People needs to discover this album. Thank you. This album is in my life for more than 30 years and I still have lot of emotion listening it! The side B is more less easy to apprehend but it is a dream!
It was more than work or pleasure for Mike. It was his main method of communication and the world he lived in to escape his problems. It was everything to Mike in those days, and that explains it's power imo. It was his salvation in a way.
This is a classic album, it marks Mike's arrival as a top guitar player. The Shire analogy is a good one, I feel that too. You should react to more from Mike Oldfield, including Return To Ommadawn, a great sequel to this album.
I prefer this to side 1, as Mike in repose seems more authentic and deeper somehow. The melody from 4:30 is sublime. This is the remastered (pension) version isn't it, where he messed about with all the levels. Previous version is a lot better imo. In parts this sounds like a demo compared to the 1975+ release.
I have an older album vinyl so when I listen there it'll be the original mix. I used a ripped mp3 for the video. Not sure which version exactly it was....
@@deanwolfechannel Hergest Ridge is even worse. Original mix from 1974-5. Sounds amateur and messy to me, but some prefer it. Then Boxed verison which became standard version well into new millenium. Smoother, tidied up, much nicer imo. Then recentish remaster where Mike decided to go back to original mix and do a new remix. So the 1975 Boxed version, available for many years, is now not available new. Can't work that one out lol. Most of his recent remasters just seem to raise volumes of minor tracks in the mix, hardly improving them imo.
Might i suggest the 1976 album Variations on a theme by Paginini by none other than Andrew Loyd Webber. Make sure its the original1976 version as it has Gary Moore on guitar amongst other greats on various instruments.

I really love how much tension, drama and even darkness there's through much of side B and how it climax with the beautiful, uplifting end.

FYI, this version of the album is a remastered. There are noticeable differences in the Pt. 2 Finale...pipes are no longer there.

Old pressing. I used a download for the vid for practical reasons, but now that it's done I play it a lot

This remix isn't a patch on the original 1975 mix. The uillean pipes have way too much reverb on them here for a start.😫
