I used to work as a waiter and oh my god this video is accurate af. I remember on my first day a customer asked for a side plate, so I gave one to her, but she complained that the plate was too cold and it would affect her food. So i had to get a fresh one from the dishwasher -.- Also there was one customer, "Excuse me, this plain water tastes watery". Like, bruh.

@@jackjo2739 "water taste too watery" reminds me of our leader with "the rain is wet, very wet." Now here is a couple of other gems: is the veggie burger vegetarian? Broccoli has gluten (only if there is some kind of breading on it)? Can go on all day.
Now kind of justify one of the comments, fish tasting fishy. If the fish (meaning whole fish, not processed or imitation fish {crab or lobster meat}) is a little old, it will have that slightly off "fishy" taste.

Cindy Palacio I don't think it's annoying at all. I hate when I'm dining out and the server is coming by every 5 minutes when I'm on a date or having dinner with friends or family. Im enjoying my time with them, not the server haha. So when I bartend or serve, I'll come by when something obvious needs to be taken care of like refills or clearing plates. Other than that I usually just scan the room and try to make eye contact with my tables. If they connect with me, they'll usually nod and I know I need to come by. If I get the "air signature" then I just print the check and drop it off; I don't have to make 2 trips to the table just to see what they want the first time.

Also, as a former waiter here are a couple other things that end up being annoying:
shacking your empty glasses in the air at us. (I will almost completely ignore you if you do this)
asking for something as soon as they just helped your table. ( just slightly annoying when they're trying to help someone else)
Talkers. We all know they mean well, and when it's not busy it's fine but once the conversation gets past 5 minutes we're just kinda thinking of a way out so we can help the next guest.
Kids. I know they touched on this a little here but sometimes if your kids are running around the restaurant, or yelling at the top of their lungs, and the parents are doing nothing about it makes me want backhand you and your children.
I've also never seen another server take another persons plate and eat their leftovers. That's kind of disgusting.
This is why i'm glad i'm not serving anymore. So people please be nice to your server. They have to put up with so much shit from other people and still have to smile and kiss your ass. And try to tip something (depending on whether the establishment accepts tips or not), nothing was more crushing than working hard on a table to see nothing there.

In Australia we don't have obligatory tipping. As a waiter, I was expected to do work and get paid. No extras. Was it bad? Not really. It meant that no matter how I was treated by a customer I would always get my fair due. I've been the USA and it was very confusing at first. The 10% tipping or something thereof was a bit of a buzz kill. I could see it in the waiters face when they would serve our table, there was no sincerity, only hope of a money tip and no real hospitality except what a dollar could buy. I liked getting tipped because it meant something. No obligation, just a nice statement of a customers enjoyment at my service and that's why I loved waiting.

    • @mountedgamesgirl
      @mountedgamesgirl 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Mohamed Shihadeh Having said that (as an American now living in Oz), I found service to be MUCH better in the US because people were working harder for it. I was appalled at the service here, and when I spoke to my coworkers, their opinion was "I get paid the same either way".
Just my experience though :) I've also had Aussies tell me American waitstaff are way too annoying because they check up on their tables too often! Haha

Mohamed Shihadeh Oooh please don't tip 10% in USA....that's not a great tip. I understand different cultures have different ways of doing things, but part of experiencing that culture is researching the customs of that country. And the reason you got the face is because servers in the USA know that "Foreigners" generally don't know the proper amount to tip. I know its a stereotype, but most of them are based off truths. And its no ones fault really, servers just know what they can expect as a tip, so they would rather focus on tables that they could maybe talk their way to a 25% tip to make up for the 10% they are going to get from certain tables.

    • @jcdias6951

I find its pointless to be even fazed by foreigners. Give them what they want. Little interaction, casual service, turn and burn. I don't offer desserts or after dinner drinks. Thank you, drop check, cash out, ciao later. It's a waste of time and no matter how much effort you put to make an a amazing experience you will get 10%. Sounds harsh, but that how it is. Ain't nobody got time for your lousy 10%.

I work as a server and this video is maybe 25% true. I don't eat food off of other people's plates. I am always "nice" to your food no matter what. Your appetizers are late because the cooks are either busy or have their heads up their butts. It just really sucks when customers get impatient and then us servers communicate your concerns to the cooks but the cooks are pissy and/or too busy to care. We get heat from the customers and the cooks. I don't care so much about the tip as much as I care about being treated with respect. Being a server is miserable at times, but the tips help us "hang in there". If it wasn't for the tips, nobody would ever work as a server (in the US). If you're not going to tip, please at least be kind to us. There are people that are straight assholes from the second they sit down. Furthermore, if you go out to eat on a Friday or Saturday night, don't be surprised that the restaurant is full and it takes more than ten minutes for your food to show up. Also, take into consideration that you are NOT the only table in the restaurant. Sometimes your "shitty" service is because the restaurant is half full and there is only one server.

