  • Just some reasons why I hate being Korean. I love Korean culture and Korean food and Korean people, but I feel like sometimes there's more downs to being Korean than ups. Here's just a mini rant/something for Korean ahjummas (middle-aged Korean ladies from their 30s to 50s) to think about.

    I'm Korean American but my mom is Korean. I dislike Korean culture and I'm also glad that I was born in the US. I'd prob have killed myself if I was born in SK (I got depressed here, I can't imagine what would have happened if I was in SK.) The school life is extremely difficult, education is everything, and then looks come second. Yes Koreans are VERY straightforward (will comment on your looks) but that's just how they are. They can be racist but it's because they aren't like US, Canada, or Aus, or any other country with a big mix of ethnicities. It's not out of hate but mostly out of ignorance.
    I also agree that Koreans care way too much about what others think. It's all about your image, education, job.
    Even my mom has started to really dislike the Korean culture after living in the US for 15 years. It's really high-stress and not healthy for the mind.
    I'm not tired of being Korean (mostly since I don't live in Korea or have to follow the cultural standards since I'm in America) but I try to avoid having to be stuck in situations where I have to go by the cultural standards. Of course when I go to Korea I do follow the standards, but it's really tiring and stressing.
    I'm extremely glad that I was born and live in the US.

      I am Korean, lived once in Korea, and I can't help but think about how stupid should person be to write this kinda comment. All you're talking about is only negative & darkest sides of Korea, and you know, you say like you know everything about them. I am fed up with people criticizing them without even knowing what they actually are. Have you EVER stayed in Korea for a year or more? Or have you ever contacted with your Korean families and tried to understand them deeply? Korea has been developed a lot faster than other developed countries like US - the fattest country in the world that you love, and that is why Koreans are all straightforward and depends heavily on education. They think straightforward speaking could save their time and spend their time on something more valuable. They depends heavily on education 'cause all old people who run the nation thinks like "learning is the most important thing, they're like everything and we have to learn continuously so that we could contribute to making more developed country faster". I know US people do not consider this so much, b/c they're already developED slowly. And you know, Koreans may make you feel like they're racist. Some of them actually are. But I want you to know Korean gov't is spending enormous money annually to change ppl's mind about multicultural society, and I felt people really has changed. Our racist point of view was because we were traditionally one-raced country for about 5000 years not like your country of immigrants. You may as well do some research and understand some backgrounds of your illogic hatred.

    안녕, though it was so late for me to reply, cheer up and ignore ahjummas. previously i had similar experiences as you.
    i'm a korean with korean nationality. but i was born in australia and raised in two countries, philippines and singapore.
    i can speak korean, but not fluently. For writing, it's almost impossible to me.
    In 2013 december, when i went to korea for spending my winter vacation there, i had a bad experience in seoul.
    I was walking along the street in seoul, i saw two teenage girls around my age starring at me because of my darker skin colour(i have darker skin than 'normal' koreans because i love sports, plus i'm currently living in singapore, where there has tropical climate all the year.) so it made me feel discriminated by my own country.
    P.S i think koreans are generally too judgemental in terms of skin colour. I heard the korean girls do their makeups since 5th-6th grade of elementary school, which make their skin fairer. my cousin who's living in korea does makeup everyday when she goes to school. when she found out that i don't do makeups, she began to have weird impressions of me. she even made fun of my korean speakings.( including my relatives in korea, too)
    (And you can't imagine any makeups in singapore's schools.... they're too strict in everything)
    it's the major reason why i don't want to live in korea even when i grow up.
    Stay strong and always be yourself xoxo.

