As a 2 handicap 25 years ago at Pinehurst #2 after a tournament, I shot 90. Hit 1 GIR. Had 1 up & down. I was just off the green on 16 holes chipping for birdie.
As a 15 handicap I would love to play in the masters as a reference for how good the actual pros are. Kinda like putting an average guy in Olympic events
These guys have no idea what a fifteen handicapper looks like. Playing strict rules of golf, playing 7,500 yards, a 15 handicapper is 50/50 to break 150.
Legit. I’m a +2 and I would bet in masters conditions I would have a hard time to break 90. Don’t think people understand just how difficult putting is on greens that fast
I never played Augusta, but back in the 80s a friend and I got to play a PGA course a few weeks after they had the event there and both of the shot between 95 and 100 and we consider that a huge win.
I think you and they are wrong. They don't understand how good they are, how average a 15-handicapper is, and how hard tournament courses are for normal punters. I think the real total would be closer to 120. A 15-handicapper doesn't shoot mid-80s regularly, often they'd be into the 90's, sometimes more. Then there is the course being in tournament trim, a completely different beast, let alone the natural difficulty of a course like Augusta. To get close to 100, they'd need to par close to half the holes on one of the most difficult courses in the world.
My dad met a guy who he thought was exceptional at golf. He asked the guy why he doesnt consider trying to go professional. The guys just laughed and pointed out that the professional guys would make him look like an amateur. The gap in skill is just so huge.
In my day, I was a pretty good club golfer. I won a few club championships and got 2 city championships. At my best, I had a 1.6 handicap. Now mind you, the courses I played were not hard, demanding courses like on the PGA Tour. I was lucky to play Merion, TPC Sawgrass, Medina, East Lake, Atlanta Country Club, Winged Foot, Westchester CC, TPC River Highlands. My group won the Monday Pro-am at River Highlands. You think you're good until you play these courses. I shot in mid 80's and 90's. We're no match for those types of courses. At Merion, I'd miss the fairway, and from 4 to 5 inch thick, rough, it was a wedge back to the fairway. The green speeds and the harsh rough separate us from the big boys. Respect for pro golfers. A 15 handicap would shoot at least 125 to 140 at Augusta.
Thank you! It was driving me mad. A 15 handicap gets that 15 from his best 8 out of 20 last rounds. So he is hitting high 80s... during his best rounds!!!! On average they are probably hitting mid 90s. Then add the distance, the pressure, the contours, the speed of the greens,... I would take the over on 120 without hesitation.
This first number that hit me was 115. After listening to Larry Mize about the pure adrenalin flowing through my blood if I ever had the chance to play Augusta, I have revised my estimate--130.
Theres this Arnold Palmer designed, former PGA Tour course nearby where I live. Its always viewed as a tough but manageable course, youll shoot a few shots higher there. But once they set it up difficult just for fun and my God was it tough. Just by growing out rough, speeding up the greens and fairways and setting up pins and tee boxes differently than normal, it added nearly 10 shots to everyones score
For reference my buddy who’s a 2 index played pinehurst #2, the Tuesday after the us Open when the fairways and greens weren’t as fast and firm, from the tournament tees. He shot a 95 And he normally shoots 75. So a 15 that normally shoots 90 is not breaking 100 under tournament conditions at Augusta
They wouldn’t get close to 100. My buddy Casey Won the 2006 Publinx over Anthony Kim and got an invite to the Masters. He was probably a +4 or so at the time and shot 87 the first day. A fifteen handicap would get destroyed.
I think the last group out on every tournament at least until the cut should be a amateur group of locals including a scratch 5, 10 and 15 handicap. Could be a lottery system. Would give a cool idea of how hard tournament play actually is
15 handicapper here. I’ve played Augusta around 10 times. My best score is 87 but I’m usually in the mid to high 90s when I play there. Granted, it’s from the members tees and about a month or so after the Masters so not quite as tough.
