It goes even beyond that, a master has a different level of consciousness and they can open your awareness without you even knowing through those levels, we have those levels already too we're just not open to them yet.
Dear friends, Before study and practise zen, I saw mountains as mountains, and waters as waters. When I arrived at a more intimate knowledge, I came to the point where I saw that mountains are not mountains, and waters are not waters. But now that I have got its very substance I am at rest. For it's just that I see mountains once again as mountains, and waters once again as waters. Can anybody explain above statements? If cannot explained, you still not enlightened.
Interested what he was saying about being in the prescence of a 'master' - it sounds egotistical but I think I'm beginning to understand that what the Swamis mean is that they are PRACTICED - in the same way as a great artist or sportsman except the discipline is spiritual, You cant play Liszts B minor sonata unless you practice hard your whole life. Dont even bother trying. Listen to the Master.