      I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I came from Korea when I was 6 years old and lived in the states my whole life. During my winter break in high school, I went back to Korea also and the same thing happened to me. I'm very fair skin but I did cross country and tennis so I had a very dark complexion. At first, I was hurt that they would make fun of my skin complexion since I didn't see anything wrong about getting a tan from playing sports but Koreans can a be a bit too blunt.
      Here's something that might cheer you up. Koreans, regardless of what you hear, they are very envious of people like you. They try to poke fun of anything that can bring you down to their level. They know your English is fluent and even if you're Korean is mediocre since you might use it only to your parents, it's a heck of a lot better than their English. If you stay in Korea for over a year, I'm sure you can be fluent, you will see many Koreans becoming very jealous and angry at their own inability to do what you have done. That is why they say such hurtful things. Korean culture is about conformity and when they meet who are unique, such as the ability to speak two languages, play sports, they look for flaws to make themselves feel better by depreciating your talent and merits.
      When I go back to Korea and if they see my tennis gear, they become intrigued and awe. Most are cool but every now and then, I still get the "did you do bad in school or were you trying to become a pro tennis player", and I laugh it off. I wouldn't be who I am if I stopped playing sports after coming back to Korea.
      In regards to Korean making fun of your relatives, the same thing happened to my parents. My father and moved moved to America when they were in their 30s and lived in the states for an additional 30 years. When they went back, people called them out and refused to believe they came from Korea. For goodness sake, they came in their mid 30s. Even though the language changed slightly and I'm sure that they had an American-twang for 'certain' words, they were made fun of. They brushed it off since they knew it was ridiculous.
      Heeji, I hope you give Korea another shot. Koreans see Korean-Americans as the girl who wore red lipstick at a bar. They stand out and all the guys are intrigued while the girls are annoyed. I know it might sound like I'm bashing Korean people, but I'm not. I'm Korean and very proud of Korea.

      +samshin thanks for your encouragement. i don't really hate korea, it's my nationality and a country where my heritage belongs to.my parents had been tried a lot efforts of making a korean friend to me. whenever our family went korea, they send me a hagwon (academic centre where korean students spend there to study) to integrate me into korean society but those efforts are no avail, as i was always ended up getting bullied by koreans because of my difference. I used to hate my ethnic korean race and my nationality because of all shits i'd experienced whenever i go to korea. i even thought of naturalisation to the english-speaking countries when i grow up, as i thought that i wouldn't need to go korea and suffer all those depreciation which is almost near to the racism.i planned to go to canada or other western countries for my university/college education, so i think the next time i visit korea is after finish my education.btw, are you a korean-american? if you are, when did you get your american citizenship?

    • @samshin
      @samshin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Heeji Kil Hagwons are difficult to make friends since it's can be more clique then their actual schools. You'll always find discrimination wherever you go, some more or less depending on the country and area. I'm not familiar with Canada but I grew up in California, LA. I think it's a great idea to get your degree in the states or Canada. I think it can be used in majority of the countries around the world. I am Korean-American or 1.5 generation. In regards to getting an American citizenship, it depends on your age and when you moved, your wait-list, and etc. For me, it took about 8 years. I know a lot of people who went to the states to find a job and after a while, they became a citizen. I know some who married Americans and became citizens.

      You should stay in Singapore and INVITE your cousin (and whatever your Korean relatives) to visit you, instead of yourself going to Seoul.... :)
      Even though it is all year sunny at Singapore, It is raining at times on and off, during beginning of year 2016.
      If it rains Heavily during night time, the weather plus the wind breeze feels like autumn walk in Seoul
      My guess : Koreans at Korea are Envious of you speaking English (and possibly speaking Chinese too) fluently.
      from a singaporean who can speak English, Chinese, Cantonese, Hokkien and Malay fluently and now. understanding some Korean

      "some of the points that she makes are true. Some of my friends are Korean and they agree with most of what she says."
      so, which points are you talking about? people judge you for being fat? the ahjummas(아줌마) judging? people are forcing you to go to college? they keep talking about "must go to college?", and people are so bothered by someone judging? and this all true. Don't get me wrong. it's a fact.
      then what about the other points she claims that those are the reason that she "hates to be a Korean" Did your Korean friends agree about that point too?
      she has the freedom to speak, and freedom to have her rant. and also we as a viewers have the freedom to speak about her rant. simple.

