    Player of the year should go to the person that impacts their team the most, the person to keep their teammates heads in the game even when their down. And to me that sounds like Thelle. Yes, Nikolov is good and well-deserved freshman of the year but though he played a pretty good game, he was seen visibly frustrated and yelling at his teammates (He's still young, I mean he just turned 18 like last month, so he has time to grow out of that) and I really do think how they communicate with each other on the court is what cost them the game (Besides Hawaii playing absolutely incredible). Nikolov was yelling at Olivier for whatever ever reason, then the next play Olivier gets blocked. Thelle is constantly seen encouraging his teammates through communication and his serves.

      @zephyrhusky7921 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed, especially at 1:00:10. I don't think he was good for him to express his frustration like that to a teammate. It really impacts the entire team when it comes to communication. I acknowledge Nikolov being an outstanding freshman and OH, but I don't think the NPOY should have that sort of attitude on the court. I agree, I think Thella should have gotten the honor for being a really good floor captain and also better all-around player from serving, digging, killing, and also setting, which really messed up Long Beach's blocking.

      I’m late to reply to this but as someone who feels the same, I did my research. Mens volleyball doesn’t have a freshman of the year. If it did, I’m sure Thelle would’ve gotten player and Nikolov would’ve gotten freshman.

    • @generatorx
      @generatorx หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thelle was indeed the difference, besides his leadership, he also knew how to work the players. Nikolov is an outstanding player, but LB turned to him too much. Hence, he and Spencer Olivier were the only two players that held the Beach together. No one else was given the opportunity to get into a rhythm. Predictability held the Beach to one block compared to Hawaii's 8.

    Although Long Beach had the best hitter on the court, volleyball is a team sport and as a team Hawaii was just better. Hawaii’s pass/receive was on point which allowed Jakob Thelle to run a quick offense just completely overwhelming Long Beach. The serving was also impressive, it seemed like Long Beach was out of system a lot. Can’t wait til next season it’s going to be interesting being that everyone is coming back and teams will be a lot better. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a repeat with both teams in the finals again.

Credit to their best digging skills and turn it into a point really make a difference. That's team work. Jakob Thelle has plenty of spikers, be it outside, middle, opposite and backrow. Commentator : "And there's a big argument to be made Paul, that player of the year should have gone to Jakob Thelle. Best setter, he makes this team run, they have no singular weapon. He is the guy who's going to be determining the strategy addition throughout. As he goes that team goes."
    In the 2019 loss to Long Beach in the National Championship, UH lost the first set with Brett Sheward setting too predictably. They switched to Thelle and the team became more effective. Thelle has become the first team setter after that.
    The NCAA voters voted for Nikolav to become the FIRST Freshman to win player of the year when this is a TEAM sport.
    The FACTS : Thelle setting : UH beats BYU for National Championship and won 3- 0. Thelle setting : beats #1 Long Beach St. For the Big West Championship and won 3- 0, WITH Nikolav playing. Thelle setting : UH beats #1 seed Long Beach St. For the National Championship and won 3- 0 WITH Nikolav playing.
    Pretty obvious who the real player of the year really is!

      First of all, his name is mason Briggs, one of the best in the game. And you have to play in a couple of factors. For one, watch any volleyball game period, if a 50/50 ball doesn’t go ur way ofc ur gonna be upset and argue one way or another. He just want the point. On top of that, as long as he’s not going up to the ref and complaining directly, there’s no rule against being upset in the game. This isn’t high school volleyball where the refs are gonna card every player for small mishaps. They understand that Briggs just wants the point. If the refs gave out cards for arguing and complaing points (not directly at the refs themselves) there would be no point in playing the game

    This was cool to see Men's college volleyball. I've only ever played or watched women's volleyball, and I had no idea that men had a rule that allowed them to chase a ball on the opponent's side, as long as it went outside the antenna! I agree with the commentators that women's volleyball needs this integrated, too!
    But this was amazing to watch. Men have a frighteningly powerful jump serve, of which I would be terrified to be on the other end. lolol
    It makes me sad that the Southern states, where I'm from, don't hail volleyball as a male sport. It's predominantly a female practice in the South. Men should definitely get the chance to play down here, and it should be promoted for male sports across the college nation. It's a great sport for all, and I love seeing that it brings in a lot of international recruits! It makes for formidable teams with diverse players from around the world. It's so awesome!

It's definitely been changing; they aired a women's B1G regular season match on cable TV for the first time I can remember, Nebraska set the attendance record for a volleyball match and for most-attended women's sporting event worldwide, and the US now has the Pro Volleyball Federation (Rise Up!). Why are they saying Thelle should have gotten POY when he’s 11th at his position?

    • @bellathornbury2165
      @bellathornbury2165 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      He was 11th in assists per set. That doesn’t necessarily mean he was 11th in his position as it’s not always a reflection of the setter. For one, Thelle is very offensive so he gets more kills himself and therefore less assists than other setters. Additionally, his and his teammates are more efficient in other skills such as their serving and blocking so there are less points scored from kills. And, he doesn’t have a stand out like Nikola to feed consistently to get kills. That’s why his assists per set are lower. But it’s clear by how often he can get his hitters one on one opportunities and by how well rounded he is that he’s the best setter in the ncaa.

      Because Thelle setting has had UH beat BYU 3-0 in last year's National Championship, beat #1 Long Beach St. 3-0 the week before at the Big West Championship, and beat #1 ranked Long Beach St. 3-0 in this National Championship. Who did they name the player of the year? The freshman player who lost 6 straight sets to Thelle and UH. Overhyped freshman player who when shut down shuts down the whole team. This is a TEAM sport which shows exactly why Thelle should be the MVP and POY!

    • @jaimesantos1170
      @jaimesantos1170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think you are basing it on assist per set. But what if the team is a good blocking team? A good serving team? There will be little opportunities for a setter of a good blocking or serving team to set the ball because the ball is killed in the block or serve already. Unfortunately in the setter position they don't mention the excellent sets over total sets attempted.

    Disagree with Kevin and Paul, as well as the officials' ruling of that crucial call in Set 3. That's a penetration/interference by the Hawaii player of the LB's setter who has a right to make a setting attempt on the ball.

      I mean, BYU had more foreign starters than Hawaii last season and BYU lost to Hawaii in the 2021 championship. It’s not so much on where they come from, it’s what each player can bring to the table. If a foreigner wants to come to America to play volleyball, we shouldn’t restrict them from not being able to play on the court.

      What difference does it make. Those players are free to choose to attend and play for any school.
      Any school can choose to pursue and try to recruit those same players as well.
      Why don't you bring up a bigger issue, how much money each school has to fund and promote their sports teams. Why not make it a pool of money and all schools have the same amount or a hard cap to how much money they can spend to make things more even for all sports.