I've played a couple of tournament courses the day after tournaments, and I don't think many people can understand how much harder a course is in tournament trim. Tee boxes are further back and often off- centre. Rough where there isn't usually rough. The normal rough is worse than usual. But the biggest difference, the pace of the greens. So much harder, so much quicker! You need more control and more carry to end up where you'd usually be. Your usual approach shot is now longer and harder to control. Then trying to stop this longer approach on much more difficult greens, forget about it! The course becomes a different beast!
A 15 handicap is shooting mid 80 on their best day, on their home course, off the front tees.... Otherwise they are 90+. At Augusta, at Masters set up- 120+
Don't we wish 15 handicaps were playing the front tees. They are playing the back tees, taking 3 mulligans, 5 gimmies, and shooting 85 (101) hitting bomb 240 drives, 60 yards right. I wish they could call them the scratch tees, and not back tees. and you were forced to gamble, giving no strokes, if you play them. That might move people to the right tees.
It's not a track, no horses or race cars. Built on an old nursery when the property was about half the size. My family home is roughly 6-8 minutes away. Some of the shrubs, camelias, juniper, holly & azaleas from that nursery are still growing in many of the original brick homes in our neighborhood. We've had 4 badges in our family since the 1970's. Get offered 25-30 grand+ for them every Feb/March like clockwork by brokers.
Im off 15 and accept the Challenge . Play Thaxted Park in South Australia summer the greens are like glass and on some holes you need to put 20 feet away from the hole
I'm a 9 handicap. The only holes that I could reach in regulation would be the par 3's. Once on I would probably three putt at minimum and more likely 4 or 5 putt. So assuming 4 putt I'm 8 over on 4 holes. I'd be reaching the other 14 at 1 over regulation and 4 putt.....triple bogeys. So 3 over on 14 holes is 42 plus 8 over on the par threes for 50 over or 122 for the round. And that is assuming no bad shots. More likely 130 with a couple of water balls and a couple in the lumber yard.
A 15 handicap would really struggle with the distance from pro tees. Then throw in the difficulty of the greens. Maybe 110 if you played pretty well and smart. What's harder than playing the course? Getting access to it. Never going to happen for most.
Not sure why the Media always poses easy questions. Of course a 15 isnt breaking 100. I am a 5.1 Handicap. This years Masters will play 7,555 yards, the most current course/slope rating I see is 76.2/148. On Trackman, I played Fields Ranch East Course in Texas, the course/slope rating is 77.2/150 at 7493 yards, and I shot an 86. Im curious why the Media always uses high handicaps for reference
I'm a 15 handicap and I very rarely shoot in the mid 80's. I would probably shoot no less than a 125 at Augusta with a good swing that day. Several 4-putts and even a 5-putt is on the table.
I’m a single digit handicap and I think I would have a hard time. Because of the nerves of playing the Mecca of Golf. ⛳️ Playing from the Pro tees is no joke.
I shot 84 from the tips when I played there. I grew up helping my dad cut the grass with the other slaves in the 70s. Whoever cut the most even grass got to play one round with a guest. My old man picked me! RIP dad we got a black president and a female black vice president! You’d be so proud of how far America has come!
I play off 9. I played Royal Troon in average conditions. I shot 103 and hit a moving train. It was brutal. I should have never taken my driver out of the car like I’d been told. Augusta. That’s another level.
I agree with this 100%. I’m a 9, and I think I’d have no chance of breaking 100 from the Masters tees. I could maybe do it from the Member Tees, because it’s about 1,000 yards shorter. But I think I’d 3 putt so many of the greens that it would still be quite a feat to break 100 on that golf course.
I'm a 3.0 and average 250 yards off tee. Augusta in masters condition off the comp tees almost all par 4's would have to be played as par 5's. If I could average 6 on every hole that would be 108 and that would be a HELL of a good score for a 3 handicap. There isn't a chance on earth that a 15 handicap would break 100, I think 135 - 145 is actually realistic for a 15.
