Oh, God. I can so relate to everything you've said. I almost got a Krome EX in April 2021, but ended up getting the new Korg i3 in the end. I still second-guess my decision weekly, but I really wanted a very light and portable instrument that was under 10 lbs and that was dead-easy to use, where it would just force me to actually play more and improve my actual keyboard playing skills. I have a computer science background and a terrible tendency to tweak and change everything to death, and simplicity is a lifesaver sometimes :). I also find hardware much more gratifying than the plugins. I love Arturia's Pigments 3 so much, but it feels like one needs to have a latest gen 8-core CPU with a 3.5 Ghz base clock to really take advantage of it.

I washed dishes for 6 months at an Italian restaurant and saved $800 to buy a used KORG M1.This was in 1988, I was 19.lol Back then, you could buy the same keyboard and sounds you heard on songs that were on the radio.I used a 8 track Tascam recorder for tracks. But what you couldn’t buy is the production skills of a producer like Teddy Riley or Babyface. And you needed to pay at least $250 an hour to book a real studio. That’s why record labels had everything on lock and why rappers with dope money, were the only ones making independent records and getting record deals.lol
I feel you! Back in the early 2ks I bought a Triton for $500! Couldn't sleep on such a deal. It was from an engineer named Studio Ton (E40, 2 Pac, etc). Back then I was working at a cafe and just starting to gig. Man time flies. Great keyboard for the lab and live gigs.
Way back in the day, I had an Ensoniq ESQ 1, a DX7 (you can’t go wrong w/ FM synthesis), and Korg M1. Today, I’m still using hardware while everyone else is going w/ MIDI controllers, which I totally understand why.

I’m a Korg guy so I had to order one. It’s affordable enough so I had to. Now I’m complete. I got m50, 2 kross, Roland fantom, Yamaha mx49. And lord knows what else. Korg x5d Korg micro X Korg x50. Couple of Casios cause AIX is crazy. 5 MPCs. No more trips to guitar center for me😎😎
I thought for a non existing reason that SO wasn't made to make beats (Maybe because all the producers I know use Studio One to produce metal/rock). Seeing you making some really good beats using this DAW made me wanna try beat making. Thank you!
Yesterday was "Do it like Bolo" Day. I got 2 Workstations for the price of one new: Bought a used Korg Krome Ex and a used Roland FA 06. Together for less than 1200 Bugs... ;-)
😏 those Korg workstations very addictive soundscape. The Trinity the Triton Karma Kronos 🤯 no doubt yes hardware will always be my mainstay, as for the taking equipment facts as a DJ crates of records and JBL's in a SUV praying the shocks and springs held up. I always will be the Yamaha Motif Preacher in my own house of sounds. But as we know limited resources add to the greatest Creativity. I use to carry my MPC to the bathroom with me lol Respect and Peace Bolo.

@@Neptunejc you should look at the live2. Coming from making beats on the workstations, 2000xl. Its a DAW standalone with sounds and sampling!! The possibility’s are endless. And you can use it with a computer if you want. The technology on it is crazy. I dont think i will need anymore gear for a while.
You literally have an updated version of the classic 90s/2000s MIDI studio. An Akai MPC, a Korg keyboard and a Roland keyboard. If you had those 3 things you could make music for any genre.
That made me laugh. I also have G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and just bought the same keyboard. I don't play WHAT you play but this keyboard is going to be a great addition to the stack. I have had it for about 24 hours and already I know it will do WAY more than I need it to. So as I explore and find things out (like when a horn sound is an octave too high - how do I drop it an octave. I know how to do it on my old Ensoniq. I just have to learn how to speak Korg.) I am going to love this thing!! I heard a lot of me while I listened to you.

At least you rarely get ripped off these days with hardware compared to VST plugins or expansions where it's usually copy and paste the same 3 sounds, bought Arturia Analog Lab 5 for $199 and then that said want to change and create your own parameters, buy the V Collection 8 for $599, I never had to buy another keyboard to change the settings on it so don't feel bad, you're already making good use out of it
I stopped buying hardware workstation keyboards since I sequence in the DAW these days. I think rack mount hardware synths are perfect for integrating with you DAW sequencer in a hybrid hardware synth/soft synth setting. I already own the classic Fantom XR. I'm about to sell my classic 18 year old MOTIF ES6 keyboard and swap it out for the rack version to install in my Argosy console desk. I don't play keys in the church anymore so time to retire the MOTIF keyboard and narrow it down to just one midi controller.

Were you recording loops or using midi? Midi is way more powerful because you can go back and adjust the sounds without having to re-record 16 times to see if it works. You can just tweak Your sounds to your hearts content. Not to mention quantizing would fix up all that sloppiness :-)

I like grabbing gear also and im just a beginner engineer but just to mix my own vocals really. I upgraded my home studio equipment from the PC all the way down to the xlr cables. And was browsing hard earlier for more. But i had to tell myself a hundred times WHY would i do that?

Every serious producer is switching back. Even just to get something that let you focus on composition. I got a MODX, a used Kurzweil PC3 and an Alesis Fusion Together: Can everything my DAW can do, except youtube and facebook ;-)

I have the krome 61 original. It's cool , but some of my beats sound like the Neptune's now lol I kind of want the roland fa 61.
Yeah get the roland fa61 really nice sequencing and editing features and tons of sounds you can get for free at the roland site

Just copped the Krome and connected it to MPC One via USB midi. Using line out not getting any audio? Any ideas why?
