I lived in Vietnam. Homestead is not an option. It's a must, but it's been growing fast in the last couple of years into city life. A lot of people here buy refrigerator is to show off that they have money. People here prefer their food fresh. I am looking into this because the power here is not consistent. There's alot of black out. I need to keep my mom's insulin safe from these blackout.
Hi lam same. Here Phil pines constant blackout I use solar here for my reef very dependable use lithium bats. No power here since Dec 2021 till now may 2021 solar is way to go must use bats lithium

I lined my entire bottom of my freezer with gal jugs of water. After they froze I put a layer of foil bubble wrap and then a rack over that. I can have a freezer full of fish and moose and it can go on and off and have no problems at all for weeks at a time. The solar works when it can but otherwise it just stays ice cold from the ice...Wonderful to have the jugs of water for coolers at the river and also after October can unplug it until March....Sun Danzer is the best freezer for off grid and now we are considering a chest fridge as well...
Thats a neat tip i might try this myself ...What jugs are you using plastic milk jugs ? . I'm guessing plastic half filled to allow for expansion would work best ?
Yes. Just regular water jugs. I open them and drink a few sips then put cap back on. I put each jug in plastic bag incase one splits
I use for my ice chest when going camping and replace every few years
I have lived off grid so it keeps the freezer cold even if power were to go off for awhile if batterybank goes down

If you move that freezer around it will fail! When a compressor runs it wears in just like an engine does. Fragments collect in the refrigerant of the system and settle at the bottom. When you move a fridge/freezer the fragments get disturbed and get ran through the system which can plug up orifices, filters and even ruin the compressor internal seals. You should let a fridge/freezer sit unused after being moved for atleast 48hrs before running it.

Isn't off grid living the absolute best thing anyone can do! The great outdoors, nothing better than fresh air and the peace and quiet one has when they are homesteading! I'm happy to see you guys enjoying the good life!
Hey Guys, Just wanted to let you know we have a 14cu. Ft. Sunstar that we are running on a 300W 24v set up with 4-79Ahr. 12v batteries. We have been very happy with it.

Sent your solar info to my husband as he loves solar. We have panels on the roof of our house now and wanted to know how to get a battery bank set up and what it might take. What amazes me is that it ia all YOURS. The power is yours, the animals are yours, the land is yours. You have NO debt. You can come and go as you please and buy what you need when needed. You are free. Oh my...what that must feel like...
Took many years of focus and work but yes! Wouldn’t trade it for anything. ❤️

That’s how freezers were defrosted back in the day.....worked then too...we have to go back to the tech to the 60s to go off grid easily....we are so spoiled now but we are headed back in time.....those who are paying attention know what I mean.
I was thinking that myself. Haha All this stuff is so complicated and often doesn't even work. I also love how a lot of people think they invented being off grid. My family has a summer home in Western Canada that is a beautiful house and completely off grid and has been like that since 1978. We have always used propane with no hiccups or much trouble. We are not like these people that are washing out plastic bags though. Propane is super cheap now though. It is cleaner and easier and not invasive or desperate. It's like the Prius. It's great the car has all these energy savings through fancy means, but the car sucks to drive and is no fun. Many cars in the 80's and 90's got the same mpg or better! AND they are cheaper and easier to fix! So who was smarter? Haha
@@HollywoodCreepercars from that period were generally underpowered and slow though. i know honda does it, and i think toyota stopped a fee years ago, but they would purposefully undercut the power of the engine output so as to strain the engine less, leading to a longer lasting engine. idk if they did it with all their cars, but i do know they did it with the 1GZ-FE 5.0L V12 in the Century. that's why people love toyotas. main reason cars can't get the same efficiency as back then is due to the EPA, same reason trucks went from useful tools to land yachts/compensation mobiles. i do see a push for smaller, more economical cars rising, so maybe there is some hope for it

Great you got a freezer. That's the one thing I would miss if I had to go off grid. I'm used to just taking things from the garden, cutting them up, and throwing them in the freezer. I haven't gotten into canning or drying. I'm sure I could do it, but freezers are convenient and the food is the best.
I had the same sized SunDanzer as you, but mine was the refrigerator model. I agree with everything you said, but I ended up with two complaints related to my unit.
First, the refrigerator temp was difficult to control and was sensitive to input voltage (which was also a controller problem). On super sunny days, it would freeze, but on cloudy or partly cloudy days, it would hold temperature settings. Also, the bottom would freeze regardless. If I buy again, I would just buy the freezer model.
Second, the aluminum interior will corrode over time. As it does, pinholes will develop and the lining will get brittle and begin to flake off. I and others have suggested to SunDanzer to use plastic like everyone else in the world, but my email never received a response.
Even with these issues, SunDanzer is still the best and most efficient DC freezer on the market. Thanks for the video.

