No refuelling now. The pit crews just didn't have to rush in those days as they knew how much time they had to change the tires. It wasn't a "race" as the fuel load determined how long the stop was.

I've never understood mid-race refueling. One of the most dangerous parts of racing -- the fuel, being, you know, inflammable -- being done in a way that is hurried is just bonkers. Any time you hurry, you invite mistakes. Inviting mistakes while racing leads to... well, we've seen what it leads to.

My father was the lollipop man for an F1 team in the early 90's, he would tell me wild stories about the dangers of the pit in those days. I used to think his job was the hardest because he was in charge of everyone's safety, but he said he never wanted to be the guy in charge of the fuel!
Yeah, fuel used by F1 cars back then was methanol and it has trouble of being literally invisible when burning, so if you engulf in flames - people might take time to realize that your panicking swaying means your flesh is melting already for seconds.

There was also no speed limit either and tyres were nowhere near as fragile as they are now, hence you’d get the rears burning out as the car struggled for traction.

@@MelancholyRider It means what it means : from 1980 to 1984 then 1994 to 2009, you were allowed to refuel the cars during the pitstops, and because it was longer to refuel than to change tyres, the process of tyre changing didn't need to be as perfect as today.
Back then they had more time to change the tyres because of the refuelling. Since 2010, they only had to change the tyres, so they had to make the changing process faster to gain some time.

Back in the 90s Even in the construction field we had to drag out cords, grab our 20lb plug in drill with the worn out cord that zaps you. Now we have battery powered tools that hang on your pocket weighing in under 3lbs

Seeing F1 videos makes me miss my Dad 🥺 we use to record all the races on VHS, i still got the tapes, been going back and forth on if i should digitize them and upload them somewhere, we got races basically from 1990 to 2006 or so, whenever VHS went the dodo

@@omikronweapon ah that I was unaware of as I rarely watched Formula 1 races. I did watch alot of NASCAR up until about April 2001. I still watch GT Series racing though at times and WRC Rally.
Pit Stops are a major part of NASCAR due to how they affect position. When the difference between the front and back of the pack is fractions of a second per lap, and a lap takes 20~30 seconds. The time spent with a pit stop is big. With this in mind NASCAR places restrictions on pit stops to make the process slower. 5 people over the wall on a NASCAR pit team, needs to use a dolly to lift the vehicle, needs to remove 5 lugs, can only work on one side of the vehicle at a time. It's very physical, like the full jug weighs 80 lbs. full and the person could possibly put 2 of those into the vehicle in 16 seconds.
@@jack_of_all_trades_master_none NASCAR has full course cautions several times per race. Now, with stage racing, often green flag pit stops only occur 2-3 times per race. They are much faster because of the one lug wheels now too. In the 90s, even the top teams like Earnhardt’s crew could barely beat 20:seconds. Now, it’s in the 10 second range for 4 tires and fuel.

There was no refueling in 1990. It was (re-)introduced in 1994 along with the pit lane speed limit regulation. (I say "reintroduced", because refueling was technically legal until the mid 80s when teams first started to really attempt to include them in their strategy, but was quickly banned due to safety reasons.)
@@festol1 it’s basically impossible to stall the cars now. Back then, they didn’t have paddle shifters either. A fully manual transmission, not a steering wheel that looks like it came with a PlayStation.

Seeing F1 videos makes me miss my Dad 🥺 we use to record all the races on VHS, i still got the tapes, been going back and forth on if i should digitize them and upload them somewhere, we got races basically from 1990 to 2006 or so, whenever VHS went the dodo
The jump between the year 2000 and 2010 was phenomenal. Then they cut it in half within another 10 years wow. Thanks for the comparison, now i want to go search a video on NASCAR. I also wonder how the GT1, GT2, and Prototypes did over the past 30 years.
from 2010, they werent allowed to refuel anymore. they didn't get more efficient so much, but rather had to leave out a big chunk of the actions
@@omikronweapon ah that I was unaware of as I rarely watched Formula 1 races. I did watch alot of NASCAR up until about April 2001. I still watch GT Series racing though at times and WRC Rally.
Pit Stops are a major part of NASCAR due to how they affect position. When the difference between the front and back of the pack is fractions of a second per lap, and a lap takes 20~30 seconds. The time spent with a pit stop is big.
With this in mind NASCAR places restrictions on pit stops to make the process slower. 5 people over the wall on a NASCAR pit team, needs to use a dolly to lift the vehicle, needs to remove 5 lugs, can only work on one side of the vehicle at a time. It's very physical, like the full jug weighs 80 lbs. full and the person could possibly put 2 of those into the vehicle in 16 seconds.

@@jack_of_all_trades_master_none NASCAR has full course cautions several times per race. Now, with stage racing, often green flag pit stops only occur 2-3 times per race. They are much faster because of the one lug wheels now too. In the 90s, even the top teams like Earnhardt’s crew could barely beat 20:seconds. Now, it’s in the 10 second range for 4 tires and fuel.
I don't know about the pit-stop time... But the sound from the gasoline machine.. With pure horsepower... Is awesome..

I wonder how much time did it take from pit entry to pit exit between 1990 (refuelling, no speed limit) and 2010 (no refuelling, pit lane speed limited mostly to 80 km/h)
There was no refueling in 1990. It was (re-)introduced in 1994 along with the pit lane speed limit regulation. (I say "reintroduced", because refueling was technically legal until the mid 80s when teams first started to really attempt to include them in their strategy, but was quickly banned due to safety reasons.)

@@festol1 it’s basically impossible to stall the cars now. Back then, they didn’t have paddle shifters either. A fully manual transmission, not a steering wheel that looks like it came with a PlayStation.

i had never watched an F1 race before 2020 and boyfriend showed me one, i was FLOORED by how fast the pit stops were, i don’t even understand what has changed and improved to make it that insanely fast!! the only noticeable thing to me is the jack, and the sheer coordination of everybody

It amazes me how fast pit stops can last!! My dad works with race cars and builds them, so quite a while ago he liked to help with pit stops and he has told me a lot about doing the pit stops!!!
