I love the way Scott and Ian parse through their areas of disagreement and discuss & listen to each other’s views with genuine interest rather than trying to dominate and vanquish one another’s arguments. That’s hard to find these days

I disagree with Ian Bremmer at abot 7:20 . If foreign leaders announced that Trump is dangerous/bad/incompetent that would add to Trump's strength. People don't trust authority (in many cases for good reason), so why would anyone be convinced by what a leader of a foreign nation has to say.

It will weld existing MAGA base types closer to Trump. And the same for various D's and progs away from Trump. But the 30 odd percent of Americans who are in the middle...? I suspect this would influence a lot of them to think about the significance. Especially if it were world leader and a whole bunch of business leaders saying "Trump will create uncertainty and be bad for business" at the same time.
You don’t interfere in the elections of other countries - that’s a cornerstone of diplomacy. The fact that Americans think it would be ok to - in their own election - tells a lot about how screwed American politics is.

@@izzytoonsIt's really hard to say. "Officially" American voters who do not belong to any formal political party are about 1/3. But as you probably know as well as me... a good chunk of them just reflexively check the D or R box on every ballot anyhow.

Strong believer in "Grade 13" as I like to call it ... a post high school community service year (or 2). This experience at the age of 19 will provide connection, purpose, development and a spirit of goodwill to young adults in a most critical year in their development. This service could be military, AmeriCorps, Salvation Army, etc.

That's for soldiers that have been deployed. This won't be anything like that; it'll literally just training and learning how to take bullshyt and remain stoic, to follow orders, and eventually to lead. But, none of these will be deployed overseas to fight wars... the political will for creating such a system in the first place would essentially necessitate that that is written into its foundational guidelines/governance/etc.@@oldschoolpanels
Yes, I've studied military suicides in depth and have even approached the military with a transition program to help our service members. This is an entirely different problem that requires a different solution. Remember, what I suggested in the Grade 13 idea is a community service year. A military component of which would probably more likely resemble ROTC. I truly appreciate the concern in your comment because that's how we're able to see multiple angles when problem solving.

Yes, Ian, being against Nentanyah is not antsemitism or against Israel. However, maybe reaction to AIPAC is a reason for many being anti Israel, along with settlements in the West Bank.

The settlements are a major problem for Israel in many international eyes. And that becomes a problem for Jews elsewhere. How does that get fixed? If there isn't a solution to that that involves withdrawal or a major compromise elsewhere exchange for staying (I don't believe that option is realistic, but I could be wrong), they will not know peace in our life times.

There was saying in uk if you gave the defensive budget to council and put them in charge of defence there would be civil war in less than 24 hours . If national service came about each state would in effect have it's own army .
Would like to see the inclusion of the handicapped in any sort of Bill in Congress for voluntary service to the Country. Too many "handicapped light" individuals like myself cannot serve in the military, life-saving services, fire departments or police forces because of their affliction. The Country is passing on some real talent that could be put to productive use.

At 12:30 Scott claims something about a certain age group in the US, 50% of which "support Hamas"... I tried to find the source for that stat but couldn't find it. Does anyone know more? Seem like a crazy number/claim.

the antisemitism part starts on page 48. The statement "they support Hamas" is somewhat oversimplified, but it's not totally without merit
He conflates support for Palestinian statehood and survival with support for Hamas. Bibii's the one who's been supporting Hamas in that neck of the woods.

National service is not voluntary if it’s compulsory. That’s not to say it shouldn’t be compulsory, but let’s not get that mixed up with *volunteering* to serve.
Most US government organizations, including the military, don't want to waste resources on people who dont want to be there

Russia has switched to war economy, it´s churning out propaganda about destroying Europe. You don´t end that by accepting a piece of the country you wanted to conquer, and "that´s it, we go home and change our mindset". When has THAT ever happened?
I respect the analysis of Ian, but that is why I personally found this interview to be the opposite of comforting!

@@someguy2135 It's comforting to hear a series of thoughtful, sober analyses on these issues. Currently, everything from geopolitics to antisemitism gets viewed through an emotionally laden, ideological lens, which- naturally reduces the complexity that surrounds these topics.

I have watched many, many interviews with Ian Bremmer and learned a lot. This interview, for me, was one of the best I have seen.

