Thanks for the video, I have just successful changed mine. I had my 22” alloy cut from under mine. LR quoted £1050 just for the rim alone. I managed to buy the exact wheel and tire (unused) a week later 40 miles away for £450 🤔🤬😡 (make what you want out of that statement). I then opted to buy the replacement winch plus a further protective device from LR for £204. The protective device is a disc of steel that fits between the wheel and the retention clamp. This should hopefully stop them getting their cutters to the mechanism. The 22” spare is now in the garage and a LR 20” space saver (another £150 bought locally on eBay out of someone’s shed 🤔) is under the car. If anyone is in doubt about doing this job, trust me It takes longer to watch the video. Again thank you for the content you’ve saved me some decent money but not going to LR for the fit
Thanks for the video - most helpful. Some toe rag stole mine. The total cost from LR for a new alloy, tyre, TPS sensor, winch and fitting was... £1650!!! I just sourced a wheel and tyre myself for £370, so will buy this version of winch and then get it fitted. (No surprise you can find replacement alloys on eBay is it...) Why LR didn't realise this was a risk at design stage is a mystery.
Do you know if there is a similar mechanism for a 2016 discovery 4? I know mine uses a cable system... and assume its still vulnerable to being stolen. Cheers vee
ON a D3/4 I would look at fitting a spare wheel protector like this one on the D3/4 forum, much better solution than the so called security winch. Contact the guy on the forum called RLD, he manufactures them www.disco4.com/forum/spare-wheel-protector-31159.html
@@L663 thank you but I see that not available currently; will check later Another question I have partly related to the same area, while checking the spare tire area I saw a circular 5 cm radius hole on the left covered with a net and saw connections probably to the subwoofer, I covered it with some material, if I ever cross water I think the subwoofer will get wet, what do you think about this subwoofer area should it be left open? Just had my third one go, even with the new winch from JLR fitted........I even stopped someone from taking one a few weeks ago mid steal........the method they start with is to screw two large screws into the end of the cap and then use a spider wrench to force it off, I still have the screws.........nothing seems to stop them Im afraid
This didn't work on mine, I have this version and had the wheel stolen, they broke the plastic round part before the new metallic one... I have some photos of you want to see it, but I don't know how to upload them here.

Ray from RLD has one for the D5 as well, you can contact him @: ray@rld-tech.co.uk. and he ships it everywhere and very quick! Even with the JLR protections, I would opt for the spare wheel protector from him.
It’s actually pretty easy, not more complicated or different than without it. Personally I can only recommend this useful extra. If you check the Land Rover forums you will see lots of positive comments and to my knowledge no one is complaining!

These are available from Land Rover - but we will add to our website shortly as we are getting a few requests for these.

What a stupid idea to winch a wheel , imagine doing this in a pissing wet winters night.

His guard does certainly look strong enough! although it would be a pain to unhook your spare wheel i can imagine.