    There's no shame in admitting your personal dislikes about your own race. There are many things I hate about being Australian...
    1. No strong cultural background. Because technically the English stole this land, most Australian's aren't indigenous. Because of this I sometimes feel like white Australian's are kind of a 'mutt race'. I suppose this situation isn't exclusive to Australia (ahem, America), but it's something I struggle with when I see the strong cultural heritage of other countries and races.
    2. The consumer is not catered for.Everything is expensive, and the cost of living is too high. Also, customer service in Australia is generally inferior than many other countries I've visited.
    3. There is an overall delay in fashion trends in Australia. We're a little slow on the update. Melbourne has only JUST opened up a H&M and the locals are creaming their pants over it.
    There, that's me done. Who else wants to get off their politically correct high-horse and vent about their country/race?

    I understand what it's like to hate your nationality/ethnicity. I'm Romanian (eastern Europe) and sometimes i'm extremely frustrated with the people here and their mentality. I think it wouldn't bother me so much if i didn't spend so much time on the internet though... I mean, through the internet i have access to the outside world and i can see how people from other countries think and live. And if i didn't, i'd probably believe that the Romanian mentality is the norm everywhere.
    The first thing that bothers me is a really nasty conflict of the generations. I know this happens everywhere to an extent, but my grandma's generation for example grew up with the communist regime and they are indoctrinated hardcore. They just have a very hateful attitude towards everything: Europe, America, technology, capitalism, jobs, they are homophobic, sexist and racist, they think the state should do everything for them and they just have to wait for things to fall from the sky. I think they just can't adapt to capitalism at all. Imagine being taught history and philosophy by such people, imagine your country being ruled by such people...
    Eh... i'm gonna leave it at that, i'm gonna end up writing a book otherwise, a shitty book.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING REAL.
    Also, people are judged everywhere int he world. And everywhere in the world people worry about it too.
    And one more thing, I dont hate any part of myself, I dont hate my background or anything, (you shouldnt either, youre lovely, you turned out wonderful regardless of your heritage), but I do hate the country I was born in, for the majority of its so called culture: The Unites States. You know what your problem is? It's not that you"re Korean, it's that you have been westernized.You probably live in Canada or USA judging by your accent. Your parents want you to maintain your ethnic heritage at all costs , but you"re surrounded by other cultures and want to integrate with everybody as much as you can. I know how it is. It's happened to me as an immigrant to Canada. You want to sometimes change your name to Kyle or Travis but your stuck with your ethnic name, or eat westernized foods like hot dogs and burgers but your mom packed your ethnic lunch, and your Canadian friends say "ewww what is that" lol, which once they try it they say " it's all good" lol.

    I remember being your age and I know there is a lot of pressure, but you're basically saying why can't the world be different when you complain about how you're judged by the way you look and what college you go to. I've experienced many of the things you've described and the one thing that will help you struggle through all this is devloping a strong identity that you firmly believe in. For example, you complain about being called fat when you don't consider yourself fat under American standards. You're right about this, but you have to ask yourself if you TRULY are comfortable with your weight or if you see room for improvement. If you exercise and feel confident about your weight, the comments will be less hurtful. You will know that you're trying your best to look your best and they are only saying you're fat because 1. they feel comfortable enough to express their opinion, usually because they care about you (keep in mind that culturally, Americans are ultra-sensitive to criticism) 2. they're judging you with standards that are different from your own A strong identity will minimize self-doubt so that your self-esteem will not be affected.

Turns out that almost every immigrant parents want their children to be doctors because in developing nations the one profession that makes good money is being a doctor. There is this HUGE pressure to push your child to enter medicine school. An unhealthy pressure. As if there is no way you could be successful in life by doing anything else.

    This is the problem that all Korean Americans go through. They all get to see how they are all treated like shit when they travel to South Korea. I was born and raised in South Korea but I live in the States long enough. And whenever I travel back to Korea I just get so amazed at how being just a little different can be attacked and insulted. I really understand that because long time ago, I know I've been doing that too while not even knowing what I was doing. That's just the way it is, and I personally think not being able to accept any difference is the reason why South Korea ranks the third highest in terms of suicide rate (1 st is Greenland, 2nd is some small European country and I think it was Lithuania or something, Japan is the 10th). And it is socially acceptable in South Korea to attack other people who do not fit the norm.

