    Thanks for the info. I'm just starting out and am trying to get my workshop here in Kentucky up and running. I retired a couple years ago and want to get back into spoons, all types. And I have fallen in love with the love spoons, and watch your videos over and over. Thanks for the help on the gouges.

      You're welcome Michael. I will have to do a video on some of the gouges I have but don't often use. Glad to hear you are getting into making lovespoons. It's a lovely tradition and you can put a message into your work, making it really personal to you. Let me know if you would like any specific videos to help. Happy love spoon carving, kindest regards Dai 'lovespoons' Thomas.

    I would appreciate if you would tell us what number of gouge you are using to get the desired result.

      Hi Michael, thank you for your message. I use around 20 curved gouges on a weekly basis to carve a wide variety of different lovespoons from unique bespoke lovespoon to the ones I sell here at our family workshop. Of that 20 I would say 6 I just couldn't do without that are in daily use and 2 (the shallow sweep No 3 Herring Bros and No 3 Addis) do more than half of my total wood carving. The tools are certainly important but you can do most jobs with a set of six gouges. The reason we have so many gouges is because i never get rid of a gouge because you can guarantee the next day it would be the exact gouge you need. Many of our gouges are only used once in a blue moon. I think perhaps another video might help to highlight what we don't use and why. Hope that helps, let me know if you need anything explained further. Thank you again, kindest regards Dai 'lovespoons' Thomas.

    Great video. I figured it would be difficult to pinpoint specific gouges to use with so many different types of cuts to be made. It was a helpful video though. I would like to add a few more gouges to my tool kit. Still trying to complete my current project, but getting close. Not to happy with it, but, we'll see how it goes.

      I have just been looking on Ebay Joe, some nice vintage ones about. Makers like Addis and Herring Bros are really good. I love working with the one that has a shallow sweep. You looked like you were making good progress the other day, always remember that often the things we're not happy with most wouldn't even notice. Good to hear from you, happy wood carving, kindest regards Dai 'lovespoons'

      Dai 'lovespoons' Thomas thanks for the info, I’ll take a look at EBay. And yeah, I know most people aren’t that critical. I’m hoping to finish the spoon this weekend

    I have a full set of 16 Marples gouges and chisels that I use, the steel is very good quality. Even though they are close to 30 years old.

      Marples made some lovely tools for wood carving. We have some too. The genuine Sheffield steel Marples are top quality.

    I look for any gouge made by any of the Addis family was lucky to find a whole roll of them some from the father and some from the sons. the story of the father who invented the standardisation numbers is pretty cool but its his son that was asked to move to Sheffield where the real story is at.
    the union boys thought he was a threat and beat him up multiple times,broke in and sabotaged his equipment,stalked his wife and children and even barrels of gun powder being rolled under houses.
    it would make a great movie

      We are probably bidding against each other to get them!! Hahaha
      Brilliant to hear a little more on the background of Addis, thank you for sharing the story. I knew about the family links between Herring Bros and the Addis family but didn't realise things got so nasty in Sheffield.
      Shame that these companies don't exist any longer. Great to hear from you, thank you again for sharing the story, all the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

    Great video. What are the usage benefits of an incannal versus outcannal gouge?

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Keith, great to hear from you and thank you for the positive feedback on the video. Incannel gouges are actually really specialised tools. In 50 years of handcarving lovespoons, wood carving and carpentry and joinery, dad has never actually had a need to use one. Basically because he has other preferred methods for doing the same job. We work with external angle finger nail gouges, perfect for the daily work of a lovespoon carver. The job of an incannel gouge is to cut an internal cut. I have never had use for an incannel gouge either.
      There is an interesting article on the axminster tools website if you want some more information about them. I have attached the link below for you to see.

      @@DailovespoonsThomas thanks for that. I will read that in detail, it looks to answer my question.
      If I could trouble you with another question, some time ago I purchased a collection of gouges which included a few (what appear to be) small spindle gouges. Do they have another use that I am not aware of apart from wood turning? Can they be used for traditional carving?

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome Keith. You're putting our knowledge to the test today!! We are useless with the correct names of things. Everything on our bench gets referred to as a chisel or gouge!!
      Had a look and found another article that was quite interesting in regards to spindle gouges. I have put it below for you to see.
      toolsforworkingwood.com/store/dept/WIS
      If you want my own thoughts, these actually look to be quite useful tools. Depending upon the size, sweep and cutting angle they might be useful for wood carving, even if that is not their intended purpose.
      We don't get particularly precious about tools and techniques etc, which I know will probably annoy alot of people. If I bought these, I would try them out for different jobs and decide if they were useful for what we are doing. Our chisels and gouges include micro gouges, wood turning gouges, others for carpentry and joinery. We basically use whatever feels best for ourselves to get the job done.
      I have found over the years some great tools over the years that were not made for wood carving but they suit the job, so I continue using them.
      I would try them out for different jobs and decide what you feel they suit best.
