I think many people who think this contract is too rich are still stuck on salaries from 5-10 years ago. Mid-grade defensemen, which is what McCabe is, start at $4+M a year. Sounds too much but that’s the competitive reality. Over the next 5 years, with the cap increasing, this contract will be considered reasonable value if he stays reasonably healthy. And if not, it goes into LTIR just like Muzzin. Either way, not a bad deal for both parties.
It isn't just good ''market value'' (which you're right, it is), but it's also a GREAT investment for Toronto into a player who actually contributes to the overall direction these team needs to move in! For well over 7yrs we kept watching Toronto say ''We need to get grittier, tougher, play with more heart...etc'' and then we'd read about aging veterans, or core-4 contracts being where we spent our cap space once again.... With McCabe we FINALLY have someone who plays 'big' and with heart for several more years!
Jake McCabe signing now, before a cap that could be as high as 92M USD next year is amazing. His AAV is 4.7M, and in my eyes? That's a phenomenal deal that was made by Tree. I love this. McCabe gets his praise, but there's still a part of me that feels he's still a little overlooked in his importance for this team. 4.7?!? ALL DAY, EVERYDAY!! Beautiful signing, I'm absolutely loving this.. and IF the cap goes to 92M? Jesus, what a deal, considering he's probably our 2nd or at the very lowest our 3rd most important D-man? This is great, GLG!!
Yeah, realistically to get that fine cap hit, it probably took that 5th year, which I'm completely fine with because of the cap jumps and LTIR exists if things go wrong given the style of defenseman Jake is!
One caution I will say: there's a CBA renewal between now and year 6. And we know with the backdiving contracts, the NHL was pissed enough that they demanded the cap recovery be recognized for those contracts. With this deferred salary stuff, my default assumption is that the NHL will require those cap hits to be recognized when they get paid out. We don't know what will happen, but I think it's safer to assume that until otherwise proven.
It is safer to assume nothing will happen. The teams are already being charged with the cap hit of the future money. In McCabe's case he is making $3.6M on average for 5 years, but his cap hit is higher at $4.51M due to the deferred money. They won't be charged with the cap hit a second time.

Decent contract for a decent defenceman. It will age as well as McCabe will. NMC is a killer though probably the reason for the lower than expected salary.

No because d men typically mature later, skate less and are more then capable of being useful players 30+, unlike forwards who need to be good skaters, d man don’t really need to be fast skaters if they’re good at reading the play
@@hockey_highlights_and_more I mean Giordano was effective for 2 years for the Leafs in his early 40s. Heck if you want to go back to 1967, the Leafs had a defense corps with no one under 30 and a guy over 40. And they were a great defensive team. The key is that the forwards do their part. The defensemen have been good overall, so as long as the team plays team defense and gets out of this funk they'll be fine.
Taken in isolation there isn't any problem with this contract for Jake McCabe. Fair cap hit and doesn't pay him until he's egregiously old. That being said with the age, salary and no movement/trade cluases awarded to their D they have basically zero flexibility to pivot or remake the blue line if the team underperforms. I'm not sure that the D group is good enough to justify the lack of flexibility.
Seems like they couldn’t really develop their defenceman if this is the route they’re taking. Trading away all the young guys and signing all the old guys. Should be fun to see how this plays out. Top 4 d are locked in

I am not a Leafs fan, and this ins't a knock on the Leafs but a greater issue for the NHL.. I am going to share something with fanbases you may not be aware of. There is a "terrible" assumption that the cap will go up and up over time. I am 99% sure IT WILL NOT. I am here with my popcorn to watch this though. Maybe I will be wrong. Right now the world is entering a deep recession/depression (depending on where you live). Now there are 2 paths to this inevitability. #1 allow the deep recession/ depression to play out (Not likely as that's political suicide and civil unrest territory). #2 the governments will once again print trillions of trillions to support everyone which will cause massive inflation again. As we have seen over the last couple of years a combined inflation of about 25%. If we were to enter a higher inflation period again say 2026-2027, of the same rate as the last 2 years then that means that from 2022-2027 (5 years) our currencies would have lost 50% of their purchasing power or prices would have risen by 50% from 2022-2027. Since sports, Rv's, trips, etc are luxury or discretionary items they are the first to be dropped when finances are tight. For the average person both paths are bad, the 2nd option like 2020 simply delays things. What we should have sen in 2020 was a depression, instead we saw bailouts, which resulted in massive inflation and now a deep recession, just delayed. Now if we see bailouts again in 2025 then we know inflation is coming again as well which is its own kind of economic problem. So I am curious over the next few years how the cities, the fan bases and teams manage their businesses if the cap does not go up or if the people can't afford the games. And this doesn't include war as a possibility which also would require massive money printing to fund the weapons building and such. I hope for peace and I wish everyone well.
Jake is ok 2 year 3.5 mill deal. Fire shanny and Brad for the love of leaf fans. They are messing this team up enough for the next decade, it’s a gong show in Toronto.

