Fantastic Mr. Fox is such a great movie because not only is it visually beautiful, comedically witty, and full of charm, but it also managed to take the “main character grows tired of Their mundane existence and wants *more* ™️” storyline we’ve seen in every mainstream animated film ever, and subvert it! Giving us a profound message about how sometimes it’s ok to admit defeat, and accept ourselves for who we are, not the unrealistic image of who we think we should be.

The Canis Lupus scene has always been an enigma to me. What I believe is that Mr Fox doesn’t fear Wolves, but what they represent. Wolves are nothing but pure, unfiltered, undomesticated wild. Although admires Wolves, and the true freedom that they have, he fears pure wild, just as he fears pure domestication, as he is seemingly the middle of the two sides. Throughout the film, he seemingly begins to think of himself as pure wild, calling himself a “wild animal” at many points, using it as a way to excuse the reason why he stole from the farmers and endangered his family. He believes it’s his instinct, which doesn’t allow him to live like his wife, child or nephew. However, once he meets the wolf, the seemingly pinnacle for what a truly wild animal is, he learns that he is nothing like it. The wolf walks on all fours, doesn’t wear clothes, live in a furnished house or speak any humanly languages is truly a representation of the wild, something that Mr Fox is not.
this was great. i’ve always loved this scene but never understood what it meant. i’m excited to watch it again!

I read the wolf scene as the moment when he accepted that he was NOT a wild animal. He, dressed in clothes, on a motorbike, speaking a language, sees the true embodiment of the wild quality that he had idolized and the difference between himself and the wolf were plain to see. He lets the "wild" go and accepts reality.

I was born in 02 and I wasn't scared from it but my friends were but I also did watch horror movies with my mom at that age
scott lewson it’s not scary in the sense of horror movies but creepy, Erie, the feeling something is not right. And for a little kid, that can be scary and hard to watch. Horror movies rely on pure disgust and jump scares to scare their audience. Caroline is still kind of scary to watch

I just watched this movie again recently, and I understood it on a COMPLETELY different level than when I had seen it the first time. He's struggling with an addiction for better or worse, he's overly self-confident, and he deals with the ramifications of his own mistakes at the end.
The wolf scene I feel is about self-acceptance. Wolves are and will always be wild animals, and I guess Mr. Fox respects that.
It's easy to miss, but Mr. Fox gets slightly misty eyed right about "What a beautiful creature." Something is happening to him that he hasn't quite processed.

Bojack Horseman clearly took much inspiration from Fantastic Mr. Fox, using anthropomorphic animals and being creative with animation, while simultaneously creating very human and flawed characters with deep desires and personalities.
This movie is so underrated and basically no one talks about it. I also loved the book as a kid too

hey, thanks for this video. fantastic mr fox is my favorite movie too, to the point where friends and i have viewing parties all the time for it and a buddy and i recently started a fan podcast based around it, when i'd tell people about this id get some weird looks lol. this video though helps to articulate why the movie was so good and important (especially the wolf scene) which is something that for a long time was really tough for me to explain. im gonna paste a comment i made on a nerdwriter1 video now that's relevant. anyway again, great video

