The Bluegrass Professor: Tim Stafford Goes Decade by Decade

- A massive thanks to Tim Stafford for sitting down and having this chat, it was an absolute joy to put together (especially that picture of the actual Burger King in Kingsport, TN from the 1970's). I have a couple things I want to say about the production of this video though. This was the very first thing we filmed at IBMA and Mickey and Tim did incredibly. Unfortunately Hayes and I, who had set up the shooting rig for this day, made a mistake somewhere. I suspect the wireless lavalier mics that Mickey and Tim are wearing did not pair correctly with the receiver. Luckily, I had a field recorder sitting in the middle of the room. Unluckily, that field recorder picked up every shuffle and creaky chair in the room and was about 6 feet from the action. Through a combination of manual and AI powered restoration methods (and with a couple weeks time) I managed to make the audio presentable enough. This does mean that some sizeable portions of this interview were cut, if you notice anything strange in the audio or video, that's why. Thanks for understanding!

Tim is classy, hilarious, and full of bluegrass knowledge! Hope you guys enjoy this interview from our top secret room at IBMA.
Thank you for these interviews. I just watched the Mike Marshall one a few weeks ago 🔥
Great interview!
This is so far my favorite!!! My husband I think it was 2007 interviewed Tim and he was the nicest guy. Absolutely so knowledgeable and was so laid back. Great guy
Glad you enjoyed the interview! I concur that Tim is a great guy.
Tim is a great man. I attended Bluegrass at the Beach in Nehalem, OR. in about 1998 or 99. Tim was one of the staff teachers there. One night Tim, Dale Adkins, and myself hung out at Dale's camp until 1 AM. Dale was my regular teacher, but Tim and Dale really gave me some great playing tips and lessons...what a great evening. One of my most cherished memories ever. Tim and I have stayed friends ever since. He is so good.
Tim is a class act great musician, singer and person. Great interview! Thanks
Another class video. Who would have known that Tim Stafford would be so good at doing impressions?
He had us cracking up 😆
Thanks, Marcel. Been watching your channel for several years. I grew up listening to Blue Highway because my dad was such a big fan. Had Tim's accu-tab book very early on when I was just starting. Bought his Tony Rice book at a Blue Highway show 5-6 years ago. Tim is criminally underrated, like many players that came into their own in the 80s and 90s... great tone and sustain, unusual picking hand, great resume. Please don't hesitate to feature him again or tab his killer breaks.
He’s a true Flatpicking legend
This content is pure gold! It's a guitar lesson, history lesson, and performance all in one. I'll definitely have to watch through a few times to digest it all!
Thanks Marcel! You do an amazing job. I believe I had a pretty bad cold or had lost my voice somehow this day, ugh. I played Tony's guitar for the first time onstage during the day, in the afternoon set at Winterhawk, if anyone has video of that...
Really enjoying this niche you're pursuing. There's a huge audience out here that watches this with the same enthusiasm that the last generation watched TNN with.
Good quality 👍 Good subject 👍
Great Interview Mickey! Thanks to you and Marcel for sharing it with us.
You are welcome! So glad you enjoyed watching.
Thanks y’all what a great interview. Tim seems like such a nice and knowledgeable guy. No doubt he’s talented.
Nobody does an Earl Scruggs impression. Props to Tim for giving us a pretty good one!
The audio sounded just fine! It was neat watching this on the way to SPBGMA!
Tim is a cool guy. He walked in when we was recording at Hat Creek. That's where Blue Highway's magical albums come from. One of his song writing friend's owns the studio. Thankfully also a great friend of mine.
Great interview, Mickey!!!
Thanks Andy :)
So great! Thank you all for this.
What a great interview! Thanks guys 💙
And thanks so much Mickey--cool to reconnect with you and chat some!
You are welcome -- Hope to see you soon!
That music video at 8:45-and thus the "changed everything" moment-is actually for the song "Steel Rails."
True. I couldn't find the music video for the song Tim mentioned. I'm not sure it's made it to TH-cam yet...
Thank you.
Saw Blue Highway at The Down Home weekend before last. It was the best music event I've ever been to.
Super cool to hear from some of these heavily~influential people whose names aren’t typically on the marquee!
❤❤❤❤❤
Is that the potted plant of doom?
The plant will live in infamy!
That's the one!
We're eating good today