    The judging part is what seems to be the hardest thing in this society; Koreans tell me about it all the time, and it causes a lot of social pain and personal unhappiness for so many people. I agree with her at the end, that it's the main problem and the thing she seems to be rebelling against. I wonder if it doesn't come from the strict Confucian beliefs and the overly competitive nature of Korean society. Also, the pursuit of perfection and physical beauty seem to be national obsessions, so if you don't fit in to that mind set, you'll have a hard time here, or you just have to find a way to ignore it, which if you're a foreigner is easier to do, than if you're a Korean.

    and can I just have a good, open minded and intellectual conversation with a Korean? I grew up in Korea and moved to California about a decade ago and I'm open minded and get along with Americans. I despised growing up in a korean household because first, education, career, success in life was all my parents talked about, and second, hanging out with friends meant my mom had to know my friends' name, phone number, addresses, and if my friends were mexican or black, my mom would give me a stink eye and question me on why they were my friends. It's so stupid and im glad to be living in the states and look forward to moving out and living independently. Following my passion and doing what I love with the people I enjoy being around with is more important than having college and education controlling your life.

    I love how non-Koreans are shitting on her,while some Koreans can understand her view points. Especially some of the ignorant comments I'm reading down below. Don't be a hypocrite, like you are entitled to your own opinion, so is she. If she were of any other ethic group, you all would be shitting on her for being racist. Given the premises, she can't win either way. She made a video to rant, you don't like it- click the red button on the top of your screen, or move to another video! :) Sure some things might be overgeneralised in some aspects, but that doesn't mean you can say hurtful slurs. Listen to what she said in the first of her video, she makes a disclaimer for crying out loud!

    In Eastern culture, you're made to study and work relentlessly, and don't ever make time for personal free time, let alone family. They can be extremely pre-judgemental, narcissistic, arrogant and have high standards. They only seem care about money, social status, what others think about them, how they conduct themselves on a personal note, and everything else is underneath all of that. Western culture is more relaxed, you're free to make your own choices, your parents don't have a say in your own life choices, mostly everyone treats each other as mates, you can get a good job without needing to study like a maniac, family and friends are the most important things you'll ever have in life, and you use respect as a code of ethics to live by. You could have all the f**king money in the world, but if you don't have the love and respect, the money is not gonna mean shit, people will just walk all of you 😟

    Whatever you say girl. Its so dull of you to make a video like this and upload in TH-cam if you really are Korean. The title of the video totally sucks. How could say that, 'some reasons why I hate being Korean' if you really love Korea. I don't think you love Korea. If you'd truly love Korea the you'd put the title like, 'things I don't like while living in Korea' , Bad practices I noticed in Korea etc. Your title really hurt any Patriotic Korean hate. You can find some bad practices, awkward things, bad people, Superstitious, boastful, judgmental, unreasonable, illogical people everywhere in the world. Some of the things you mentioned are truth. But It depends on person you meet. All Korean women are not like your mom for sure. I have been studying about Koreans from last year. And I know there are some things in Korea which are not very good. But its shame on you to say that you hate being Korean for that common reason. There is no place in the world where you find everyone very civilized, wise, open minded and eco- friendly. There lives many superstitious, uncivilized, backward people in the country where I'm originally from but I still love my country more than anyone, anything and any country in the world. Now I'm living in Korea . I came here some 15 days ago. I work in some manufacturing company in some village in Korea. I found my company manager very conceited, selfish and rude. I have never seen him smile since I have started to work in company. I can't judge other Koreans considering my manager. Cause I have seen many smiling people, helpful, kind, polite and very civilized Korean people at my work place and in my nearby town.So you can't generalize from your few experiences girl... I think Korea is a very beautiful country and Korean people are very friendly and civilized. But its very difficult to communicate with Korean people if you are not good in Hangukmaal cause Its like an herculean task to find Korean that speaks English. I'm glad to find many English speaking fellas here ..