A few years ago, I researched the SunDanzer freezer. I think you can operate it by connecting a PV panel of just 85 watts output directly. It has its own charge controller. There is no need for a battery, as it is its own thermal flywheel, so stored external energy is not always needed. It depends on how often you open the freezer and put new stuff in it. As I recall, these units are rated in cans per hour. Weird way to rate, but realistic.
We have one of these (refrig model) we use when we visit our off-grid shack. Older model than yours, but basically the same. Love it, definitely stops all those ice runs in the TX desert. Helps to sit a bag of ice into it when we first arrive in warm weather, to get the temps down quickly. It was our best upgrade to the tin shack.
My wife and I have one of these. Works great, requires little solar, I love it.
This is awesome! We will be saving up for one of their refrigerator units and their chest freezer as well and seeing you hook it up and it being operational is a great testimony. Now, those solar panels. The photovoltaic cells are silicon-based and as such are heat sensitive. So, to improve their energy output and their lifespan, you need to get as much heat away from the panels as possible. This is where running copper or stainless steel tubing behind the panels come into play. Use the heat to heat water or whatever it is needed for. A one-way check valve so the heat does not reverse or go stagnant. Great for hot water for the house and hot water storage to help heat the house in the winter, the chicken coop, greenhouse, etc.
this is great. I didn't even know they existed. I've been trying to figure out a switch that was controlled with the thermostat so that I wouldn't have to leave the inverter on. awesome. good luck on your off grid living.

Mobile meat! Wonderful. Your hair looks lovely. Our neighbor sold his grass feed beef at the local farm market. The county wouldn’t allow him sell cooked meat so he offered a free sample slider burger with the purchase of an order form. All the order forms were filled out and his beef was sold out by the end of the day.
Now THAT is creative problem solving!
I looked into Sundanzer, but at $1,500 was a little expensive for me at the time. I've been running a 18cubic with a small 3.5cubic chest freezer 24/7 on my 48 volt system withe very low power use, but you need to take into account the wattage the defrost cycle will use. Wonder what that Home depot double door was pulling 800watts once or twice in the middle of the knight. That was the reason to down size. Would like to find a smaller chest freezer to put in the back of my Dodge ram for those Costco runs😀

Basic operation of fridge or freezer space...fill up the empty space(solid card board blocks/wood blocks/Styra foam blocks/fill containers of water as needed) so the unit is not trying to chill/freeze the empty air space in your unit( put pad lock on it to stop the star gazers/theft...only open once a day or every planed second day to get your food that is required....morning when the solar is running or when you run the generator...Kia ora from the land of the Kunekune pigs Motiti island,Aotearoa,New Zealand

We have a 24 v dc to 110 ac system.
The temperature is our biggest problem we are 3500' altitude so winter is freezing and right now it 100 and getting hotter.

This one uses about 44amp hours a day at 24 volts so about 1kw.

We got one of these Sundanzer 8cf refrigerators about 12 yrs ago. It sat boxed up for 5 yrs, until we finally hauled it to our off grid cabin. We still claim this as the BEST improvement to date. once it chills down it doesn't require that much electric to maintain the cold. Back then they cost $950 to purchase from some off grid website in Louisiana. But these are made, arte least partially, in El Paso, TX.
Ours developed a slow Freon leak. I called El Paso, and easily spoke to one of the friendly a n d helpful owners. Soldered in a copper line tee, with fitting, to add coolant. Half a can of R134, working great for the last 4 years.

A tip for monitoring temperature is to, half fill a container with water, freeze it, flip it over... if you discover ice (or water) in the bottom (dry part) of your container... you know you had an issue and can (depending on how long and high) throw out or cook all your meat and refreeze...