I might be in the minority here where i think it is an overpay for the leafs to give that cap hit. I think he is fine but not someone you needed to keep. He looks brutal far too often defensively and he doesnt contribute enough offensively to make up for it. Would have rather used that money to keep bertuzzi. I liked the vast majority of trelivings contracts but i hate this. On a championship team, he wouldnt be in anyones top 4.

Centers are a more pressing need. Or We need Guys that do very well against our division and vs the Oilers and Avalanche. Gourde and Vatrano would be perfect for right now. On D we will be better off. Rafai might be a good leaf. Meyers could stick. Then Danford for sure and possibly Chadwick. Im missing a couple like Niemla. We need Cowan and Minten to fill rolls next year if they dont solidify where they are lacking. They will figure something out soon. New owner and Director of MLSE. They want wins or they will get rid of Shanahan
@@freetimeflip6438 Centers? You guys have plenty of those. You need a top all star LW. Leafs have been shoe horning centers to other positions for too long
@freetimeflip6438 I'm just thinking of the long(ish) term deals to older D. They aren't going to improve. Their best years are behind them, and they are locked in for a while.
LTIR BBY. If you go to tanev or mccabe tomorrow and tell him he's either going to the Marlies or he can sit at home and call it a career I bet you that guy collects his paycheck on ltir
Dude is gonna have no nose when he leaves
LMAO. Fire Brad when he has made some amazing moves this offseason. You are ridiculous
@ like what ? Who? Ya Brad has been crap from day 1. Domi? What a garbage gm
@@robquasi6153 Oh yeah, because the Tanev, OEL, and Stolarz signings were atrocious right?🤡 Domi has played good, you need a guy like that on your team, a very skilled playmaker
Welcome back to having a bad GM Leafs!
treliving continues the trend dubas left sign injured overrated players and extend guys who have never won , mcabe doesnt make the leafs better and neither is any player treliving has signed, imagine failing every year and being rewarded , chicago didnt want this guy
Should be doing dishes instead of this word vomit
you know, i really wouldn't use your personal email to start fights on youtube... some people are crazy out there. you may find yourself chuckling at a remark you made on a random video, and then the next day be in a field in hamilton. you never know!
@@derps8690 why are you using my email
Extended a pylon
an internet troll calling a professional hockey player a pylon.
terrible deal, im convinced the guy has a brain issue with some of the sht he does, like that interference right after leafs score last game.
Oooof, 31yo mid pair dman at 4.51m FOR 5 YEARS! Congrats leaf’s fans, you get to enjoy Jake McCabe till 2030 when he’s 36. Cause ain’t nobody buying 33 year-old at that dollar figure for what he’s capable of. Best case you’ve got a Jeff petry, probably you give up picks to move him off the books in two years.
Rielly ISN'T a concern? A 4mil defenceman who can't play defence making over 3 mil more a year than he's worth??...
LMAO BRUTUAL take. McCabe is one of our best defensive dmen, just outside of Tanev and netted 10 goals last year. 4.5 mil is actually a pretty fair price, he left money on the table for sure to stay with the leafs
@jimmykummelisdeadexposed7671 i dont doubt he left money on the table. But i also dont like him at 4.5 either. I just feel like if we really wanted to keep him, hes someone that they should have squeezed harder. Dont think he is irreplaceable at all.
@@crushdavis7048 Like Steve said, it’s very hard to be able to get a top 4 Dman for 4.5 or cheaper, especially one that can play both the left and right side
@@jimmykummelisdeadexposed7671 fair. But i view him more as a top 6 guy than a top 4 guy which i think is the big sticking point here.