Amelia Snow "Your appetizers are late because the cooks are either busy or have their heads up their butts."
NO, LOTS of times it's because the SERVER, here's why:
2 times servers have forgotten to put me and my husband's appetizer orders into the computer.
Once our server forgot to bring out my husband's side salad.
Another time, my husband's cup of soup was forgotten to be brought out.
My husband and I have had servers ADMITTED they PUT IN THE ORDERS WRONG into the computer.
Anytime you see your server that isn't serving food or anything that was asked for BEFORE we placed our orders go to buss tables or go WITHOUT BEING CALLED OVER to ask other tables what they need rather than going to one of the computers(for example, there's 4 computers at our Chili's), then you are truly DELAYING our food from coming to us.
Usually I order some condiments with my appetizers, when even my own server brings out my food or at times when another server brings it out, the condiments are missing from the item. My own server could have brought those condiments out AHEAD OF TIME, because there's no cooking involved in those.

Once, we had a waitress that greeted us which we ordered an appetizer as well as our drinks when greeted. I saw she tucking in chairs at empty tables and pretty much doing everything but coming back to get our entrée order. Well, I found out what happened. She brought out our appetizer and when I asked she said that she wanted to wait to put in our entrée orders. The thing is, that delayed us more by not at least coming to GET our orders. That way, when the appetizer was ready, we wouldn’t have gotten delayed eating our appetizer since we then had to give our entrée orders when we could have given our entrée orders WELL BEFORE THAT and we would have gotten our entrées faster due to that she could have just left to put our entrée orders into the computer after delivering our appetizer instead of taking time to order when our appetizer was sitting in front of us. The point is, SHE delayed our entrées as well as to be able to start eating our appetizer because she could have at least TAKEN our entrée orders and then when our appetizer would have been brought out, could have immediately gone to the computer to put our entrée orders in. What she did was make us wait while our hot appetizer was sitting in front of us, we couldn’t touch it, because we had to order our entrées and could have done that wayyy before that. She also delayed our entrées because we had to spend extra time AFTER our appetizer arrived to give her our entrée orders when we could have done that wayyyy before that.
Also, once my husband and I at Applebee's ordered some mozzarella sticks, then the server VOLUNTARILY had gone to another table rather than saying "I'll be right with you all." When the food came out, they had ordered a bowl of soup, guess what our waiter did, he had our mozzarella sticks on the tray as well as their cup of soup, he served them their soup BEFORE ours off the tray. Needless to say he didn't get much of a tip for cutting TWICE in front of our turn. It was OUR TURN. We should have gotten our mozzarella sticks FIRST handed to us off the tray first. Also, our waiter in the first place should NOT have held our order up by voluntarily taking another order. He should have gone STRAIGHT to the computer. The longer you WAIT to put in order order, the LONGER WE WAIT. The longer you have it on the tray without serving it to us, the LONGER we wait.
So when you start to blame the cooks, it's usually 99% of the time, THE SERVER'S FAULT in this situation.
When you intentionally delay putting in the order, coming to get the order, bringing things obviously wrong out, putting in the order wrong in the first place, it's YOU MY SERVER that messed up. Please STOP LYING TO THE INNOCENT PUBLIC about this, because in MOST CASES, it's USUALLY YOUR SERVER THAT MESSED UP.
Stop acting like you servers are so innocent when you *SEE* your server delaying your orders and some servers are honest enough to ADMIT fault that they did forget to put in our orders. We have had servers admitted to our faces they forgot to put in the appetizer orders.
My point is, BE HONEST! 9 times out of 10 it's due to your server that isn't going to the computer to put your order in. If you don't go put our order in, how the hell are we going to get it as fast as possible, huh? As I said, in our local Chili's, 4 computers. If one has a server at it, walk to the other one.
Also, I am so tired of servers bussing tables first as if you would want your food to get delayed to clean up. You aren't going into the kitchen to put my order into the computer in most cases, so you have no reason to clean up anything before going to the computer. Also, as I said before, when you go to other tables without them calling you over, do you realize what a HUGE DELAY that REALLY IS to our food? Every single time you decide to do something else rather than going to that computer, it's YOUR FAULT our food takes longer. Please be HONEST!

