- This is a Cerveny 4 valve bass or contrabass bone I bought about a year ago, the bell is just over 10 inches and takes a medium shank mpc. Since I could not use the mpc that came with the horn, I had Doug Elliott put together something for me and I think it works pretty well. Tonight was the first time I was able to spend some time on it as I have not had much time on it except for farting around with it. After figuring out what to work on, I decided to record this in a stairwell because the recital hall was closed. The horn is really cool, has a few intonation issues that I think are very manageable but overall not bad for the first real amount of time spent on it.
I think the bore is smaller and the throat of the bell is smaller than the cimbasso. I may convert it into the shape of one so it would be easier to hold. This thing weighs a ton and after playing it for about 45 minutes I was in pain the next day.
Is that a tuba mouthpiece you are using or is it a trombone/euphonium mouthpiece?
I had Doug Elliott put together a shallow tuba cup and rim for this horn. The odd thing is that using the cup and rim for tuba with a medium shank t bone. Only Doug would have that combination available.
What piece are you playing here?
Bordogni 23 if I recall correctly
Very nice! It's rare to see anybody playing a 4 valve 'bone. I have 2 in Bb, one is a Zazvonil and the other a Pavel Zalud, and also am having issues finding the right mouthpiece. I have an antique one with a thin rim and almost funnel shape that I really like, but the shank is too large for either of my valvers. In the meantime I am having half-decent results using a Bach 6 1/2A.
Hello if anyone is out there please tell me where to find it!!!
You should do what the principal Bass trombone player at Turku philharmonic - Harri Mäntynen. And my Bass brass teacher does - he uses ergobrass on all of his instruments. And he has Cb.Trombone in F with a slide.
I just bought the Bb version of this
I'm trying to find any info I can on the Bb version, as there doesn't seem to be any hits anywhere on the internet (other than Thomann selling it) -is yours the same pitch as a tenor trombone? How do you find it?
Hello Tom, I live in Brazil and recently bought a trombone like this and I´m strugglin to make the scale chromatic instrument, could you help me?
Exceptional performance.
Is the range same as F tuba?
It's similar to F-tuba but only 4-valved F is exactly identical. Wiener F model [Jungwirth] ,with 6 valves arranged 3+3 is more in contra- register. Many 4+2 F tubas has similar range. Usually 4+1 F tubas also goes deeper than F- basstrombones.
You know what I want now? A CONTRABASS SUPERBONE
sounds awesome !!!
My tuba teacher has german handmade custom F- Contrabass slide trombone. He played it just now in Alp symphony because conductor wanted more "Umf" to the end.
And that beast was huge with 3 valves.
Shame these extraordinarily wonderful instruments are rare.
But that thing looks funky :D It is like someone turned trumpet in to a tuba.
And sound is very round and aggressive. Penetrating. I wish I could write something for a beast like this and have it played. But alas no, they are too rare.
