New project Beretta - nice clean slate for the LS swap and RWD conversion

  • I snagged this thing out of a junkyard where it had been sitting for 4 years. It's a little dirty around the edges, but it's a great car to cut up and modify. This video shows the basic gameplan for my swap. The front and rear suspension, as well as some odds and ends like the fuel tank and seats.

    Can't believe I'm just now finding this channel. My first car was an 89 GT white!!!!!! When I had it, I said I was gonna keep it and eventually do this very same project... then life happened. This is likely going to be my favorite build series on all of the internet!

    I spent months looking for one in the 90's in high school. Couldn't find one within my budget at the time so I opted for a 92 Z24 Cavalier 3.1 and stick. Still an awesome alternative to the Beretta. Did lowering springs, full exhaust, centerforce clutch, etc.

    If you plan on using the factory lower control arm mounts I think I’d get a mustang 8.8 and then fab up some mounts for the upper links. Triangulated 4 link would work well.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an explorer 8.8 already. Going to make DIY lower control arms that bolt to the factory Beretta rear torsion axle mounts. Making a torque arm to eliminate axle rotation. This will be a tire burner first and foremost, but I can get the geometry pretty good.

    • @stevebauer6293
      @stevebauer6293 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GEARHEADdezign I have an Explorer 8.8 in my car now. Super easy to cut them down to any width. Custom axles are also reasonably priced.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think full width will work well, but I'll see better once it's in the car. I can shorten 3in with another stock pass axle if needed or just get 5x100 Moser axles and not worry about adapters.

    I just bought a basic bitch 88 Beretta, which was one of my dream cars when I was in high school, they were new then, lol. My Chevy Beretta won't start it suddenly died before rough idling and poor acceleration.. it won't even give a code on the OBD2 after buying an adapter for OBD1 to OBD2. What do you think it could be I already changed the fuel pump and I changed the ignition coils and the spark plugs and the wiring to the spark plugs. • @GEARHEADdezign

      A friend of mine did that with his Grand Prix RWD swap @autotechtyler but the track width will be too wide for a Beretta. I want the first iteration to look completely stock from the outside.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The short long arm configuration of the Camaro is superior to the McPherson Beretta strut for handling, but my Camaro will be the competitive car. The Beretta will be mostly a tire burner and drifter.

    I couldn't hear much due to the background music overpowering you. Most folks do the music during the sped up portions of a build, and revert back to voice description.
    I hope you're going to beef up the nv3500, I killed three of them with a 375hp SBC in my 94 silverado. I would look at SST (Silver sport transmission) in Tennessee for a beefier version, or a different trans itself.

    • @GEARHEADdezign
      @GEARHEADdezign  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, thanks for the audio advice. I'll turn it down more next time.
      I know the nv3500 doesn't have a great reputation, and it will get replaced once I add power. But in a light car with small tires and only 293ci, I'm hoping it will live for a while.