    Simple fact. South Korea lacks natural resources such as fossil fuels, woods, metals, golds, etc and there are too many population crowded in the small peninsula. So the only way to be competitive and to survive in the international society is enhancing human resources(more intensive education). As time passed, most of the people got the chance to get education in high quality due to the social, technical progress and too many people started to graduate from college, dropping the value of human resources. Because of this kind of phenomenon, the fact that how much hard you studied really doesn't matter now. Everything is relatively compared, so you have to be special to prove yourself to the society that your better than others and good grades are just one of the basic factors. Due to modern cosmetics and surgery skills, most people nowadays are much prettier, more handsome than people in the past. Therefore, it's hard to be competitive in studying or being pretty than the past and the standards for both factors got way higher that it's easy to be below average if you just stay doing nothing.

    I'll give you a few really legit reasons to hate being Korean.
    Food: Yall eat the same food morning noon and night. If you've been to one Korean restaurant you've basically been to them all. Some places make it better than others but its forever the same dishes. OMG that's SO TRUE!
    Respect: Some Korean people force other Koreans to bow to them just for being older than them by 1 year. Everyone should respect their elders but a year apart is not anyone's elder. Don't even act like this doesn't happen!
    Language: Korean people who aren't fluent in English speak bad English for no reason: They forever reverse the "L" and the "R"
    Bran Flakes - Blan Frakes
    Break Light - Blake Right
    Prell Shampoo? PLLERRRRRRRRRRRRR!

      You just scratched the surface of Korean food... There is a lot of other food you can get. Its takes a bit more effort and research. As for respect, I don't see anything wrong with showing respect to your elders. I think its problematic that the older people abuse their powers.

      WonTaek Chung Korean food is limited.
      Ask any korean, What do you eat for breakfast VS dinner? Same SHAT! anyone korean will tell you this. Even Americans a barely 200 year old country has different dishes for breakfast. Any local diner menu will crush a korean menu. Don't even try to compare to a Chinese menu. If you had to write down every chinese dish you'd get a bible. If you wrote down every korean dish, you'd get half a comic book at best.
      I asked all of my korean friends just out of curiosity, what do you have for breakfast?
      They were all saddened by the realization that your culture is not as deep as you think. I've spent years in both NY and LA KTowns. I'm not ignorant, this is their conclusion.
      As for not seeing anything wrong with showing respect, I don;t either, that isn't even what I said. read what I said.

    • @PegasusVaporAcademy
      @PegasusVaporAcademy 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sangheon Lee Clearly English isn't your first language either. What I said about koreans is totally legit.
      German people say V instead of W and Z instead of "th" because in their language there are no such sounds, so they compensate with what comes the closest.
      Thats understandable.
      Korean people can pronounce both L or R
      Yet they CHOOSE to reverse it.
      That has nothing to do with 2nd 3rd 4th language
      Thats just called being an asshole.
      Feel dumb now? yeah I know you do. DUH!
      psssssss don't be all hissy cuz I stepped on your korean pride. Only your people reverse the L's and R's. are you going to deny that?
      All people have accents. but ONLY YOU reverse two sounds that you can clearly pronounce without a problem.

    • @hichomsky1
      @hichomsky1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry but I dont feel as dumb as you are. I didn't talk about Korean pride and I don't wanna be pride of it just because I'm Korean. I just wanna say both language are quite different. Fyi there is no R sound in Korean and that's why many Korean barely pronounce them properly (Even L is articulated from different place) and make mistakes. Have you heard Contrast analysis hypothesis?? Last stage is split (I'm not sure, cuz it has been so long time..) and L and R are just that stage for Korean. Speaking other languages is not that easy for everyone.

