During the Soviet era a soldier would ask his mother to talk to Djada Kolja (Uncle Kolja). Kolja is a nickname for Nicolai, Nicolas. In this way he ask the Saint and his mother to pray for him.

The believing Russian soldier, I imagine, fearing the censorship from communist army superiors reading letters and tapping phone calls, would ask his mother in a letter or a call home to "talk to uncle (Ni)kolya for him", aka to pray to Saint Nicholas fir him.

i read from some guy on reddit that the Greek word used for "slap" in the 1370 account, meant closer to slapping in a way as to slap them back in to their senses. if that were so it'd seem the combination of both his love for God and his love for the man resulted in a solid slap to the face. noice

Also, sometimes, someone writes something in reply to a comment I made, in Arabic letters, and there's too often no English translation. And you can't even copy paste another person's comment, to put it in Google translate.
So you don't know if they mentioned your mother, or their praised you. So annoying.
It’s a poem so it sounds nicer in arabic but it says:

Hello, if anyone could help me please. I have been interested in Orthodoxy for a very long time now but have never taken the next step because i’ve believed that i have to be of certain race to practice this beautiful religion. Is this true? I am a American of Hispanic descent. Thank you
Hey, this is not true at all - many Parishes here in America are converts from different ethnicities.
You do not need to be of any certain ethnicity to be an orthodox Christian! Christ accepts all who look and desire to follow him. When you see Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Antiochian, etc. in the church’s title, it is only a reference to the jurisdiction it belongs to. I attend a Greek Orthodox Church and do not have a drop of Greek in me but I was fully accepted as a member and brother of the Faith. Going forward, please contact the closest Orthodox Church near you and get in contact with the priest. Hell help you out with everything much better than any of us! God bless!

It's how little children pronounced "Saint Nicholas" in English speaking countries.
It's a shame people forgot the Christian origins of Santa.🎅
And, yes, he was a Christian Orthodox bishop, from what was for millenia Greece, and only became a part of Turkey in the 13th century AD because of the aggressive Islamic invasion on behalf of the Turks.
The long red hat and the long red robe were and still are the typical garments of christian bishops.
