THE CHINDIA TOWER IN TARGOVISTE, THE CHINDIA TOWER OR THE VOIEVOD'S TOWER, THE DOMESTIC COURT

The Chindia Tower, also known as the Chindia Tower, is a tower built in the 15th century, in Targoviste, which is part of the Curtea Domneasca complex of monuments. The tower was built by ruler Vlad Tepes, during his second reign, initially for military purposes, the building serving as a guard point, firehouse, but also for storing the treasure. Currently, the building measures 27 meters in height and 9 meters in diameter. Between the years 1847 and 1851, the tower was completely restored by the ruler Gheorghe Bibescu, the current shape is due to him, including its elevation by about 5 meters compared to the initial construction.
The Chindiei Tower is the most important tourist attraction in the city of Targoviste and also the symbol of the city, specific elements of the building being present on the city's coat of arms, at the top, but also at the bottom. Being a historical monument, the building now hosts an exhibition of documents, weapons and objects that belonged to Vlad Tepes. From an administrative point of view, the Chindiei Tower is under the tutelage of the National Museum Complex "Curtea Domneasca" Targoviste.
There are two hypotheses regarding the origin of the name of the tower, but there is no consensus regarding this fact. The first claims that areas in the vicinity of the tower used to be the place for feasts, called "chindii", hence the origin of the name.
It has also been suggested that the name originates from the word "chindie", an archaism meaning "sunset", the time of day when the soldiers defending the tower were obliged to give the signal by which the five gates of the city were closed. After this moment, it was forbidden to enter or leave the city throughout the night, and the inhabitants had the obligation not to circulate on the streets and not to maintain fires in the open air that would have made the city visible from a great distance.