It’s always amusing that people who didn’t pay for their education, and never did any type of service, want everyone else to do volunteer service. I did 4 years in the military as an 18 year old, and don’t wish that same experience on anyone.

“Algorithms do not replace nurture.” Ian said it perfectly. And we will lose democracy to algorithms if we don’t get off the social media train quickly. As someone overseas with the military, I agree that one powerful answer is mandatory national service, which can teach young Americans that more than their own self interests are at stake.
Democracy has always brought disaster to countries. It's the balance of power of govt and people that works best. We had that one, decades ago. We've allowed corruption to win over our freedoms

when they say algorithm they actually mean "monopoly on the truth". what the internet did is free people from the constraints of the system, aka. the gatekeepers of public opinion and let everyone freely express their opinion, and what happened is that ugly truths couldn't be hidden anymore - they were shared globally. now, everyone knows what's going on behind the curtain. we all see how rotten these would-be rulers are. the system still tries to regain control of the information space but the genie is out of the bottle... people want to forge their own destiny, and not what some powerbroker intends for them. i think this is just the start... we have seen nothing yet.
In just a few short years there won't be much difference between AI developed and algorithmically implanted thought viruses in mindsets globally. Modern White Supremacy is entirely an algorithmic outcome, though not by AI yet, but by bad actors creating and broadly disseminating misinformation. Real fascism is founded in racism; thyat's why words like "blood" and "purity" and such always come up. And there is always a significant portion of the populace ready to rally behind their racial supremacy and the need to protect it. The Great Replacement is entirely a fascist plea to maintain white supremacy, which is undeniably racism, by definition. Honest conservatives producly defend that. Dishonest ones pretend it's not so.
I am impressed by Ian Bremmer's critical thinking and honest answers to Professor Galloway regarding the complex issue of Israel and the Palestinians. He effectively addressed why people feel strongly and empathetic towards the Palestinian people. Calling individuals sympathetic or empathetic towards Palestinians as anti-Semitic without considering the issue's complexity is a cop-out. I hope Professor Galloway learns from this conversation. I follow him on Pivot and used to be disappointed with his views on Palestinians. Sometimes it seemed that he confuses the Palestinian people with Hamas. This was one of the best conversations I have heard this year. Thank you so much.

I'm glad he clarified to anti-Israel, not anti-semitism. I think students have been "raised" intellectually/educationally to identify oppressors and oppressed and react accordingly. Israel is the oppressor, Palestinians the victims. Obviously the situation is highly complex, but nuance is a casualty when a group reacts as passionately as we've seen, particularly on campuses.
In the specific events going on now in the war, it is understandable to be vocally anti-Israel. It is not my sense, based on what I have seen and heard, that Israel has done all they could to minimize casualties of civilians. And the Israeli government's statements have revealed a ruthlessness that bolsters that. They are killing children at an enormous rate. How could they not, dropping 2000-pound dumb bombs in such a densely populated area. This is an infanticide, not genocide, but infanticide. How many terrorists are they creating?

- These are of course important, but they happen on a much longer timescale. They were specifically talking about a year ahead.
I agree with Ian. Tristan Harris and the Center for Humane Technology have highlighted the risk posed by the social media attention maximising business model in their film "The Social Dilemma".
Bremmer's assumption that Russia will hang on to chunks of Ukraine assumes that Putin hangs on to power, which in turn assumes that the internal economics and infrastructures does not degrade sufficient to cause significant civil unrest. I would like to hear him explain why Ukraine can't wait out Russia until Putin loses power or at least has to pull back in order to address the internal issues.
Because Ukraine isn’t self sufficient and Russia is fine with draining the west of 100s of billion dollars indefinitely
Do you see any leader coming into power just to say " sorry, nevermind". Don't think so. Too many will say we fought for this.
Putin could live and be in power for another 10 years. Then another dictator takes over via corrupt elections. Who is going to just “wait it out?”
Putin's Russia is a bastion of stability compared to what US is about to become in 2024. In fact, many sane people might move there for that very same reason...but we shall see.
Bremmer notes that the latest Ukrainian draft is bringing in 45 year olds. That's a really bad sign for long term success. Russia DESERVES to lose here, but they have more people to feed into the meat grinder. I think Ian believes Ukraine will run out of bodies before Russia does. It's not a lack of will, it's a lack of men to pull triggers.
I understand the arguments, but I wish we had established a no fly zone over Ukraine 22 months ago. Or given them modern fighter jets and started training their pilots back then. It would make a huge difference today if we had.
Wow - Ian nailed the Israel/Palestine conflict - wasn't expecting that...
I found his "I'm not Jewish, but I've been on the receiving end of antisemitism, probably because I'm an intellectual and wear glasses" incredibly funny. Very self aware, and very aware of the image he presents.
And yes, I found his insights in regards to the latest round of stupidity very balanced and nuanced too. I often disagree with Ian, but I always appreciate his thoughtful points of view.

