is to look for sheet music, I can sight read anything but playing by ear is something else. I put on my headphones and play along with you. Thanks again and have a great day.

    I don't think there's as much as a divide between classical and folk as modern musicians like to think. You have to imagine that the great composers of the day were influenced by the folk music they undoubtedly heard everywhere they went. You can hear a lot of Bariolage in Vivaldi and Bach such as his Partita No. 3, as well as strong folk influences in Brahm's hungarian dance. It would be really interesting to hear a fiddler re-interpret those pieces and add a swing bowing/rythym and ornaments to it.

    I am wondering if we really need to differentiate it? For instance the piano... no matter what the genre or style of playing it is still called the piano/Pianoforte or in general a keyboard.
    Can't the fiddle or violin be the same? only called differently? Just my 2 cents ha ha ha fiddle or violin both is good for me.

    Sir, I've noticed that a lot of fiddlers prefer steel core strings than synthetic. Do you lower the bridge due to the higher tension and thinner strings than synthetics. It seems that quite a few prefer Helicore steel strings which are 53.0 lbs. tension, than say Dominants which are 48.3 lbs.. My current fiddle is set at 3mm on E and 4mm on G. I took it to a luthier and he thought it was too low but, there was no buzzing and good volume and projection.

      fretless instruments can be a major frustration. finger position is paramount to be in key. you have an advantage tho as you already play guitar and mandolin and should have tough fingertips. a good ear helps but finger position is everything and working a bow is a whole lot different than strumming or chording. you already have a knowledge of music and can hear bad notes and that is required. be patient. you have years to learn and violin is difficult. a little a day goes a long way. by the way i had to laugh out loud at your last remark. violins can make some godawful sounds. WOW indeed.

    actually the main diff. goes back to the norman conquest when there were 2 languages in england- Germanic and french/ latin - later to be blended into the English language . if you were a commoner or peasant having been conquered you would have been most likely anglo saxon and the word for you would have been fiddle - if you were of the ruling class - violin would be what you would call the instrument. because of that fiddle is now associated with the lower classes , folk , peasants, etc.

    • @MitchReedMusicLessons
      @MitchReedMusicLessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the history Jonathan! What I’m talking about here is what the difference is between fiddling and playing violin. At least nowadays, there is not a difference instrument-wise between a fiddle and a violin except for what is being played with it (though generally people might refer to a cheaper violin as a fiddle).

    Well, fiddles in past times (more than a century ago) were made with scrap material found here and there, it was poor man hand made because no money to buy a "real" violin. Violins, like it looks in modern days, were luthier's art and pricey - available mostly for classical musicians playing for the bourgeoisie and Kings. So it is a modern conception that fiddles and violins are the same; only since industrial mass production has lowered violins' price so almost everyone can now buy one - exception, in poor countries today, sitll many people make their own instruments with scrap material savaged here and there in garbages... By the way, I do not agree there is a right way to hold violin or bow in fiddling world, this is a classical music statement you are repeating because you started learning in classical music set up. The kind of sound one is looking for in authentic historical fiddling is totally different than what classical musicians are trained for (fiddling avoids vibrato and emphasize rythmic and free ornementations improvisation on simple repetitive melody patterns , classical music emphasizes complex melody and more by the book sheets of music approach).

    Fiddle is a generic term for a bowed stringed instrument. The violin and erhu are both fiddles. Fiddle is a Germanic word, whereas violin is a romance word. All violins are fiddles but not all fiddles are violins. In modern usage the terms have come to have more to do with the music one plays and less to do with a designation of instrument. Classical is played on a violin and folk styles are played on a fiddle.