my favorite is fantastic mr fox which i think is overlooked a lot.... like, people love it for its animation and yeah it's absolutely incredible and i love it bunches too but i think it has a lot more character and narrative meat on its bones than most people think.
i mean, when you break it down, the whole movie has these recurring themes of an identity crisis. foxy "used to steal birds, but now [he's] a newspaper man," ash is ✋️different 🤚and sees himself as an athlete despite no one agreeing with him, and while kristofferson is "a natural" all the stuff that comes naturally to him isn't what he necessarily wants, as shown by his constant shrugs and even how the color palette of the film makes his blue and grey design seem out of place in a world of yellow, brown, and orange. kylie wants to be special and have a trademark, felicity wants to live a quiet and safe life with her family even though she was once "the town tart," rat considered himself a security agent when he was really "just another dead rat in a garbage pail outside a chinese restaurant." all the characters, animals who thrive in fields and forests and trees, are forced to live in a sewer system.
every character in the film has an image of themselves that they have a hard time truly being. when i first saw the film, i was just coming into the age where you start to develop a self image and discover what sort of person you want to be. and of course i originally just loved the movie because i wanted to become an animator and it was funny and whatever, but what i couldn't articulate then was how closely i could relate to the struggles of the characters.
the incredible thing though is that the movie doesn't just portray these identity struggles, but it allows all the characters to grow and accept their identities. fox starts a new newspaper column at the end and admits that hess a wild animal. ash proves himself an athlete, gets the bandit hat with the stars on it, but is still ✋️different🤚 enough that he's the only one drinking a grape juice box at the end (but he's ok with it). kristofferson is accepted for doing what he enjoys because he enjoys it, not just because he's good at it, and gets to share that enjoyment with others when it shows him, ash, and agnes all meditating together. kylie gets a trademark, felicity is excited about having a kid, etc etc etc. fox's arc can be shown in that awesome scene with the wolf that when i first saw the movie though was just a goofy little non sequitur but is actually a culmination of how mr fox has been warring with the wild animal side of his identity (his phobia of wolves) the whole time. but in the end they have a moment of understanding, similar to fox's new self awareness i guess. and then again these themes are reinforced in the last toast he gives in the supermarket where he calls everyone "the five and a half most wonderful wild animals i've ever met." not only that though, during the toast he constantly makes reference to things that either seem false, like they are pretending to be something they're not ("synthetic goose... artificial squab... even these apples look fake"), or things that are/are going to be undergoing a state of change ("now my tail is fully detachable... our tree may never grow back, but one day something will"). and despite all this, he says "we'll eat tonight, we'll eat together... so let's raise our boxes to our survival." the movie states that no matter what happens, no matter what sort of changes a person faces, or how hard they try to be something they aren't, they can survive and grow.
and i think THAT message is why fantastic mr fox has stuck with me for so long. a lot of coming of age stories i loved when i first got full of that Classic Teenage Angst ™ i don't really enjoy as much, because angst or identity crises are interesting on their own only so far. but fantastic mr fox shows this kind of theme so universally, from middle aged characters to teens to APPLES for cuss' sake! and then it arcs in such a way that it ends with a message of hope, a "you're gonna get through this" kind of thing without being patronizing, and that's what kept me coming back to it throughout my adolescence and into my young adulthood. and also why i think it's wes anderson's best film, and my (edit here) favorite movie of all time.
((also its animation is so gorgeous and it's writing is so funny and acting is good too and blah blah blah blah lol))

i know this was posted a year ago, but i honestly really liked the 2 episodes of the podcast, it was genuinely charming and funny. even though it seemed a bit slow at times i was never bored by it because of the demonstration of charm, and you 2 were constantly talking, always filling up space. i think it's a shame it got discontinued out of nowhere, i looked everywhere to find a reason but eh, i guess it happens. if you end up reading this then, well i'm not expecting you to bring it back (though i'd really like that a lot, lol) but i was smiling a lot through those short 2 hours and i really enjoyed it.
also happy (and early by like 2 months) 10th birthday to this phenomenal movie.
I think you just explained the reason why I love this movie so much and why it stuck with me. I also really wish their was a sequel to it.
This movie is underrated
I always find myself coming back to this Karsten video in particular. His voice is so soothing and it blends in nicely with the ambient and soft background music, along with the Fantastic Mr. Fox visuals. It makes for such a relaxing 5 mins and it's always nice to see someone share the same love as I do for a certain film.
Wow. I had my own thoughts on the Canis Lupus scene. I think that instead of him being scared to face defeat i think he is scared to face himself. He has tried to become something different for his entire life and separate himself from being a wild animal. He was this champion whack bat player, he became a journalist (someone who is different because all their opinions and ideas are always in the public eye), he has a catch phrase. I think that this scene shows him finally realizing that it’s okay to be yourself and embrace your inner wild animal.
You must be hyped for isle of dogs. Same art style, same director, same kinda story setting (Humans Vs. Animals), etc....
All I can say is that I'm extremely hyped

This movie just speaks to me in a way no other piece of media ever has. I've seen it four times since the COVID-19 pandemic started and I just love it more and more each time. I love the fall aesthetic because it reminds me of where I grew up, I love the calm, nonchalant tone the movie adopts, I love the story, the emotional beats, the characters, everything. Fantastic Mr. Fox simultaneously makes me feel nostalgic, long for when I'm the father of my own family, and evaluate who I am right now and if I'm balancing being true to myself while supporting those around me in a healthy way. This movie is a masterpiece and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that.

