- This Australian Opal is from my first parcel purchased from ADOpals on Opal Auctions website. This stone weighs 8.75 carats and is 18 x 10.8 x 10.5 mm in size.
Does this stone yield a gemstone? Watch along and find out!
(I believe this rough is from Lightning Ridge, Australia)

There you are Don , watching with anticipation
I hope you enjoy the journey.
That might be everyone’s favorite opal but personally I love the blue/purple looking opals. Especially on a dark opal. It’s gorgeous and I think you brought out the best in it. Nice.
a good blue/purple is pretty nice.
Nice one. Awesome blue color 😊
thanks Al, it was a learning experience.
Oh that color! What a beauty!
I think you did a great job bringing the beauty out in this Opal! 😊
thanks. It was part frustrating part rewarding and ALL learning.
The Blue Opals💙 are my favorite That Opal Guy Thank you for sharing the Beauty 😊
it was WAY better than I predicted.
The final stone is beautiful, it looked like a little bit of a tricky cut in the beginning, but you did a fantastic job bringing it to it's full glory.
I really had no idea, and only a little hope for a stone, just proves that if you try....
Great work keeping the stone as large as possible and it's a nice pleasing shape too! Enjoyed watching thanks Don :)
Thanks, sir. Maybe some day I will have the good stuff like you cut.
Hypnotic ❤ Beautiful polish!
thanks, it was a long time coming!
A beautiful opal from beginning to the end. The blues really start to become vibrant, with hints of green. Isn't it amazing how each stone is completely different from the next? Nature's creations can never be copied by man I think. 🧐
Don, on a personal note I want to tell you how much I appreciate that you leave many of your stones in a natural shape. This brings out the colors while simultaneously saving as much weight as possible. If I started working with opals, that is exactly what I would do. I would let each one guide me to bring its own size, shape and colors. This might not be in accordance with some jewelers, but keeping a stone unique adds value in my book.
Thank you for sharing my friend! I don't know why my phone did not alert me with a live session. I apologize for that! Blessings from Alabama ❤️
I will need to work on getting more ovals and other more sellable shapes but freeform really is fun and, in some ways, more challenging to get a good finish.
@@ThatOpalGuy I didn't think about the end of the process. That would be very difficult to polish in some instances. But, I'm just one of those who want a unique piece versus all the same opals in easy shapes to set for profit and/or sets. With this opal, I imagine a gold 'wire wrap' to suspend it so that all sides are appreciated. Which in most cases saves the carat weight and time, effort and money. In this case, you could not avoid the loss of weight because the sand was very deep in some areas.
Removing the cutting marks inside a concave section can be pretty tedious and you have to remove even more material to be able to get the burr into the center to smooth it more easily and for polishing.
I think Roy of RoysRocks is far better than I at this, but he has also had a little more time and experience at doing it.
Beautiful blues and greens,,, great polish,
I still can't get my head around the fact you do all this with a dremel,
Great skill set mate
I need more practice, still.
@@ThatOpalGuy not from what I see,
But we are our own worst critics 👍
I am really the only one qualified, imo, to judge. But maybe Justin @blackopaldirect has more qualifications? lol.
Nice video!!! Great color!!!
Thank you, I do appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Pretty green leaf 🍃
I really love that green flash.
Most excellent.
thanks a lot. thanks for watching as well.
Awesome .
thanks!
nice
TY, sir! I think I got a good result.
nice trip!
thank you so much, sonya, I really was glad it turned out the way it did.
Such a beautiful stone. Can we give it a name? I want to call it Earth Turtle.
sounds good to me. but its not going back into its shell.
Would an earth turtle, be a tortoise?
Hahaha! Earth Turtle or Tortoise would be a great name for stone 150. However, Don makes an excellent point. It's not going back in its shell! 🤣🤣
@@susanturcotte3176 way to pretty to hide in a shell😁👍
Enjoyed your Opal Journey.
thanks, John. glad to have you ride along.
Hi there 🌷
