Just tried one of these in the London Yamaha music shop.....I had to buy it! Acoustically it sounds like a much older guitar, very warm and resonant. However the action plays like a modern instrument and is super comfortable and lightweight with the small body size. I was also able to plug in to a PA and test the pickup system and WOW! It pretty much sounded like the guitar but just louder. My only complaint is that it is lacking some brightness, however this can easily be amended by boosting treble on a mixer/amp. I also tried some of the LS rosewood model guitars, however there was no comparison. These were a lot heavier in weight, thinner acoustic sound, 'quacky' plugged in sound and even the tuners were no way near as accurate/smooth. Overall the FSX5 is great value for money and it even comes with a solid hard case! Well done Yamaha!
Can confirm, this thing is a beast. Tried playing a bunch of guitars at Guitar Center. Martins, Taylors, Gibsons, Seagulls, etc. Mostly more of the entry-mid levels since that was all they had in stock, but a couple of the Taylors and Martins were $2-4k. Even tried a Collings. The Yamaha FSX3 blew them all acoustically and DEFINITELY plugged in. And that’s the Chinese made one going for $900 at the moment, so I ordered the FSX5 in. Reminds me of the Taylor 414ce Ovangkol I used to have, but still I prefer the Yamaha. Simply the best gigging guitar out there if you don’t want to install your own pickups or mic your guitar.
I think this is the best sounding, small body acoustic under $2K that i’ve heard or played. Not for a heavy handed player, but Thys is the prefect person to demo this guitar. I cannot believe how good it sounds strummed. If you can get your hands on one of these you should. It has been haunting me since I played one about a month ago. Also played the FS3, and it is absolutely the most stunning guitar sub $1K I’ve ever heard or played.
Thanks a lot for the review. Bought this same model a month ago. It sounds truly amazing. And built quality is really good. Yamaha is underrated. Amazing value for money.
I just spent about an hour listening to Furch and Martin 000 guitars in the 1800 price range and this guitar flat out sounds better. Great job Yamaha and demonstrator.
I have one of these...Loud enough to play with Banjo, sensitive enough to play light and gentle. The above demo is the best by far on youtube. Shows what the guitar is about and gives true sound of the guitar. . Lovely playing. Will never part with mine.
Sounds really good. Very nice playing. And well recorded, beautiful stereo image and not too much of that closed mic sound. Sounds very natural. Reminds me of a fantastic Sun Kil Moon record (Ghosts of the Great Highway), with the great acoustic singer songwriter tracks: Glenn Tiptop, and Carry Me Ohio. Seems he's been known to play a Gibson L-00 small body acoustic.
This is an amazing guitar, and a very beautiful instrument. The only negative was the action was a little high when I received it, which was easily fixed with a minor setup from my trusty luthier. I will enjoy the fsx5 for many years.
I had the same experience. I was able to get an open box discount through Reverb a couple of months ago. I was a little nervous until I received it but, other than a set-up for the action, not one complaint. I already had an LL16, so I wanted to get the smaller body with different tone woods. I just love playing this guitar.
Made a decision yet? Personally got the FG5. Bottom line both will be great. If you like strumming more get the FG5 if you fingerpick more than you strumm get the FS5. Even though I'm more of a picker I got the dread since I already own an om for Fingerstyle
hey@@theREDC0de , i got the FGX5 and it is handsdown the best sounding and fun to play guitar i own, albeit it is not the most pricey one. it is possible that i will also get the FSX5 at some point, they are so good :P
Great review and playing. I can't make my mind up between the Martin 000-10e or the yamaha FSX3, mostly in playing worship unplugged, I see both are played here what would you recommend ?

Probably the most underrated guitar ever
Totally agree, apart from its sound, it is beautiful...

Sounds so organic and like it’s been around for a couple decades. I want one!

I saw the boy playing the guitar and I felt so much love from the Father for him.
God bless that boy
I have the 'entry level' equivalent of this Yamaha and am looking forward to upgrading to this model in a few years.
Really tasteful rhythm playing, a light natural touch and fantastically recorded demo. Thank you!

Ghosts of the Great Highway is fantastic!
Bought mine yesterday. Loving it.
I LOVE MINE...had it for about 5 years or so
About the best review I’ve heard so far.
I’ve got a 1960s FG110 red label which I love. Got to get my hands on one of these for the collection.
I have had an fsx5 for a couple of years. It is a fine instrument. Plugged in to a decent pedal board and mesa boogie amp it’s beautiful.
Wonderful demo! My FSX5 is ordered an on its way, can’t wait
What a wonderful sounding guitar! And I completely overlooked it.
Is there any way to get a transcription for that part at 2:48? It's a beautiful fingerpicking piece
Love this guitar! Sounds better than a more than twice the price Martin 00018
Amazing sound

guitar sounds incredible here...almost like a 00 gibson, super dry and warm
How would you say this compares warmth wise to the 000-18? Thanks!
Is this an fg 150 remake comparison or it's closest there of ?
nice guitar, is this model all-solid wood? 😊
All red label guitars are solid wood. 3 is made in China and the 5 is made in Japan.
Question to the guy playing: wich do u prefer, the fgx5 or fsx5? :)
Oh man it song so good 💜
Can you please list the songs you played
I notice there are FSX5 and FSX5 ll (2017 - 2024) models. What is the difference?
The II has a gloss finish
Great😊♥️
VERY NICE

Congratz on thr Fgx5.
I love these guitars as well. Sooner or later I'll get weak and buy a FS5 as well haha.
Fg5 vs FS5 ? What's the difference?
FG5 is Dreadnought size and FS5 is a smaller Auditorium size
Hi! Any idea on the recording chain (mic/pre), and are these the strings that ship with it? Thanks.

is this one made in japan?
yes it is.

The FS is better for finger style and plugged in. For worship go with the FG3 or FG5, it’ll fill the room better
Better for chord progressions
I ended up getting the fsx3 first and then a used FG3, lovely guitars to play and superb sound, the FG3 definitely fills the room