Hey Jamie, it is good to see you again! and Jeremy you are one smart guy. It is always nice to see both of you.
Great tip on the sundanzer dcf225. After googling I found it costs $1190 + $113 shp. vs. a similar 115 VAC at Costco for around $150 + $50 for inverter. To choose $200 over $1300 is easy.
++ Don H.. Cost to run is where the long term savings are. This is basically commercial grade with much more insulation than the $150 unit that is typically available in a discount store. Most likely this will keep stuff frozen for several days if the power supply fails, which wont be the case with cheaper units. Also, comparing power draw, this is a drop in the bucket compared to doing it with a cheap unit on an inverter, never mind finding an inverter for $50 that will run several years without failing. On top of that you still need batteries (the most expensive part) and a solar system to keep them up.
@@rupe53 hook up the inverter to a large 12v battery, and hook up a trickle charger to the battery. That should keep the freezer running at least a couple weeks following a long term power failure. Add insulation around the chest freezer (except the vent). That should help also. Ok, a bit more power draw, but it would take many years to pay back the hundreds in cost savings.
++ Don H .. And what was going to power that trickle charger? If you use solar power then the charge rate must be GREATER than the discharge rate. (power draw) The whole reason to go with a more efficient freezer is to save on the solar side, which is really the expensive part.... AND... since they are using the solar system to power other things, which may be needed on a cloudy day, they must conserve the batteries whenever possible. Yeah, you can cobble stuff together to make the cheap freezer work better, but it will never match the better unit in the long run. Also consider that even a LARGE 12 volt battery has limitations. Best you could hope to purchase is similar to a golf cart style, which may only be good for a few days at best. Yes, motors are hell on batteries so best to shave that side whenever possible.
Holy smokes I haven't watched in a while and both of ya'lls styles changed a lot since I last watched. Man Jeremy looks like a totally different person now. My daughter enjoys coloring her hair as well.
You guys should love that freezer. I have been using that same unit for 5 years now, with no probs. Mine is turned down to be used as a fridge an runing on 12v dc.

Hears a tip may help I know freezers and refrigerators use a lot of power for a small deep freeze it's somewhere around 60 watts I'm not sure what your is but you can easily build and insulated box around your deep freeze have the box about 6 inches bigger then the deep freeze on all sides including the bottom and the top put insulting material in the bottom then put the Deep Freeze on top of it, the fill in around 4 sides and make I well insulated door for the top, Made sure to cut open any vent places like the compressor motor and on some there's one on the side, Making things more efficient saves a lot of energy :)
They used to have kerosene powered absorption refrigerators in cabins that had no utilities, I believe those can still be purchased new. The Amish use natural gas and or propane absorption refrigerators and they manufacture and sell those. Many RV's and hotels still use absorption refrigerators as they are silent (no compressor). Using an absorption refrigerator or freezer could be more reliable versus the potential for cloudy days, and offloads your batteries but does have the downside of requiring propane, natural gas and or kerosene. If you have a large number of farm animals, you can build a digester to generate biogas from the manure but I see biogas as more useful to store in gasometers to run a generator when cloudy days hamper your solar panels, that way you don't need to produce so much biogas hence do not need a lot of farm animals, and perhaps just process your own wastes and garden wastes.
I can remember my grandmother's freezer being on her back porch. It was about the size of a Volkswagen!
I grew up with one of those in a room I lived in as a kid lol and my grandparents had one but learned don’t get nosy when I opened and seen a pigs head once as a small kid
@@angleav5226 You know?! My G-parents were from backwoods WV and they ate things we never had to. Pigs feet, cow tongue and liver-n-onions! Mom used to send me to the yard to pick greens that grew in the grass around our farm (OH). Thought that was bizarre. But we ate those things when times were hard.

We settled on Haiir brand for our cooling needs, the Refrigerator set on medium is very cold and efficient the freezer (chest ) is VERY Cold although they are 110AC they are cheaper to buy as not inflated because they are "OFF-GRID" we have used them for 15 years now and had no issues, cost was under $150.USD. prior to that we tried propane, UN-reliable, expensive! We ran a domestic 120 litre freezer for 14 years off grid ac with an inverter, never turned off during the day. always 15’ c below, we made eutectic containers which fitted around the inside about 1 foot square and about an inch thick. with a mixture of salt and water which lowered the freeze point. We put a timer on power lead so it only ran in sunlight hours. I made sure the freezer had an outside condenser and I spaced it away from the cabinet about 4”

Great freezer! I hear there are three way refrigerators these days. I may look into that.We use propane as a back up, so that could help us. It is a good feeling to be taking care of the everyday living requirements by your own hand...

Is that one of those that uses a dc compressor with a special board? I know that is is easy to get thermocouple cooling, but that does not have as much temperature differential.