The thing about asking the chef is true... you just have to understand that if I refuse a request, it's BECAUSE I've asked the chef before and snapping "Well, go ask the chef" is just kinda pointless for everyone involved. I'll always ask the chef the first time something comes up, but if it's something that gets asked again and again and the answer never changes... yeah... no point in getting yelled at by the customer, going back and getting yelled at by the chef, then going back out and getting yelled at by the customer.
I don't mind the "air signature" one bit though. :)

I don't mind the air signature either but what you said about "asking the chef" is so true. I take pride in knowing our menus inside and out. For most it can be rude.. it's similar to people snapping there fingers to get the servers attention or shaking there empty cups in the air because they need refills withought verbally saying it. It can rub people the wrong way. Saying it verbally is much better like "Excuse me, can I get the check please when you have time!"or something like than instead of having them try to read your sign language..

Children, I love them, they can honestly make my day because they are just so adorable sometimes and get so excited when they order their food. Tips are great, you feel like you've done an outstanding job when you get a good tip. Tip your servers ladies and gentlemen because yes, we are burning ourselves on the bottom of your plates and aren't allowed to use trays at some restaurants. Don't think of yourselves as annoyances when asking for something because it is our job to serve you, we get paid (not much, but tips make up for it) and I, personally, love what I do and love that I can serve and give others a good dining experience

This is why I'm always nice to waiters and waitresses. They put up with enough BS, they don't need any more from me. I've also found that how people treat their server is a great judge of character. So if you've met a new person and you'd like to see if they're a good person or not do the "restaurant test." Take them out to dinner, and judge if you'd like to remain acquainted with them by how they treat the server. Chances are, if they treat their waiter like a piece of shit, they're probably a piece of shit themselves. It doesn't filter out all the bad people, but it gets some of them.

Sometimes I do something that I feel like is annoying (Like, they ask if I need anything, and I say no, then they go on to the next table. Suddenly, I realize I'm out of my drink!!!!! Ahhh!!! So I timidly attempt to say "Um, Ma'am, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry-" when they walk back through after all the other tables. ) But I just don't see why people are rude. I thank them after every refill, I NEVER yell at them when there is a mistake-- I was at a place once that was out of the first _two things_ I wanted to order, and I swear that waitress looked like she was ready to cry when I didn't scream at her- just???? Why would you be mean to a human that has to put up with other humans for hours for little pay?? AND WHY WOULD YOU NOT TIP??? (unless you don't have the money. I completely understand that. It comes across as really stuck up, but these things would NEVER cause me to take long to get to a table. I would never purposely take forever to get someone what they need, that's not good service. I have a lot of respect for servers who genuinely want customers to enjoy their food and experience at a restaurant. And I have a lot of respect for customers who genuinely appreciate their servers. No you don't have to tip me your whole bank account, i don't see you as a dollar sign, i see you as a person. All i ask for is the same treatment.

Do all servers feel like this? I hate these videos because anytime I go to a bar or an tattoo shop I get anxiety by the fact that there's a chance I'm the one being an inconvenience and bothering the employee.

    • @powerpc127
      @powerpc127 7 ปีที่แล้ว

As long as you know what you want to order when you tell your server that you're ready, you have no outlandish requests (a vegetarian *and* gluten free meatloaf, for instance), and you leave around the time that the restaurant closes, then you're not an inconvenience. In fact, you're helping your server make money by dining out. If you want some brownie points, just be a cool person (and a decent tip goes a long way).

This video was good and I'm all for being kind to waiters but the 7th or so one really annoyed me. I have a peanut allergy and if I ask you to ask the chef if something is peanut free then I'd actually like you to ask not just pretend to...

Robyn.... Most nice restaurants take allergies very seriously, and in those nicer establishments, your server should have a firm grasp on allergy questions.

I think she meant for some ridiculous request from the customer that she knows the chef will say no to.
If you specify that it is for allergies, they will take it seriously.

"Be nice to me, and ill be nice to your food"
I'm a full time kitchen supervisor and this pisses me off the most, if I see any of the servers touching the food I yell at them. Nor will I purposely tamper with someones food just because they are being a prick to the server.
To be completely honest, the best way to deal with an over stubborn or ignorant customer is to just be overly nice to them, regardless on how rude they are. That way you arent tarnishing the restaurant in any way possible.

I only agree with most of this...some of the things that "annoy" the waiter/tress would be the result of the waiter not doing their job in the first place!! If you don't leave ur table sitting there done eating for 10 min while you chit chat with ur co-worker be grateful they simply do the air signature and dont ask for a manager cuz that's just being a bad employee in general!!! I've been a server so I'm always nice to servers but at the same time I expect the same servie I would provide someone else!!
