What was that infernal whistling which appeared to be coming from the SL1 bus? Must be very annoying for the driver. My immediate thought was that it was a passenger on the bus but now I'm not so sure.

The infernal whistling you heard was likely a warning signal indicating the SL1 bus approaching or departing a bus stop. It's a safety feature designed to alert pedestrians and other road users. So, rather than an annoyance, it serves as a precautionary measure for everyone's safety. Fortunately for me the driver switched off after while (that was after changing of the driver). Thank you for your observation and comment, appreciate it!
