Massacre 98 the current state of ME is not because of islam but because of power vaccuum. Russia and usa proxy war in syria, usa backed suudi invasion of yemen, coup in egypt. Can’t disagree more. Yes banning headscarf was a mistake, but almost any other modernization steps we took were good. Erdogan’s party did right things, alongside with bad. They don’t teach evolution theory in schools for a decade. Do you realize what that means? Evolution is a scientifically established, solid process of the living. What about parents who has to send their kids to Imam Hatip’s because that basically dominated the schools? Where’s freedom in that? I think banning headscarf had mild consequences near these terrible backsteps.

Also, it's impressive that Turkey practically works hand in hand with Iran - setting the example of Sunni-Shia brotherhood. I personally recognize myself as Muslim not Sunni or Shia and I wanted the Muslim world to be united. Also, Turkey and all other Muslim nations need to be secular and democratic.

The last time I visited Turkey was in 2016. Only time I’ve traveled internationally, actually. I departed on the morning of the coup attempt, only learned about it hours later after landing back in Chicago. Still hope to come back.

Pakistan is the first Muslim majority state to elect a female Prime Minister not once but twice. First Muslim majority country to elect a female as speaker of the National Assembly and first one in the south asia to have female combat pilots in its Airforce. Pakistan has done more than any other Muslim majority country in the world but we also don't suppress the religious beliefs of people by banning hijab, mosques or Arabic azan. Everyone is free to practice his/her religion as far as it doesn't break the law of the state.
