John get out of my head lol I just recurved a black locust and chased a ring on two more black locust staves and planned to leave sapwood on one … the sapwood is strong I made a bow from it and it only broke because I removed too much wood in one spot but I bent my drawknife on green sapwood when no first got the staves .. after it dries you can barely scratch it… so I switched to the hatchet….. poetry .. lol but we’ve been on the same plane for like a week wtf. Have a good day old man
That's some damn good information. I guess for the time being, your my spirit animal. Yep, I was thinking as I scraped off the bark and cambium and my draw knife hit that sapwood and skipped right over it, this stuff is like a rock. I've made bows out of it before but always had the mindset that I had to only use heartwood. I like difference in color; bands in black walnut or working with yew.
Oh I was gonna say if the stave is seasoned the sapwood should be awesome in Tension but green and it will warp your stavescuz it dries so much faster but it likes heat like Osage so that stuff is of no concern to me get er dun

I’m not John but I just finished a bow that only dried since beginning of march and it held its reflex just heat treat it multiple times if you have to drive the moisture out of it checks fill the cracks with epoxy or titebond that’s what I do no failure to checks yet anyway have a good day sorry to bother you
