- What can you say? Florence was the center of trade, banking, art, science, and the Renaissance. Don’t forget Italian food. We were lucky to be in Florence during Galileo Galilei’s 500 year celebration. The history, culture, cuisine, and art are spectacular. Museums are wonderful and the cathedral worth the wait. Florence is worth more than one visit.
The short list of Florence notables include Michelangelo Buonarroti (painter of Sistine Chapel, sculptor of David and architect of St. Peter's Basilica dome), The Medidi Family (European banking empire and four Popes), Leonardo da Vinci (painter of Mona Lisa and The Last Supper), Niccolo Machiavelli (diplomat, writer and philosopher), Galileo Galilei (astronomer, physicist and philosopher), Florence Nightingale (medical statistics and pioneer of nursing) and Salvatore Ferragamo (shoemaker to the stars and founder of luxury goods retailer Ferragamo).