    Everyone has a bit of hate towards their own nationalities. This happens to Vietnamese, Americans, Singaporeans, Koreans, etc (this is from my personal opinion and from what I observed with friends I have interacted with). But at the end of the day, you should study more about your culture before hating it. There are actually plenty of good and interesting things. And if you hate certain things about it, work to make it better, try to educate your kids, your friends, your family. Don't give up on something just because it has some negative sides to it.

    A Korean girl moved to my city and went to school here. The first day of class she dresses up pretty, which isn't a big deal where I am because most people dress up for the first week. She dresses up for a month; hair was nice, make-up, wedges, dress/skirts. By the second month, I noticed she started wearing pants/shorts. I didn't really pay attention to her until like the fourth month and I noticed a big change. She started wearing sweatpants and big t-shirts, and her hair would mostly be in messy buns. She still wore make-up though. I had I couple of more classes with her and I finally talk to her about clothes. She legit told me "Oh I don't have to worry about it over here, I can just focus on my studies now".

      By that logic, anyone who is a full-blooded Korean but doesn't happen to completely conform with your mentality would also not be Korean...thus making all non-robotic Korean people....NOT Korean!!
      If you want to only force people to fit into one shape (I'm talking about social mentalities and not just about looks), the society will stagnate at some point.
      As much as all the little sheep people might try to deny it or crush those that resist, they are nothing without innovation and variety.
      I do find it funny though that I've encountered Koreans who seem to have strong anti-China/communist mentality when China has a strong "country united as one" nationalistic mentality...and then you witness these moronic Koreans online continuously attack other Koreans who say anything against this one design for "Korean people" as the government, media, business and their little puppet people are clinging onto.
      Are you scared your world might shatter or something? ^,^

    • @TheYoungOne96
      @TheYoungOne96 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "your mentality"? I never mentioned anything about my mentality; I do not understand why you bring that up. Of course not all Koreans are of the same mentality, but their society and culture have a basic structure and guideline that most of them follow.
      "If you want to only force people to fit into one shape (I'm talking about social mentalities and not just about looks), the society will stagnate at some point." Society will stagnate? Society will stop? Cease to move? What are you trying to say? That statement is pretty vague. And what does this have to do with anything? Are you saying that my wanting to "force people to fit into one shape" would somehow cause the society to "stagnate"? Uhh okay?
      "As much as all the little sheep people might try to deny it or crush those that resist, they are nothing without innovation and variety." Are you getting this from some random book? Why are you spouting random things that don't relate to the subject at hand?
      Explain to me how I am "attacking" her. I stated that she is American, because her mindset is American, she lived in America for most/all her life and went to an American school. "Koreans online continuously attack other Koreans" What makes you so sure I'm Korean? And the woman who typed this comment is Russian. The girl in this video is American, so it would be an American ranting about Korean culture.
      And you just overgeneralized China's mentality, even though you previously implied that a country has diverse mentalities. Come on. If you want to only force people to fit into one shape, the society will stagnate at some point. ;)
      "Are you scared your world might shatter or something?" Are you expecting me to answer that, since you OBVIOUSLY know I'm a Korean, and I somehow represent the whole Korean population's thoughts?

    안녕!
    I was adopted as a baby. I grew up in Sweden to ethnically (white, vit, 하얀) parents.
    My sister was also adopted. She is 5 years older than me but we are not biological siblings. My parents are blue collar workers so we have lived a comfortable but not spoiled life.
    None of us thought about our heritage until we were 19-20 years old. My sister then moved to HK and studied mandarin for a year. Thereafter she moved to Bejing to attend university (a non prestigious university) for her bachelor degree, which our parents obviously took hard. Today she works in HK, has a senior position at a redeemed financial services firm and can speak swedish, english and mandarin.
    My sister's nationality is Swedish. Her ethnicity is Korean. She lives in HK and dates a British Mainland Chinese.
    I started to study korean by myself at the age of 21. Since Sweden is such a small country and there weren't (aren't) many koreans living here, finding language courses was nearly impossible. And living far away from the capital made it so. All of my friends were ethnically Swedish, so I didn't know any koreans personally.
    All there was left to do was to teach myself. Next year I will finish my bachelor in business from one of the top universities in Sweden and thereafter take a full year to study Korean in Seoul. After that I am planning to apply for a master degree at SNU.
    My nationality is Swedish. My ethnicity is Korean. I live in Sweden, I am dating a Taiwanese but want to learn Korean and get to know the culture more.
    I am writing this to any other fellow that happened to end up here and read most of these rather unpleasant comments about "this" and "that" by all the people that just have to put labels on EVERYTHING. Apparently the world to many here seems to be something static while I choose to see it as something completely transparent.
    Because I was really hurt by a lot of these comments here, I just want to remind whoever who may also end up here, you who may not fin into any of these categories, that what you make of your life shouldn't be decided by what other people think is correct. Be humble, disciplined, kind and hard-working and things will turn out well :)
    Adios!