I love this movie, especially for the fact that every single time you rewatch it, you still get something new from the story that's being portrayed. When I was younger, I honestly had no idea what the heck I was watching, but I liked it because it had animals doing weird things. As I got older, I started to appreciate the style of the film and the characters, the designs, and the story. Even now, I still find new things that becomes one of my favorite scenes since the last time I watched it. Every time is like a new experience even though you already know how it ends.
And let's not forget how good cristopherson's theme was

As a child myself, I just want to say thanks. This video has the capability to change the way people are and in my opinion that's the number one thing a TH-camr can do. It's good that kids learn this things at an early age as it can change who they are for the rest of their lives. I've always liked bojack horseman beacause of this: becauseit teaches you that life isn't always perfect and you have to accept that. Again, keep up the good work, and remember that this video impacted someone.

Watched this movie last night for the first time. I somehow missed it. I’m 24 years old. And all I can say is I absolutely LOVED this movie and plan to watch it again tonight. I don’t watch movies over and over super often but I think this will be one of those movies for me. Wish I would’ve seen it when I was a kid.

My favorite scene in this was the “campfire band circle” Petey. A very creative and vibrant scene that had a little montage threaded in. It sums up the vibe of the movie very well.

I live in San Diego, California, and first watched this movie with my parents at the Gaslamp theater on its opening premier when I was 7 or 8 years old. At a time when my 2nd grade teacher Miss Karen read us Roald Dahl books. I've collected his novels and think Mr. Wes Anderson can pull his stories off well like no one else has before. He knows how to craft a comedy with talking animals with similar humor to the show The Office. I admire him for that. I own this movie now, but of all the times I've watched it, none quite so special like the day I first saw it at the Gaslamp theater with my parents.

I have pretty serious OCD and there's something about Wes Anderson's movies that put me really at ease. Everything is lined up right everything matches from one side to the other. The movies are great themselves but the way they're laid out really works for me.

This movie is hands down incredible. Its amazing how it was my favourite movie when I first watched it at 6 and is still one of my favourites to this day. I never enjoyed it less than the first watching. Canis Lupis, Vulpis Vulpis may be one of the most powerful lines of dialouge in any movie and yet it simply means: Wolf, Fox. Just a truly fantastic film
Let's not forget that this is based on a Children's book made by the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
I remember when i first saw this movie. It was 2014, when I was in middle school. My family went to the public library and something about the look of the dvd cover made me tell my parents to check it out. And after than Fantastic Mr.Fox stands as my favorite Stop Animation movie.

I pirated this movie when I was eight. I don't know why my brother taught me how to pirate movies, but he did. Needless to say, I loved the movie and it was a trip.
I also like how the designs are not overly cutsey to appeal to kids (you hear that Back To The Outback) and look like something out of a really old kids book.

Trivia: this was originally offered to Henry Selick,who has dabbled in the works of Roald Dahl before ( *James & The Giant Peach* ,1996),but he turned it down to work on *Coraline* ,released the same year. I'm glad he did....we ended up getting two very unique stop-motion features that year.
It's 2:17am and I was about to go to sleep but Fantastic Mr Fox is one of my favourite films so...
Coraline is my #1 favourite film of all time, followed closely behind by Fantastic Mr. Fox. So refreshing to see these films being talked about more!!
He's teaching us not to coddle kids cause life uncoddles them and it's violent and messy. & he's teaching kids about the real world and that failure is not failure. Not trying is failure. Rip that bandaid off Wes. Can't wait for Isle of Dogs

Absolutely agreed! I adore this film and could watch it endlessly, which I can't say for many other movies. One of my clearest memories is of seeing it as an eleven year old. I remember being so invigorated and touched by it, and when I looked over at my dad to see if he was enjoying it too, there were tears streaming down his face.

I’ve watched this movie 12 times in the past week and I’m gonna watch it one hundred times more, it’s easy a childhood favourite and is still my favourite at the age of 12 now,
This was in my option a great video that shed light on a movie I had seen long ago. You brought up points that cleared up some confusing scenes to me in the movie and explained the directors intent behind them as well as giving me a better understanding of the movie in general.
Then at 5:10 I saw him dancing in the front and that motherfucker dabbed and now it's ruined.
I was 6 when it first came out and my dad and i went to watch this film at our local cinema. Every second of that experience is vividly memorable and still lives with me to this day. Hands down my favourite film, which i could never get tired of.

Roald Dahl was my childhood. Having this film come out of just the few pages of a little storybook amazes me, especially with how perfectly West Anderson perfectly captured the Roald Dahl cheekiness😂

Ever since I was small I always would watch that movie and never get bored of it I could watch it nonstop for a day and still injoy it just as much this movie is some how the one movie where it has gotten me puzzled on how much I liked it
