ok so fun fact the imperial system developed over time through artisans-it's a measuring system that makes sense when you need measurements that don't require perfect accuracy but do require the ability to be kept in the head, especially if one is illiterate (which most people were!!). 3 is the largest number most people can reliably hold in their heads. so imperial developed as a base-12 system, not base-10. 12 is easily divisible through simple fractions, and those units often divide into quarters because they follow the rule of 4 units of measurement=new measurement. take baking! 3 cups is 3 cups, but 4 cups is a quart. 3 quarts is 3 quarts, but 4 quarts is a gallon. and so on. this applies to inches too, which divide into 4 as the standard. it's fascinating stuff once you get into it, but anyway all this to say there's a historical reason why your brain prefers imperial!

@fromcarlyb I'm from America, and most of our wrapping paper has a 1 inch grid on the back! It's funny since you like to sew using imperial, but I prefer metric lol I hate fractions, give me decimals any day!

@@hildywaddington8708 oooh I'm gonna have to source some of this wondrous American wrapping paper. It makes so much sense, because you could then easily cut in straight lines! Hahaha how funny about the numerical systems.

Fellow Aussie sewist here and imperial measurements with a tiny drizzle of metric perfectly sums up how I measure things while sewing! I hardly ever use imperial in any other aspect of life, but my brain just vibes so much better with it when sewing?! 😂

I'm 68, and I read Anne of Green Gables when I was 13, in 1969. It was my favorite childhood book, along with The Boxcar Children, which I read when I was 6. Your dress and pinafore are darling, and very well made! 🧡

My very first "real" book I read on my own at age 7. My mum was so patient, giving me definitions of all the words I'd never seen before - eventually, she gave me a dictionary, which was a game-changer. What a lot I learned from Anne! Still adore her character.

The entire book series is something to invest time and money into, it's a thousand times better than the movies, I promise. Wait until you meet Anne's children! Such darlings. And when Marilla adopts Dora and Davy the twins, long after Anne has grown up and left home. Theres a part with Davy that I think of so often, with him checking the roots of his plants to see how much they've grown. Its hilarious. The books are so special and if you do decide to read the entire series, I would love to hear your thoughts on them in future sewing videos. This is where true Kindred Spirits lay.

I absolutely love Anne Of Green Gables too! I have watched the 1985 trilogy thousands of times during my childhood and now as an adult. Anne just makes my heart ache with happiness. I am currently re reading the books and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s descriptive writing is absolutely beautiful. I’m from British Columbia, Canada, and wish to visit Prince Edward Island one day. One of my favourite quotes from her books is this…”It was November-the month of crimson sunsets, parting birds, deep, sad hymns of the sea, passionate wind-songs in the pines. Anne roamed through the pine land alleys in the park and, as she said, let that great sweeping wind blow the fogs out of her soul.” ♥️ I couldn’t think of a favourite scene because I love every single one haha!!

that down ward creasing is happening because the angle of the sleeve hole is too shallow for the arm scye/ armhole. its also fully up to you if its a problem or not! getting rid of the excess fabric wont always reduce mobility so if i can do it ill try and get rid of any excess draping but some times i just dont feel like it.
just because you know the cause of a a certain draping on the body, doesnt mean ur obligated to fix it

  • @vernieplummer5148
    @vernieplummer5148 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I noticed when you started cutting your skirt out, there’s a better way of cutting that I could let you know. After you get your fabric folded, don’t hold the scissors on top the way you did. You left a curly edge on the bottom. Hold your scissors sideways so that they are truly at the spot where the two sides come together. Put a little slight pressure there as you push the scissors through, and you will end up with two flat sides that are perfectly cut in half. If your scissors are really sharp, doing it that way you don’t even need to open and close them, they will just slide through. Just a little tip that I have learned that makes my fabric lay flatter and need less ironing. You are doing very well with this, and I was quite impressed with your French seams and your finishing of that slit. You go girl.

I’m a grandmother and we watched and fell in love with the movies when my daughter was a pre-teen. I have always loved those movies, and it’s impossible to pick out one favorite scene. And I understand you wishing the characters were real. There are so many books I have read that I wish the characters were real because they were such like-able people that I could imagine having them for a friend. I love all your sewing projects- this one was totally spot-on. My oldest granddaughter is your age… you are also a girl after my own heart. I learned to sew at age 16 and I’m still sewing.

Thank you for giving and showing the steps to french seam pockets. I tried doing this on a nightgown and couldn't figure out why it didn't work. It seems like it should be super simple. But my brain just wouldn't grasp it. 😂❤
This turned out really cute. And suits you perfectly.
My favorite Anne movie is the first one. And my favorite scene is where Anne meets Marilla and discovers that she isn't wanted because she was a girl. It reminds me of when we were first fostering our son. Long story short, we had parakeets at the time. One of them died. And because of the circumstances surrounding my son being taken away from his mom, he thought that whenever there was a death, he would have to go back to the children's home. So when he found out the parakeet had died, he went to his room, packed up his Thomas and Friends trains (his favorite toys) and came and told us he was ready to go. Poor little guy.😢
That Anne scene breaks my heart every time.

Me find the two biggest issue with printed fabric is the white back get visable on skirts and stuff when you move around or sit down. And the print is rarely on grid so can't use the lines on the fabric don't match whatever you do and make it look crocked something if go on grid on fabric or have the pieces cut out slightly off grid.

I’m curious if you’ve ever seen Road to Avonlea? It’s set in the some town a while after Anne of Green Gables, with some familiar characters. It’s got some beautiful outfits!

absolutely love your creation, this video, and AOGG. my fave is the first movie, the fishing for lake trout scene! (though there are so many good ones, it's really hard to choose)

I loved Anne of Green Gables enough that I named my first child from it. I have a Marylla (but people liked to add letters when they pronounce it) I loved Coleen Duherst as Marilla which is why I used that name.

IDK about Australians using Imperial, but I'm from the United States, and I use the metric system when millimeters work better than fractions of inches
Love Ann Of Green Gables. I remember reading her books when I was little. There was a line about wishing her red hair would darken when she got older, and I had the same wish...and I was so glad when it came true. She was such a great character for me to read

Love making french seams. Thanks for all the pocket tips. I have problems with sleeves all the time. After years of sewing you would think i can do them perfect now ..not. ugh. Anne with an E as well.

To fix your sleeve, unpick just the cap of the armscye., leaving the underarm. Allow the sleeve to droop on your arm until the diangle creases lessen. Measure how much you need to add to the cap and alter your pattern as required.

if you do another video based on the more recent show this time, though it’s not really one you can easily modernise, anne’s green/blue dress at the very end of anne with an e is my absolute favourite! though with period clothing you kinda need to have the right under layers for it to look how it’s supposed to, which adds another layer of difficulty in translating it to a modern interpretation that will still register as what it’s based on

But seriously, same girl... someday, I'll run away to Prince Edward Island and trek across the fields with a bosom friend.