Oh and Korean parents will never stop bragging about you if you get accepted into an Ivy lol. My cousin was accepted to a UC and my aunt told me to tell my friends and brag that my cousin got into a good college and how successful he was gonna be. Korea is the most known example of economic success in the world. In the 50s it was destroyed now it is an economic power. I am Brazilian. My country was independent in 1822, never took part in wars, no natural disasters, perfect weather, but look at Brazil now: slum covered cities, epidemic crime rates, high corruption and 50% of people are functionally illiterate. All countries have bad points but Korea has better points than most countries. Be proud of it! And by the way you are beautiful.

    I feel you on the judgement culture. My students hate it, the younger teachers at my school hate it, and I hate it. I love my personal relationships with Koreans, but when anything about "life-decisions" come into the picture then it's all about competition and "I'm better than you are!" instead of being happy and living a happy life. It's a cultural issue and kids have a lot of pressure from parents and the older generation to fit the cultural norms. I get off easy because I don't have a Korean bloodline. I speak Korean, but Koreans are usually just delighted that I can talk with them. I don't like the work atmosphere in the big city I'm in, though. It's too judgmental. I felt judged for going to the restroom during my first month at my new job. I never had that problem in the small towns....just the big city I moved to. I miss living in rural Korea.

    I think its more about the general perspectives that older people have in korea.
    The reason why korean so care about education is because the old have seen a whole thing like how korea have been developing extremely fast with there eyes. Like 60 or 70 years ago, Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world after war. The world described korea "hopeless". Yes korea was completely devastated. Even back then, North korea was way ahead of south korea. But now, we are one of the countries joining G20, giving help the developing country.
    South korea have absolutely no nature resource (but north have a lot}
    No nature resource, way small land, having own language which makes it isolated when it comes to communication. So how we are where we are now having big multinational company like Samsung, LG, and Hyundai ?
    EDUCATION. the old who has seen it believe that education is the way to success. But nowadays more and more young generation is realizing to make it different.
    There's always the reason why they have culture whether it is bad or good and we are here to make a better life.

I went to korea to visit my cousins and at night I wanted to go out for a walk with my cousin sister, but then she suddenly sat down and started putting on makeup (it was like 10 o clock). I asked her why are you putting on make up and she was like "well, if I go out without my makeup and meet my friends, they will start talking behind my back and saying how different I look without my makeup"...

    Seriously? they are just different. You don't have to say like you hate them or something. First, when it comes to collage, Every family in korea has different perspectives. For some, its okay not go as well. In my opinion, i think unless you have a certain thing you would like to do or specific dream you want to achieve in the future, you should go to collage so you might find out what you would like to do and make it easier to achive it in the future. If you see ALL the people who went to top ranked universities in the world, they are all hard working. They worked hard to be the best so they studied more than 6hours in a day. I think they are very passionate and we should learn it from them. Please don't generalize it.

    I totally understand what you're feeling. I'm Korean and I study in the UK and it is very obvious that Korean people do think differently from Westerners. However, I think the best thing to is to simply try and adapt to it because you can't change your ethnicity. Believe it or not, I find the "Korean" ways of thinking really weird too, but there's nothing you can do to change it. It would be nice if their attitudes towards stuff (criticising people, for example) turned 180 degrees straight away, but this is highly unlikely, if not impossible. To sum up, just try and get used to it - you'ill be just fine.

