That fairing is pretty sweet, but you can use that on another bike. I can't wait to see how this one turns out. I have a 1964 TR6 that would make a great desert sled.
Dirt bike Dirt bike Dirt bike !!!! You know you want to ! Looking forward to seeing the finished bike on its maiden adventure ! If anyone can do it, Weeeeems Caaaaaan !
Your moc up looks pretty cool 😎 I don't know if my old body could handle the ride it would be in the desert with that amount of suspension travel though. Reminiscent of Steve McQeen's desert bikes.
I raced professional motocross and flat track in 60’s-70’s. Maico, Bultaco, Penton, Jawa, Husky, Montessa motocross bikes and Honda 450 4 cylinder flat track. Amazing how fast Japan took over 2 stroke motocross racing. Anyway 2 strokes are the bomb for off-road. Usually only around 200 pounds with twice the power of 4 stroke/cc. Low maintenance with no valves. Low center of gravity. The lighter the bike off road the more fun. I love 2 strokes. KTM makes some of the best. 125 is all you need cuz of the power and weight factor vs 4 stroke 125
On the "pause": I would keep that one in cafe racer trim. Those aren't as common as they used to be, especially in the small displacement variations. And that trim kit is just TOO sweet... it would be almost criminal not to put that back out on the road in classic form. BUT, that doesn't mean don't go there. You can build a scrambler outta damn near anything, right? And it's an excuse to buy yet another bike!
I just finished watching the video where Josh met you for the first time. And how the relationship with you and Dave and Cindy from Forgotten Angels started, as I've been going through all his videos since November to catch up and know where he's coming from. I have three others to work on, including yours, to see where ya'll are coming from. Small world. Especially in swamp land down there.
Looks good. Are you going to put on K&N Filters and take off the velocity stack? Good to keep the desert dust out of the engine. Put some nice knobies on the wheels, paint and wire her up and let errr Rip on the Desert Strip!!!
Mr weems good man love all your projects but been waiting for you to go down the desert sled road on one 👌I’ve got a unit 58 350 basket case that’s going mini bud Ekins style i need inspiration to finish 😉👍
I was not sure from the beginning, because I think the GP was really cool, but looking at the mock-up, I feel Desert Sled it is. Another thing, if we look at Triumphs comeback in the 90's, what allowed Triumph to survive and grow, was the modularity of their components throughout the range (one single engine configuration, one single frame, a lot of common parts shared by the models). But if we look at these more classic Triumphs, we see that modularity is kind of a tradition on the brand. Used to think that Classic Land Rovers were the Lego's of motorised industry, but I have to say that Classic Triumphs are the same :) Good work Jared, and all the best :)
Put a TR6 head on it. Virtually all the Brit Desert Sleds ran single carb heads. Torque over bhp. Simplicity over ball ache when things go tits up. Norton P11, BSA A10 & A65's, Triumph Trophys and Tigers, all off road single carb motors. Cant ever recall a T120 head on a Desert Sled, TT bikes yeah, but different genre, flat track and desert racing different ballgames. Carry on the good work. Regards.
Jared , it wasn't uncommon for guys "back in the day" to have 1 bike and adapt that bike to race each discipline.... so as long as you don't cut the frame it could easily be converted back and forth.... I ALWAYS RECOMMEND TO KEEP YOUR PARTS.... "My Old Man" still races vintage moto on his 76'KX250 and then converts it for local short dirt track / flat track races.... but I'm just another random Beard on the internet so take that for what it's worth...
