    When you watch a comedian, laughter of the audience doesn’t always govern wether a comedian is good or not. Remember that in the early days Sean would have to play to many crowds to get established. Many of the crowds for early comedians tend not to be in to their comedy until they’re established and have a following, that’s why this set WOULD be widely and fondly received by those that admire his style of comedy today.

    • @MrBaronCabron
      @MrBaronCabron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I love Sean but this is average at best, and it only makes sense since he was on the come up. It's like expecting a footballer at 16 to be in his prime.

    • @ritchski1
      @ritchski1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn’t think the crowd was that bad, it’s not like they didn’t laugh at all, some bits they were cracking up. The first bit was a bit cold but the mad cow impression got them going. It was interesting seeing him deal with it

    • @COLLECTORSCORNER1979ANT
      @COLLECTORSCORNER1979ANT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly you can have a whole crowd in who have no sense of humour atall, or just those in who like sick insulting comedy only. Like that boyle comedian but very serious with it. Not a fan. But every comedian has fans somewhere.lol.
      No matter what there material or style is. I was at a comedy gig in a pub and most of the pub crowd wasn't laughing at anything.well only me.lol. I really felt for the comedians.

      Very true if a crowd don't know you or has never seen you before. straight away they are all going to be in impress me mode. Hehe, lol.

    People don't get it, at this point Sean was mostly surrounded by his peers. Grassroots comedy clubs are a tough ordeal, you don't get a huge crowd and not a lot of random people; often crowds are built up of other comedian's friends and families as well as your own. Combine that with being young and inexperienced it creates a tough atmosphere. Completely different to when you've had 30 years to hone your craft and have overcome all the personal challenges you encounter as you grow older.

My respect for the ones who keep going until their whole act becomes unified is high. It takes time to become really good, but the journey there must be a nightmare. And RIP sean. You can see from this performance, although it wasnt that funny, how his mind worked. It wouldnt be long before he refined his act and would have me in absolute hysterics in the late 90's at the Ealing Comedy festival. RIP to such a unique comic brain. Will be sadly missed long after his death.

      Yep, I don't understand all the other arse licking comments here saying how funny he was back then. No he wasn't. Like all comedians, he was damn average while learning the art. But yes, you can see the parallels of how his mind worked and all the wild and wonderful things going on in it. Years later, he had perfected the art of comedy.

    I know we're all up his arse now, for obvious reasons, but it seems like he's every comedians favourite comedian and everyone's favourite panel show comedian. With retrospect it's maybe a good thing he never made it to superstardom as that seems to change people, I know we'll all say he wouldn't have changed but we never know. I never really 'got' any of the surreal comedians; Harry Hill just wasn't funny ooh ooh, Vic and bob were amusing to me but just got predictable (which is weird for a random act)[also not to discount them both as comedians and humans, they're both amazing at both from what I see] but Sean Lock was so random and not being weird and OTT about it. Thanks for sharing this video, was nice to see

    Such a hard hard thing to even start doing. I think that's why it transpires that any survivors, also happen to be the most emotionally sensitive & highly intelligent, empathetic, kind and courageous, authentic people on the planet. I've only ever paid to see an affirmed 'made it comedian', comedy clubs aren't big in little nz. Apart from I think Auckland?, and that's NOTHING on the scale of the UK, and the occasional touring gig. But you watch this and you are reminded of all sorts about audiences and people at large. Snobbery, scathing non appreciation for what that person up on stage is going through, the sheer almost insane bravery of it!!! There is no glory. It's hard slog with no promises and you are completely on your own. I take my hat off. Some of the (rare) most honest earners around. He showed early promise for sure! I love the ways their minds work, it's certainly often different and very quick witted and bright as f**k.