I'm a 3 handicap as well, and no way could I break 100 first time there in tournament conditions from the tips. Keep in mind that most of us play courses that are 5500-6700 yards, not 7500 yards. That's a huge difference. Plus, a 15 handicap probably plays the middle or up tees, not the tips. On the other hand, if you're 15 handicap from the tips, that's a different story. I hit it it around 260-270, and it's just too long these days. 10 years ago, I'd say maybe I'd shoot in high 80s, b/c i could hit it 300+, but now I would doubt I could break 100. I agree that a 15 hcp shoots 125+ minimum
My goal would be to hit as many shots as I could at the place because you know you’re only going to play there once. Imagine then watching a Masters player getting in a bad position and saying “Oh yeah, I remember THAT shot”
A 15 hcp will shoot 87 once every five or six rounds on a 6500y muni A 15 hcp will shoot 95 once every five rounds on a 7000y resort course A 15 hcp will shoot 105 once every five rounds on a 7200y championship course A 15 hcp would shoot 150 on Augusta the first attempt.
You and others are giving way too much credit to the course. 150?? It's not even one of the hardest courses on the tour. A course like Kapalua is WAY harder. Do you understand how insane trade winds are? and the elevation in hawaii? That course wipes the floor with Augusta. Now ok If they play from the white or blues which is where they SHOULD be playing from they should be able to shoot around 100. 120 would be on the higher end. But even then from the tips i still think 150 is too high. You're not shooting a snowman on every hole and even if you did that still isnt 150
@@evancole7214 yes, it’s a representation of your potential. On an average course, a good day will be 87ish and an average day should be in the low to mid 90s. If a 15 handicap is happy shooting 98-99, depending on the course, they should not be “happy” in doing so.
I feel confidant that a legitimate 15 handicapper playing the Augusta National for the first time, under tournament conditions, from the tournament tees, playing by the rules of golf, would not come very close at all to breaking 120. I shot 92 (5hcp) from the tips at PB. The caddy said 'come back again, the oh my God I'm at PB isn't nearly as bad the second time"
LMAO I took a 4 hdcp to Spanish Bay and Spyglass and they sent me home with a 90 on both days.
@@brbob4934 You did well, Spyglass is tough. If you're really into punishing yourself, play Pinehurst #2 mid-summer.
Play the same conditions as the US Open.
I've played 2 in August and it's brutal hit, but been speeds are slower to prevent then from getting burnt in that heat. Didn't funny it that tough in those conditions.
@@928frogman
My god did you have a bad day or something? I'm about a 0.3 handicap and I shot 79 there from tips. Even through 11, and then things went downhill including a triple on 14.
But what is more amazing is how good the guys are these days.
Since Tiger guys have started taking PED's and the internet has made learning golf MUCH easier than it used to be
Legit athletes, on drugs, with good coaching :)
@@paulcox2447 peds?...you are actually mentally ill. nobody dopes up on the tour. maybe if you were doped up enough you could take the club all the way back
Yes, these guys are on a different planet - a 15 handicapper would be looking at 120-130 !!
I’m a 9 handicap and I’ll take that challenge. I bet I can shoot in the 80’s. Just give me a call and find out.
I’ll need the invite so….I’ll get down there asap 😂
A 15 handicap wouldn’t break 100 around Augusta at 7500 yards with those greens if they played it 100 times.
I feel like this video only exists to make us want to play there even more
As a 2 handicap 25 years ago at Pinehurst #2 after a tournament, I shot 90. Hit 1 GIR. Had 1 up & down. I was just off the green on 16 holes chipping for birdie.
That place is basically an upside down bowl for every green isn’t it?
Would get right on my tits that would 😂
“Wait till they get a load of me “ jack nicholson 😏
Man I can’t even break 100 at my local goat track
I’m 17 h/c and I usually hit 90-95. So it would be way over 100.