  • @Wayfinderss
    @Wayfinderss 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I understand what you are saying. Your parents and many Korean people around may have made you feel bad and hurt you.
    But that doesn't mean you have to hate being Korean. Don't stop hanging out with other Korean people just because they are Korean. And don't start hating all other Korean people because they are Korean and you just hate the way you are being treated. That is plain bullshit.
    And you know sometimes its okay to accept criticism. If someone says your fat just reply "yeah i could loose a few pounds" or "thanks for telling me. I'll watch what I eat and exercise more." You talk about "it doesn't matter what people say about you" but aren't you contradicting yourself? You're LETTING those things affect YOU.
    So maybe there are a couple downs in Korean culture and family lifestyle. But there are always ups and downs in every ethnic group. In families as well.
    You can hate your culture. You can hate the way you are being treated. But you should not hate other Korean people just because of those things. You seem to be an intelligent person but don't let your feelings justify your behavior all the time, especially if it's hate. Don't let your anger control your judgement of others. Appreciate your culture and don't let those things affect how you want to live.

    As being a Yuuhakseng (foreign student from Korea) for 10 years, the problems of korean americans come from this: they don't belong anywhere. They can't be Korean but nor they can be American. So they form a society with themselves (korean american society) and start looking for someone to blame. They usually have no guts to stand against typical American society. So they start blaming Korea and its culture as if they are the reason why they live in such a low life. In order to be away from such low quality life, they become zealous and pretend to have faith in Jesus Christ and they become protestant not knowing what protestant means. They are usually sanctimonious. Because their parents have hard working condition such as running a deli, nailshop, or cleaner, their children have less chance to have a happy family atmosphere. It is okay to live without silver spoon, but there's no reason to hate anybody else. trust your friends even if they're white, black, hispanic, or even korean. They are always ready to fit you into their circle if you have a slightest mind to open.....

  • @cindym.3821
    @cindym.3821 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Being Asian American myself, I empathize with what you experience. You are obviously aware of the aspects of the Korean culture which do not coincide with some of your personal beliefs being raised in American society. I suggest that, instead of hating the difference, you recognize that there are just traits you do and do not find agreeable about either because one and the other are not the same. Rather than hate things you can't change, just realize that those "negative" aspects are a result of different cultural values which you can choose to be aware of, but not personally believe in or allow to define how you should be.

      It has more to do with their culture of conformity than you. One of my female Korean friends likes the way black guys look -- Her grandmother told her that she could only marry someone with a bloodline from the Joseon dynasty. The darker your skin here, the more they dislike the way you look....If you're too white then they also dislike the way you look...they like *slightly white/brown* the most. I wonder if they realize why the women have lighter skin than the Korean men do? Anyway, there's some Korean girl out there who would like you....but her parents and grandparents would most likely disapprove. Oh yeah! I've met Korean girls who were dating guys from Mexico. They were in Seoul, and spent most of their time near some of the Mexican bar/restaurant areas. They have a Spanish language exchange at some of those places every week. Anyway, racism in any form sucks. Korea is still pretty much homogeneous so there's still a lot of racism that goes unchecked here. It's changing....slowly....but changing.

    I love being korean... I love the culture, foods..... But then I feel pressured and upset because now so many girls from our region has gone under the knives, everyone assumes Korean girls to have done plastic surgery. I'm now stressed to tell other acquaintances or anyone that I'm Korean, because they directly assumes that I've fixed my appearances when I did not.

      Yeahhh I think they don't consider it's rude. Rude people.. As you know S.Korea have a lot of natural beauties, too especially top celebrities. Like Kimtaehee, kimyunah, kimminjung , songhaegyo,kimheesun,leeyoungae, Parkshinhae, and so many...
      But china and japan's Top celeb like panbingbing, Kimura Takuya have done PS. So annoying. Only Asian ask about that.. Even though their people came to Korea to get P.S. Chinese take 40percent .