I'm amazed that Scott Galloway blatantly equates criticism of Israel with anti semitism. I have MANY very close Jewish friends. In no way do I associate the crimes that are being committed on Gaza with my friends, most of whom also oppose this war.

No, does not equate the two, he does the opposite. At 18:00m he points out that many people say there is a difference between anti-semitism and being anti-Israel, and he thinks it's a 'legitimate and fair point' they are making. So, essentially he agrees with that sentiment.

This is extraordinarily good -- so thoughtful. I'm an unlimited, enormous fan of Scott Galloway, who I think is the most honest, perceptive, caring observer of what's happening in America and in his own life story. So I say this with caution, because it's hard to make this point --- it is so difficult to have a nuanced discussion of Israel/Palestinian issues. It's also so important to recognize that there are actual, vicious, brutal anti-semites out there, and critics of current Israeli policy must denounce them and try hard to distinguish their view from these dangerous, terrible neo-Nazi jackasses. What I would try to tell Scott is that a lot of younger people are increasingly critical of Israel because of concern for the Palestinians... what are these people supposed to do? A two-state solution with the post-1967 Occupied Territories returned to Palestinians, provided they are willing (as some have said) to recognize the existence and legitimacy of Israel. But, as Ian Bremmer, says: it isn't going to happen.
I opened the comments to see how this was addressed. Thank you for introducing it in a sober fashion. It continues to “flummox” me that otherwise perceptive people cite pro-Palestinian = pro-Hamas = anti-Semitic as fact. I look at that as a profound blank spot. Without pro-Palestinian there is no peace for anyone in that region.

This was indeed a great conversation. So glad you said this, it was truly confounding how Scott and Kera seemed attribute pro Palestinian sentiment to negative propaganda and naivety. Huge blind spot but understandable because of the recent conflating of antisemitic and anti Israeli definitions.

This was wonderful to watch. I've never heard of Ian Bremmer, but I can't remember listening to anyone with whom I so thoroughly and profoundly disagreed with on every point he made! It was a great fundamental confirmation of my own views, and I thank him for that. I now realize that if a significant portion of Americans agree with him, we have more to fear politically than just the lunatic Left. Recently I have been lulled into an itchy complacency by listening to liberals like Alan Dershowitz who made me believe that there are still a swath of democrats we can do business with. Now Ian Bremmer has pulled the scales from my eyes. He made me realize that there is a sinister element of our population that can still probably define what a woman is, disagrees with gender reassignment surgery for teenagers without their parents' consent, thinks that legalized looting is bad, and that traditional education is good, who nonetheless believes that big government is the answer to all our problems. Forewarned is forearmed.

By ISRAELI MATH that means there are more than 2 million people who are Palestinian, and live under Hamas rule, but are not trying to murder Israelis or deny their right to live, exist, be a government or anything else!

If the local crowd is 60 to 1 normal civilians, not fighters, don't you think it's on the guy with the artillery to be sure he's aiming it AWAY from the civilians?
If you think it's important to have a way to separate them (and I agree with you on that), then maybe you should also agree with Ian that it's ISRAEL that needs to figure this out BEFORE killing tens of thousands of civilians. That's not "spicy", that's a "war crime".

I am please you mentioned mandatory national service. I have thought about this for a while as a way to unite. Maybe two years and a free college education during those two years. Anyway, it can take many forms.
Cllinto tried to do this with the AmeriCorp program. Bush defunded it and it was never funded fully again. The program still exists limitly and is now mostly serving in disaster mitigation and service.
The US Draft was very unpopular with much of the US public and abused by too many of America's elite who found numerous ways around being sent to Vietnam. GW by most, if not all, accounts did not fulfill his National Guard Service and President Bone Spirs did not serve in any way, shape, or form.
Forced service and forcing tax payers to pay for their college? Other countries can do that if they want. Not here