150? don't be ridiculous.
@@kdids You have absolutely no idea how difficult championship golf conditions actually are, or how truly bad a 15 handicapper is.
I never played Augusta, but back in the 80s a friend and I got to play a PGA course a few weeks after they had the event there and both of the shot between 95 and 100 and we consider that a huge win.
That was my answer, so interesting to hear people who actually know what they're talking about say it.
With a local Augusta caddie, 110
My dad met a guy who he thought was exceptional at golf. He asked the guy why he doesnt consider trying to go professional. The guys just laughed and pointed out that the professional guys would make him look like an amateur. The gap in skill is just so huge.
The professional gals would too.
Rich boys talking about struggling to break a hundred on a course only few play
A 15 handicap is not shooting mid 80s most of the time. Maybe a 10 handicap
Lol, do you know how handicap is even calculated?
Yeah, because I have a USGA four handicap. Clear it up any?
@@iparrajorge Bingo!
@@charlieodom9107 You obviously don't.
They were being nice.
Played tpc summerlin in las vegas ... those geeens are stupid fast.
I couldn't imagine how fast Augusta is.
They don’t know that I’m just built different
15 handicappers with two mulligans a side, taking distance while giving yourself a shot at the green and 5ft gimmies
I would gladly take up that challenge! sign me up!
Shoot..i have a hard time breaking 100 on the local municipal course.
Larry with the nice guy answer 😊
That sounds about right - the conditions are that extreme and local knowledge is huge
Finally someone who knows what they're talking about here.
Golf is a difficult game these guys are the best players on the planet they are absolutely right 💯👍⛳
Im a +2 play competition golf, drive the ball as far as these guys i think id break 82 if i played good.
With a caddy... maybe.
I think the last group out on every tournament at least until the cut should be a amateur group of locals including a scratch 5, 10 and 15 handicap. Could be a lottery system. Would give a cool idea of how hard tournament play actually is
i shot 112 at Ocean Course in Kiawah , SC where USOpen was in 2019.....handicap was 14....greens are all domes
It’s wild how hard it is considering there isn’t even long rough
I would say 120 would be an achievement for a 15 hcpr
A 15 handicap is shooting mid 80 on their best day, on their home course, off the front tees.... Otherwise they are 90+.
At Augusta, at Masters set up- 120+
Don't we wish 15 handicaps were playing the front tees. They are playing the back tees, taking 3 mulligans, 5 gimmies, and shooting 85 (101) hitting bomb 240 drives, 60 yards right.
I wish they could call them the scratch tees, and not back tees. and you were forced to gamble, giving no strokes, if you play them. That might move people to the right tees.
I’d give anything to play Augusta National. What a beautiful track
It's not a track, no horses or race cars. Though, it's is a mighty fine golf club the size, scope, landscaping beauty & greenest overseeded grass on earth which cannot even be put into words without experiencing once in your lifetime.
More than happy to test the theory if they need a hand
Challenge accepted. Just get me on there
I'm a 9 handicap.
Id be pushing for a 99. Im just under a 15. I would want a practice round though.
I wonder if they know a 15 handicap usually would average around 92 or so
I can't even break 100 in the gift shop of Augusta National.
A 15 handicap would really struggle with the distance from pro tees. Then throw in the difficulty of the greens. Maybe 110 if you played pretty well and smart. What's harder than playing the course? Getting access to it. Never going to happen for most.
Sounds like a challenge, Fat Mark.
150 for sure
I’m a 13 and I wouldn’t break 120
Not sure why the Media always poses easy questions. Of course a 15 isnt breaking 100. I am a 5.1 Handicap. This years Masters will play 7,555 yards, the most current course/slope rating I see is 76.2/148. On Trackman, I played Fields Ranch East Course in Texas, the course/slope rating is 77.2/150 at 7493 yards, and I shot an 86. Im curious why the Media always uses high handicaps for reference
these clowns have no concept of how a GHIN index works....
Hard time breaking 100...on the front nine.
I'm a 15 handicap and I very rarely shoot in the mid 80's. I would probably shoot no less than a 125 at Augusta with a good swing that day. Several 4-putts and even a 5-putt is on the table.
I would have trouble playing just the Hole 12, par-3 in less than 100. 😢
My neighbor, (16 hcp) shot 99 at Oakmont days after the Open that DJ won, mid tee box.
I’m a single digit handicap and I think I would have a hard time. Because of the nerves of playing the Mecca of Golf. ⛳️
Playing from the Pro tees is no joke.
I played Waialae Country Club in Hawaii and shot a 122. Then again, I’ve got a 29 handicap.
I would take that challenge, get me out there
I shot 84 from the tips when I played there. I grew up helping my dad cut the grass with the other slaves in the 70s. Whoever cut the most even grass got to play one round with a guest. My old man picked me! RIP dad we got a black president and a female black vice president! You’d be so proud of how far America has come!
There were no slaves in the 1970's. Also, both Obama and Harris are mixed race. Most people in America are some type of mutt, including myself.
Sad to see your mentality has not improved
@@jamesfitzgerald6636how dare you! We have come so far! Stop being racist!
As a 5 myself, I would be very happy breaking 100. hcp 15 good luck breaking 120.
When pros say they must get the ball under the hole because of greens then you know it's tough.
I kinda agree with you. Even with a caddy, first time out over 100. If you could play a few rounds with a caddy... maybe high 90's
108 would not be a good score for a 3 handicap. I think you’re selling yourself short.
I might break 300 if I tried really really hard
My goal would be to hit as many shots as I could at the place because you know you’re only going to play there once.
Imagine then watching a Masters player getting in a bad position and saying “Oh yeah, I remember THAT shot”
The funny thing is nobody actually gave a straight answer
Fly me to the States, pay for my hotel, give me all the gear and yes, I'd give it a go!
A 15 hcp will shoot 87 once every five or six rounds on a 6500y muni
A 15 hcp will shoot 95 once every five rounds on a 7000y resort course
A 15 hcp will shoot 105 once every five rounds on a 7200y championship course
A 15 hcp would shoot 150 on Augusta the first attempt.
A 15 hcp usually shoots mid 80s??
No lol they usually shoot low 90s and a low percentage of the time shoot 85
@jwild5360 Larry is out of touch with the amateurs lol ive got plenty of 15hcp buddies and they're happy to break 100 on any course
@@evancole7214then they probably aren’t 15 handicaps
@johnnybgood7442 brother do you understand handicaps??
@@evancole7214 yes, it’s a representation of your potential. On an average course, a good day will be 87ish and an average day should be in the low to mid 90s. If a 15 handicap is happy shooting 98-99, depending on the course, they should not be “happy” in doing so.
Happy to be that guinea pig
Course rating around 78. You shoot your handicap one out of three times the 15 would be lucky to break 108 the first time there.
A 15 handicap has trouble doing that on his home course!
I feel confidant that a legitimate 15 handicapper playing the Augusta National for the first time, under tournament conditions, from the tournament tees, playing by the rules of golf, would not come very close at all to breaking 120. You might make one or two pars by accident but the other sixteen holes would take a heavy toll, lol.
I once belonged to a small golf group of close friends in S.C. I suggesting we pony up the money and play the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. A member of our group had played there a few times because of his job. He was probably a 15 handicap. He asked us why in earth would we want to pay 200+ dollars to loose a dozen golf balls and not break 120. And that would be us playing from the senior tees, lol. We ended up playing Kiawah but not the Ocean Course.
i'd be playing Stableford for a damn start, so there ! 😂
But would have the most aggravated happiest day ever!!!!
I sure would like the opportunity to try but we all know that will NEVER happen.
